53 and still having regular periods

I’ve just turned 53 and had a couple of years of slightly irregular timings. - 6 weeks then 2 weeks, that sort of thing. But in general periods are still a regular occurrence. Also having some minor symptoms, sleeplessness, night sweats, hot quite a lot of the time, headaches.

I’m just getting fed up of it really, at least another year before official menopause and then god knows how many of symptoms / lack of oestrogen. Is anyone else in the same boat so we can moan together?

Or does anyone have any experience of later menopause, maybe it will be over quicker when it does happen, here’s hoping!

Peru 😂

Just seen this LOL.

Needless to say, I was not in Peru, lovely, though it may be - I was in peri

Well you lot have made me feel better. I'm 55 next week and still getting periods. This year I had one in January, one in February, then nothing. Hooray! I thought, that's most likely it.
Last week,my boobs hurt,I was spotty,and bingo,another period.
I started at 11,so I think that I've had my fair share by now, although I'm happy about this health benefits and despite working outdoors,I don't look anything like my age.
Two years ago my GP told me that still having periods at 52 put me at the border of 'normal'. Shed probably keel over if she read this thread.

I really thought @Herecomesdehotstepper was in Peru!!! 😂

I had read that the earlier you start, the later you finish, although that doesn't seem very logical.
I started at 11, still going at 54, was on HRT for 2 yrs but have had to come off it whilst having tests. My Mum was done with it all at 45 and she started at 13.

I have a theory (which MN will probably disprove in a minute 😆), that your reading vision doesn't go until your periods finish, so that's a plus.

Sorry. That's my cue to chip in.

Eyesight deteriorating over the last seven years, rapid deterioration in last 18 months, first hot flushes in the last 9 (I'm 50).

CampervanKween · 21/10/2023 21:50

I'm still having regular periods at 54, but eyesight has gone over the last 6 months as has dh's (he's the same age as me but has never had a period) 😉

I have reading glasses and have had for several years. So that disproves it, as you predicted.

I have heard that the more children you have, the later you finish too. I'm never going to finish. ha

MorvernBlack · 21/10/2023 23:33

Lol, knew it would be disproven. Everyone I know needs reading glasses, DH who is younger has been wearing them for years. The only difference in my vision is that I can no longer read close up whilst wearing my distance glasses, but I rarely wear them anyway.

I can disprove the theory that the more kids, the later you finish. I have a quite a few kids, but only one is biologically mine and I'm still going at 54.

Rockschooldropout · 21/10/2023 23:41

I didn’t start my periods until I was nearly 14 .. periods still regular at 52 although peri symptoms drive me to hrt this summer .. the jury is still out as to whether it’s doing anything at the moment

bellac11 · 22/10/2023 11:49

I didnt know this thing about eye sight, what is that about?

My eye sight has deteriorated rapidly in recent years, cant see that well without very bright light, needing 'reading' glasses but as I wear glasses for short sight I offically need varifocals but cant get on with them. Solution would be to wear contacts and then readers on top when needed but Im finding that my sight is not as good with contacts as it used to be (strong astigmatism) and I have regular checks so the prescription is right yet Im often saying 'I cant see that'.

Im early 50s, never missed a period yet, but feel there are peri symptoms. Also my eyes are often too dry for all day contacts.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 22/10/2023 12:22

It's correlation, not causation - eyesight changes start around the same age (in both sexes).

ETA: DP complained of very dry eyes, light sensitivity and not being able to see with the correct prescription contacts. He had eyelash mites - some sort of drops and making a point of keeping his eyes very clean by cleansing twice daily made the majority of his issues go away.

LeonBlack · 22/10/2023 12:26

In January (at 51), I had a mirena coil fitted. Until then my periods were still every 28 days without fail. The only difference was they had become catastrophically heavy. I was starting to think I was going to still be having periods at 60!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 22/10/2023 12:36

Same here, 52. I have the same symptoms as you, minus the hot flushes / night sweats so far. But plus some mild but annoying digestive issues which appear to be at least partly hormonal-related. Periods have got very heavy over the last few years too.

Floralnomad · 22/10/2023 12:37

I didn’t start having irregular periods until I was about 55 , it’s not unusual .

ClarkGablesMoustache · 22/10/2023 12:40

My mum's didn't stop until she was 60. Mine have been erratic for 4 years but more frequent than ever and I'm 54.

EwwSprouts · 22/10/2023 12:40

Finished periods at 55. Very few menopause symptoms apart from flooding in the last 18 months of periods. Not taken HRT or anything else. First pair of glasses at 56.

KnittedCardi · 22/10/2023 13:29

57 still going strong. Went on HRT about 18 months ago mainly for night sweats and anxiety. Bizarrely the HRT has completely messed up my periods, used to be regular every 30 days, now all over the place. Still getting monthly rhythms though, so assume still ovulating? Who knows.

KnittedCardi · 22/10/2023 13:30

Oh, and have terrible eyesight, but always have been very short sighted....actually stabilized somewhat recently.

theduchessofspork · 22/10/2023 13:31

I think that’s quite normal.

53 is about average I think, so lots of people will be later.

You can look at coil or HRT
