Burning skin on face symptom of menopause?

Chochka · 09/03/2023 11:18

Has anyone else had a burning sensation in their face during menopause? I've had this sensation for the last 18 hours with no visible signs of rash or redness or anything. I've tried taking antihistamine and steroid cream but they haven't worked. It is slowly starting to spread. Could it be a symptom of menopause?

Hi when you say burning feeling, does it come and go, is it just one side? Is it around your mouth, jaw, cheek area?

Felicity42 · 09/03/2023 15:50

I've had bouts of extreme tenderness on one side of face with no marks visible. It's weird. Scalp too sometimes. Mine stays about 2 days then goes.
Wouldn't call it burning though. More hyper sensitive.

I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia, 7 years ago, whilst peri, i swear its down to hormone fluctuation. Im on high dose carbamazapine (tegretol) for this as it gets that bad its crippling. Just one side of face, but lingers for weeks at a time tge daily episodes. I wonder if you're all experiencing the same? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I sincerely hope not 😢

Catsfriend · 09/03/2023 22:20

Only in the last two weeks and only on my skin. Applied more face cream than usual to hydrate it.

along with sore boobs and spotting.
I almost feel as if my bottle of Oestrogel is faulty.

HelloVeritas · 09/03/2023 22:43

I've had exact same thing these last few days. Applied my normal night cream and face felt as if it was burning. Never happened before and never had sensitive skin.

How odd

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 07:45

@cats
There is another chat here about change of Oestrogel /oestrodose bottles. And womens symptoms returning. Worth you looking

DustyLee123 · 10/03/2023 07:47

I get a burning face if I drink alcohol.
Developing new allergies is a symptom of menopause.

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 07:52

Sorry that was for @Catsfriend dont know what happened there 🙈

vjg13 · 10/03/2023 09:05

@DustyLee123 Me too! It's horrible, even 1 glass of wine does it.

Chochka · 10/03/2023 09:41

It's like an intense itching and burning around my nose and cheeks area. It's faded a bit toady and is now just a bit irritating in the background rather than unbearably overbearing

My allergies have got a lot worse in the last few months. Particularly my asthma

What is trigeminal neuralgia? It sounds really nasty

Could be the start of rosacea?
Mine started at menopause.
I can look perfectly normal one minute then like I’m horrifically sunburnt the next, it starts with burning/tingling then vivid redness down either side of my nose and my whole chin.
I use a Dr Jart cicapair facial spray containing tiger grass whenever I feel a tingle and a redness cream if I haven’t caught it in time.

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 11:28

@Chochka it is a nerve branch that stems from the head and branches out down the eye, nose, upper lip, cheek, jawline & scalp. I get a burning sensation then like an electric shock spasm that lasts around a minute or so, its crippling, then it just returns throughout the day for days/ weeks on end. Its so debilitating. Anything can trigger it. Eating, talking, brushing my teeth, wind in your face, smiling just any facial movement. Its horrendous. And im on copious amount of anticonvulsants for the pain, they are awful. Im having acupuncture as a last resort to see if it has any affect 🤞🏼

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 11:32

@Chochka i think @BorgQueen could have nailed it, yours sounds so much like Rosacea, quite a few of my friends started having this whilst menopausal. So many things us women have to deal with 🙄

HunningUpthatHill · 10/03/2023 11:39

Trigeminal (and other) neuralgias can also be a post viral thing, have you had Covid or some other infection recently?
That’s interesting about the hormonal link, since men get trigeminal neuralgia too?

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 11:48

@HunningUpthatHill Ive had it 7years. Started when i was peri menopausal.
Very rare in men, much more common with women 45plus. I have annual reviews with my neurologist & even she linked it to fluctuating hormones, & since starting hrt the episodes are far more frequent, when i was hoping the hrt would balance me out. I hadnt had a virus or any blows to the head that could have damaged the nerve, i also had 4 mri's as she thought at one point i had Ms. Thankfully that wasnt the case. So im holding on to the hope that once im through the other side & over all these meno symptoms it will just go 🙏🏼

Posyapocalypse · 10/03/2023 11:53

Ive has similar for about 5 years. For no reason my face goes very flushed for hours. Sometimes a whole day. It’s not itchy or tight, just hot and red. I’m on HRT and post meno at 62

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 12:19

@Posyapocalypse thankfully yourd also sounds like Rosacea

Tootsey11 · 10/03/2023 13:31

My advice to you all as a rosacea sufferer is avoid alcohol, sudden temperature changes and be careful what you eat, so no spicy food at all. Stress also makes it worse.

Catsfriend · 10/03/2023 15:59

That should have read chin, not skin.
For some reason the skin on my chin flared up, although no irritation was actually visible.

I also had very sore boobs and spotting, which has gotten progressively worse, although my ob/gyn advised me to stop HRT for a week.

Not sure what to do at this point. Boobs and chin feel better after 5 days without HRT.

Catsfriend · 10/03/2023 16:00

@SamR36 Thanks, will look into it!

HunningUpthatHill · 10/03/2023 17:41

Sam it’s a really tough condition, sorry to hear it. I have TN too but only for about the past six months, it swings between the electric shocks, stinging and feeling bruised or itchy at best (but that’s not often). Funnily enough in the time period when the TN began I think my HRT oestrogen was getting too low-I had got most of the peri symptoms back again- aching joints, anxiety, dry foof, eyes, palpitations, and feeling exhausted. I only recently got it together to whack on some extra patches and am waiting to see what this does. That increase hasn’t seemed to make my TN worse so far, it feels same as it was really. I don’t think I could manage without HRT even if that makes the TB worse, so am really keen to try something else to shift it. Is acupuncture working for you?

SamR36 · 10/03/2023 21:50

@HunningUpthatHill sounds like yours was triggered through menopause too? I actually researched soo much that i found that meno can bring it on & mentioned it to my consultant who then clarified it as the only possible cause for me at that time.
Im sorry to hear you suffer too. Are you on medication for it?
Its excruciating pain, i have to be so careful not to touch my face as im doubled up, so the thought of having acupuncture in my face was terrifying, but i dealt with it. Ive had 2 sessions so far so im unsure at this point but i shall keep you posted. If it eased enough just to come off these meds i'd be more than happy 😏

HunningUpthatHill · 10/03/2023 22:09

Sam I didn’t have periods anyway (Mirena) so not sure if I am meno or not but definitely peri. I’m mid 40s. My neuro consultant said TN cause is often unexplained, MRI didn’t show a vascular cause and there wasn’t MS evident which was a relief .
I’m on Neurontin. I was hoping it might be post herpetic and so this pain will stop at some point but now I’m thinking maybe if I can get my HRT right it might go? That would be great.
Now I’m wondering if the menopause clinic at my local hospital could be worth a try.
I am really worried how to manage this long term, do you find you can work (able to talk for several hours and be not to sleepy to concentrate) on the meds you’re on, if you don’t mind me asking?
