53 and still having regular periods

I’ve just turned 53 and had a couple of years of slightly irregular timings. - 6 weeks then 2 weeks, that sort of thing. But in general periods are still a regular occurrence. Also having some minor symptoms, sleeplessness, night sweats, hot quite a lot of the time, headaches.

I’m just getting fed up of it really, at least another year before official menopause and then god knows how many of symptoms / lack of oestrogen. Is anyone else in the same boat so we can moan together?

Or does anyone have any experience of later menopause, maybe it will be over quicker when it does happen, here’s hoping!

53 is not that old. I was almost 53.
It's good for your bones, so look at it that way!
If the side effects are a problem, would you consider HRT?

Blushingm · 02/10/2023 17:49

A mirena coil? Great at regulation and great fir menopausal symptoms

crimsonlake · 02/10/2023 17:53

I was 58 when mine stopped, think it helped to make me youthful as I seem to have aged a lot since they ended.

braveandcrazy · 02/10/2023 19:56

Thanks for your replies, sounds good about bones, I didn’t realise that!
I can manage the symptoms so far, would just like an end to the periods, maybe I’ll change my mind when the menopause proper kicks in.
58 sounds horrendous! I’ll take onboard that it might keep me youthful to keep me going.

I'm in the same boat! I'm also 53. Peri seems to have been going on for years with me, one or two symptoms at a time. My last few cycles have been erratic -- 7 weeks, 2 weeks, 3 weeks. But the main issue now is the almost constant cramping. Could really do without that! No hot flushes at all, hooray for that.

Hanitiser · 03/10/2023 12:51

Is there any truth to the later you've started your period the later your menopause will be?

SirChenjins · 03/10/2023 12:57

I’m 54.5 and had my last period 6 months ago so I’m hoping to goodness that’s the end of them as the bleeding was becoming horrendous and the peri symptoms had gone on for years (I can’t take HRT). You have my sympathies!

SapatSea · 03/10/2023 13:13

I was 58 when I had my last period about a year and half ago. I felt like I had been in peri from my mid 40's with chronic migraine, anxiety, dizziness, brain fog etc. but it also coincided with the worst, most stressful decade of my life in other ways. I got my hopes up when my period stopped for 5 months when I was 56 but no such luck, back it came but more erratic. Horrendous bleeding. My periods started in my 2nd year of secondary school, so I was 12/13.

braveandcrazy · 04/10/2023 18:12

I started late (nearly 15) so thought I might carry on later, but really not looking forward to them hanging around until 58 or so. If I will try to consider the benefits, eg keeping youthful and bone health :)

Me too at 53. Occasionally I get one that's a week or two late but the folllowing one will be early, so still 2 in 2 months iyswim. No other symptoms at all. Sometimes I think maybe a bit of brain fog, but suspect really that's lack of interest 😆

As PP, I think I look quite good for my age and strongly suspect this is why, so I'm kind of dreading things changing.

Softnatural · 04/10/2023 18:20

I started at 13 and still going strong at 53

Herecomesdehotstepper · 04/10/2023 18:31

Started at 13, finished at 58.

In Peru for the best part of twenty years.

bellac11 · 04/10/2023 18:41

I started at 11 and am now 51, for the past 4 years I would say Ive been properly in peri and after decades of virtually no periods due to PCOS (mixed messages about that as well), my periods have been like clockwork, bit too heavy, extreme exhaustion. Dizziness etc.

However bloods showed no lowered hormones (although I know they fluctuate) so for now I have decided not to start HRT, that might change in 6 months who knows.

So Im wondering when I will see a drop off of them too. I havent got any other peri symptoms, skin a bit dryer, itchy etc but I will soon start the estrogen pessaries for preventing vaginal atrophy as I think Ive had problems controlling wee a bit.

Teentrauma · 15/10/2023 09:24

I'm 56 and still waiting. I was getting hopeful as for a few months my periods seemed to be getting further apart (at least 5 weeks) and were very light after a couple of years of being mostly less than 3 weeks apart. Now I seem to be back to mostly short cycles (latest one was 17 days!). I started at 11. Most of my peers stopped long ago, although my sister is still going strong at 54. Really hope I don't have to wait until 58......

Saisong · 15/10/2023 09:37

Almost 53 and still going strong, though the intervals are slightly more irregular so I can't easily predict when my next cycle will be. My premenstrual symptoms also seem reduced so it is often a surprise which I don't like. However I'm extremely grateful for the fact that otherwise I seem to have no other peri symptoms at all, because all my friends seem to be having the worst time of it.

I started at 11 and as a teen suffered immeasurably with cramps and flooding - which lasted until had my pregnancies

Hbh17 · 15/10/2023 09:40

I had hardly any periods throughout my 30s and 40s (and I know why, it wasn't a problem). Then I started having regular periods again at 48, right through until I was 56. Then they stopped. No issues, no problems. I did get a bit bored with it all, so was very happy when they stopped, but I haven't needed to see a GP for over 20 years, so I consider myself fortunate. Menopause is a good thing for me.

HarrysStyle · 15/10/2023 09:44

I want to know this too. I'm 54 and many of my friends started their menopause up to 10 years ago, but I still have regular monthly periods.

I haven't noticed any symptoms of anything suggesting it, either.

CampervanKween · 15/10/2023 09:46

I'm the same. 54 and periods still completely regular. Have just got the estrogen cream for vaginal atrophy but otherwise no symptoms really of menopause. I guess it will happen when it happens but I too am heartily sick of periods.

Twinklewonderkins · 15/10/2023 10:22

I’m 53 and been in peri forever, on HRT coming up 3 years and still have one unpredictable period a month.
wish my body would chose it’s lane.

Berthatydfil · 15/10/2023 10:26

I was nearly 57 when mine stopped

LegArmpits · 15/10/2023 10:28

Peru 😂

Is there any truth to the later you've started your period the later your menopause will be?

I started early and am just about to turn 50. No sign of menopause yet. It's a bit annoying but I'm just reminding myself of the health risks once they do stop, so it's probably better for me.

braveandcrazy · 15/10/2023 10:39

I do feel better seeing your responses messages, thank you. Am trying to look on the bright side of health and prolonged youthfulness :)

Started at 11 finished at 54.

Teentrauma · 15/10/2023 10:46

I would add that I do seem younger than most of my fellow 56 year old- one of my friends can barely walk due to arthritis, most people seem genuinely surprised when I tell them my age, or maybe I'm just childish 🤣
