So I have started taking this to aid sleep. I have been taking the recommended dosage of two tablets after food. So sleep has improved but I wake up with a jaw ache on the left side. Does anyone know what this could be and should I stop taking it?

It's interesting that Magnesium is recommended for jaw pain caused by clenching one's jaw or teeth at night! It's good for relaxing muscles. Sounds like you may be clenching your jaw, and that causes the pain.

I'd do some experimenting, if it was me. Try not taking any pills for a couple of nights, see if the pain goes away. Then try just one pill and see what happens. Most of us are deficient in Magnesium so you probably do need it, but anything new you introduce can cause reactions until your body adjusts.

pilates · 27/01/2024 09:17

Yes strange Crunchy. I have never been aware that I clench my jaw at night. But yes I will follow your advice and stop for a couple of nights and reintroduce just 1 tablet. Annoying as have had some really good nights sleep which makes you feel so much better 😔

Yes, I take Magnesium glycinate and wouldn't be without it, in fact if I forget for a couple of days I get a recurrence of painful leg cramps. Good luck with figuring it out!

Thank you 😀

Where do you get this supplement from? When ever I see magnesium it's aways citrate?

pilates · 27/01/2024 13:42

I bought it online from a reputable chemist. It’s a New Leaf product.

I buy the New Leaf magnesium off amazon
It's magic.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/01/2024 20:51

Amazon does many different types of Magnesium. Some folks have problems with Magnesium citrate as it can loosen the bowels. I take either Magnesium glycinate or malate, both work for me.

Yes I should have said, I buy New Leaf magnesium glycinate off amazon.

For some reason Holland and barret don't sell proper strength anything.

Just my regular reminder that magnesium is best absorbed through the skin. The traditional method is Epsom salts in an evening bath. This way, your body absorbs as much magnesium as it needs, and then stops absorbing.

Epsom salts are about £3 a kilo from any chemist and pound shops, etc.

Well I didn’t take tablets last night. Didn’t wake up with a jaw ache but had a bad night’s sleep 😔 I only have a shower is there a cream you can use? I may try just one tablet tonight.

There are nice creams or spray oil which is my favourite. Can be used daily like a deodorant but then sprayed on sore backs or legs as needed.

Sorry to hear that! Yes do try one tablet tonight and see how it goes.

I know this sounds sad but the thought of having a good nights sleep feels me with excitement 😀

Not sad at all!! I would dearly love a good night's sleep, don't think I've had one for at least 15 plus years. I used to be such a good sleeper but back problems then hypothyroidism destroyed that. So yeah, I feel you, a good night's sleep is just so beneficial.

pilates · 28/01/2024 18:00

Sorry to hear that Crunchy. So you take it more for pain relief rather than a sleep aid?

Well fortunately I discovered taking Boron sorted out the pain, so I no longer need painkillers. Buy they hypothyroidism is a bit more tricky LOL. I do take Magnesium primarily to prevent leg cramps, so there's that sort of unwanted pain!

It's weird isn't it! Are you taking capsules, if so open one and just take half the amount, swirl it round in some juice and take it that way. If you have solid pills, cut in half. Try that, keep reducing the dose.

pilates · 31/01/2024 20:54

I’ve taken some different jelly type gummies. I’ll update you in the morning Crunchy.

How did you get on @pilates ?

pilates · 01/02/2024 18:13

Well silly me they had magnesium in them too and so I had a bit of a jaw ache but not as bad as previously. I had a fabulous night sleep though so may just put up with it as it does wear off by late morning. Thanks for asking.😀

Aha so it is the magnesium causing it, and it is dose-dependent! Fascinating. You may get used to the dose, hopefully. Then try another small increase.

pilates · 01/02/2024 20:55

Yes I think it’s trial and error crunchy.

OP posts:
Aworldofmyown · 02/02/2024 10:25

Could it be that you've been unknowingly clenching your jaw for so long that when you take it the jaw ache is actually from you not clenching. Does that make sense? Like a muscle that's confused you are no longer using it?
Personally I would push through for a few weeks and see if it stops.
I buy my magnesium glycinate from Nutriadvanced.
