Where can mirena move to?

Runaround50 · 13/05/2023 12:02

Anyone know where a coil could shift to if it's going to shift?

Had mine in a year now and got stabbing pain in my side. No bleeding.

Got GP appointment in a week so will request a scan i think.

Thanks.

Anyone ?

One of my three moved painlessly up into my uterus and had to be removed with a camera. I also expelled one during a very heavy period. I have heard of them puncturing the uterus and moving into the abdominal cavity although this is pretty rare. They are quite flexible plastic though, and the arms aren't sharp. I can't easily see how this would happen.

DustyLee123 · 15/05/2023 07:52

Can you feel the strings ?

Lostiud · 15/05/2023 12:38

I am in the same position, pain (low around the c section scar for me), and post menopausal bleeding for me though on and off since current Mirena inserted. GP can't find the strings so I'm getting booked in for a scan to check for ovarian cysts / womb lining thickness and also hopefully locate the mirena!

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 17:26

@DustyLee123 I've never been able to feel the strings. It was last checked in September last year and in situ. There was a small fibroid detected though.

@ChippyPrincess really hope mine hasn't disappeared somewhere random?

@Lostiud yes I'm going to ask the Gp next week to refer me in for a scan. I also want to know where this coil is and what my womb is doing.

God what a worry!

@Runaround50, when I went to the nurse to check my Mirena having had it put in after hysteroscopy 3 weeks previously, she couldn’t find the strings.
She told me to ask the GP to refer me for a scan, but if I experienced and pain or heavy bleeding, to go straight to A&E.

So get yourself to A&E!

I’m dreading finding out mine has moved - spotting on and off, but no pain atm.

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 19:21

@bigTillyMint yes I'm going to have to go to a&e I think.

No bleeding or spotting. Pain isn't exactly in the abdominal area, more at the side of my back. Very sharp and intense when lying down.

Spotting after Insertion i think is usual. Fingers crossed for both of us!

This has worried me slightly. GP asked me to consider having a Mirena to treat menopause symptoms. But after reading about them going missing and needing scans to find them, and even puncturing the womb, I’m considering saying no.

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 19:39

@Bananah I think these happenings are quite rare ( well I'm hoping!)

I'm trying to rule out causes to my pain, that is all.

Please don't let this put you off! Having a mirena was life changing for me, absolutely brilliant and my only regret is not going for it years earlier. And i say that even though mine has gone missing and I need to go to the "missing strings clinic" next week!

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 19:54

@Pamspeople this is what I don't get. How do they go missing and where do they end up? Is the plastic sharp? Can it hurt do you think? God I wish I knew mine was in situ!

OP posts:
Pamspeople · 15/05/2023 20:01

I don't think there's really many places they can go. I suspect (based on just a hunch!) that maybe mine has got embedded in thickened womb lining or something. The strings have never been easy to feel.

It's made such a huge difference to my quality of life over it's lifetime, no terms of ending my dreadful period pain and flooding, I don't begrudge it's waywardness 😊

I hope your pain eases soon

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 20:04

Yes I've kind of had visions of it migrating all over the place, causing mayhem and pain!

Well, I've had this pain weeks and weeks now. So GP appt next week to request a scan and a&e if the pain
becomes unbearable.

Still no bleeding though.

Pamspeople · 15/05/2023 20:09

Poor you, the pain sounds rubbish. I hope they can solve it for you and that your mirean is safe and sound where it should be

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 20:15

Me too.
Hope yours hasn't gone too awol either. I agree, it's been ace at controlling post menopause bleeding. But at the same time, given me something else to worry over!
😊

bigTillyMint · 15/05/2023 20:32

@Runaround50, have you an A&E nearby? If you have ongoing pain, surely better to just go down there?

Runaround50 · 15/05/2023 20:36

Yes @bigTillyMint a&e 5 miles away. I'm going tomorrow. Just too tired too drive there now and sit and wait for hours.

weegiemum · 15/05/2023 20:39

Mine moved down into my cervix, probably during a smear test.

Dd2 is now 19!

MigGirl · 15/05/2023 20:57

Not to panic you to much, but can you get an urgent GP appointment or out of hours GP. The last coil I had, had to be surgical removed as it had preverated my womb and ended up in my abdominal cavity. I'd had a lot of pain after the fitting but I went back to have the strings shortened, the nurse cut the strings to short and they disappeared. Didn't think to much off it as the first coil I had fitted was painful to start with.

The only reason I found out where is was, was because I went for a follow up scan on cyst. When I said I had a coil they couldn't see it. Had a look around and found my coil where it shouldn't have been. The made me see the gynaecologist there and then, and only allowed me home as I wasn't currently in pain. But that is the shorts NHS wait I've ever had, just a couple of weeks for the operation. At lest they sorted my cyst at the same time. I'm lucky I had that scan.

bigTillyMint · 15/05/2023 21:05

D@Runaround50, I think tomorrow is sensible, they may need to send you along to the scanning clinic and it won’t be open overnight I guess.

Good luck

bigTillyMint · 15/05/2023 21:07

@MigGirl, that sounds awful, you poor thing.

I am hoping that mine is in place, but there are no strings showing. How do they even get it out if there are no strings hanging out?

NameChangeSorryNotSorry · 15/05/2023 21:08

Honestly OP if it’s not newly fitted which it sounds like it isn’t it won’t be anywhere. They can move, slightly, within the womb but they are fundal seeking so generally stay put. It won’t perforate after a period of time- that is a small risk at fitting (1-2:1000) but won’t happen months later. It’s more likely the strings are tucked up inside after this time which is common. I wouldn’t go to A&E I’d ask the GP for a referral for an USS to confirm position. I’m a nurse and fit coils a LOT!

NameChangeSorryNotSorry · 15/05/2023 21:10

Mirenas are so common and v safe! Risk of perforation is less than 2 in 1000. Risk of expulsion (falling out) 1 in 20 but skewed heavily by people who fit them soon after childbirth so more likely to happen then.
They are a really good method! Don’t be put off.

Ladybug14 · 15/05/2023 21:11

When my Coil went awol they did scans and also an x Ray of my chest as it could have migrated there!? Wtf! 🤪

DustyLee123 · 15/05/2023 21:20

Mine has moved, strings have gone up inside, and the scanner says it’s not in the right position to be used for contraception. So I’d suggest you ladies who use it for contraception get it checked.
