Night sweats -Please give me your survival tips!

The night sweats are driving me crazy. Some nights aren’t too dramatic, other nights I have had to get up, get changed (I wear an oversized cotton tshirt and cotton knickers to bed) sometimes twice and change the sheets. It’s awful, it’s disturbing my sleep but what I’m hating at the moment is that I’m going to bed cold (thin summer duvet), having awful night sweats, then when I cool my skin I’m cold again and often cold in the morning. It’s either cold or roasting away like a pig on a spitfire.

Did anyone find anything to cope with night sweats?! I’ve heard taking an antihistamine can help, anyone know if this is true?

Thanks

Stopping alcohol has stopped mine. Maybe not what you want to hear.

I don’t drink! Or smoke.

Eat less refined sugar

Get hrt

HRT

muddyford · 26/11/2023 08:21

I took sage capsules which helped a bit. Utter gamechanger was reading that a low dose of citalopram, an antidepressant, is brilliant. I didn't want to take HRT and my lovely GP was happy to.prescribe 'off-piste ' as it were. So half a tablet of the lowest dose an hour before bedtime and that sorted it for me. Apparently, it doesn't work if you are taking them for depression.

Sleeping on a towel and a towel on the pillow. Keep a pile of cotton nighties or t shirts by the bed.

PackedlunchofRishiSunak · 26/11/2023 08:23

I would recommend;

getting a menopause blanket - keeps you cool.
menopause nightie - become clothing do some. Not cheap. And size up. They’re slightly snug otherwise. Wicks the sweat and stops you waking up soaking.

sage supplements - mine are menoforce I think.

all the best. X

HRT

Might you consider that?

Loverofoxbowlakes · 26/11/2023 08:29

I've bought very close-fitting cotton with stretch tops to wear for bed - wicks the moisture away and I don't wake up feeling the sweat trickling down my skin. Grim.

shockeditellyou · 26/11/2023 08:33

Wool duvet made a big difference here- far less sweating than the same tog feather/down duvet.

HRT

Might you consider that?

I haven’t been offered it yet

I was already using a wool duvet and taking a daily antihistamine. Neither were any help at all.

HRT is fab.

frazzled101 · 26/11/2023 09:13

I could have written your exact post. I hate going to bed cold, I've always liked my heat.

I also tend to wake up in damp pyjamas and freezing.

May I ask what age you are? I've only just turned 40 so maybe I'm naive but I feel too young for this!

Cheeesus · 26/11/2023 09:17

Mine weren’t as bad as yours but I have stopped them by:

these supplements https://amzn.to/3sHKSyR

eating more nuts, seeds and vegetables and fewer crappy carbs. Eg I swap noodles/pasta/potatoes for pulses. I get a very sensible seeded bread (Alinsons scandalous seeded) and hardly any other processed food.

OSU · 26/11/2023 09:24

Ref your point that you have not been offered HRT yet, have you spoken to the doc about your night sweats? How old are you? If under 45 they should investigate non peri reasons for night sweats first and then look to HRT. If 45 or over it's the other way around and HRT should be first line. I had night sweats and HRT was the game changer.

JinglingSpringbells · 26/11/2023 09:29

When you say you've 'not been offered HRT' what does that mean?

Have you spoken to your GP about your menopausal symptoms?

It's more often a case of having to ask for it, to relieve your symptoms.

Nothing else works as well (for most women) so rather than faff around with blankets, sage, etc, you could be using HRT.

If you're concerned about the small risks, have a look at the info online (most risks don't start until after 5 years on HRT, and for women under 50 who use it, the risks don't apply anyway.)

TheClitterati · 26/11/2023 09:41

HRT sorted my hot nights and interrupted sleep out within days OP.
Get in touch with your GP.

SoftPillowAllNight · 26/11/2023 10:57

HRT - nightsweats were my only peri symptom around 43 onwards. By 44 I was on HRT. Problem solved.

AnnaMagnani · 26/11/2023 10:59

If you haven't been offered HRT - have you asked for it? You won't get it if you don't ask.

Aquamarine1029 · 26/11/2023 11:00

Call your GP and tell them you need HRT.

Maddy70 · 26/11/2023 11:01

Hrt and a cool mat under the sheet (it was actually bought for my dog in the summer and its been a life saver )

Greatfull · 26/11/2023 13:29

HRT I went to the GP with a list of all my menopause symptoms and said it was what I wanted

zorrodrt · 26/11/2023 15:09

HRT sorted my night sweats within a few days honestly it’s been a game changer

LessonsInPhysics · 26/11/2023 15:12

HRT. Night sweats instantly gone.

BCBird · 26/11/2023 15:14

Wool duvet has made no difference to me. I find that if I have carbs or refined sugar then the sweats are worse.
