Ovestin cream

Hi. I’ve just been prescribed Ovestin cream by my gp for vaginal burning and soreness and urinary frequency which feels like a UTI. ((I did actually have a urine infection last month but that has cleared with antibiotics).
Whilst I’m hoping the Ovestin will help with me with the symptoms I’ve described above, I’m worried that it will make my bits swell up. Am I overthinking this?

No, no soap. I tried a teeny amount last night. Poked a bit inside to see if any reaction. Early days but i may feel a tad less sore…👍

You don't really need to be examined.

I've used Ovestin for over 15 years and simply described my symptoms to my consultant.

It's a very very weak cream. Old ladies in their 80s and 90s use it.

Just go for it daily fir 14 days then adjust

My gp has said use it twice a week 🤷‍♀️

Cestlavielife is correct. You should use it daily for two weeks, and after that you use it twice a week - or more if you need to. I still have a uterus and that was the advice from my menopause specialist. I now use it around 3 times a week.

I was prescribed this, due to dryness and frequent water infections. I use it 2 times per week. I don’t want to tempt fate, but no water infections since I started using it

That’s brilliant. I’m sure starting off at twice a week wouldn’t have much effect. I’m going to use it for 14 days then drop to twice weekly. Makes more sense doesn't x

I have had similar symptoms and was feeling super miserable. Ovestin cream worked almost straight away. Feel SO much better....

So last night I did another application. OMG the burning and discomfort kicked in after a few hours. Managed to get a bit of sleep and it was still bad when I got up this morning. After being up for two hours it went but I’m not going to use again until next week and I’m going to do the twice a week.

There's no reason for it to make you feel nauseous, it only has local action, it's not absorbed into your bloodstream. Using it for a year is the equivalent of one HRT tablet.

Funnily enough I started a thread yesterday. I have tried and tried but feel dreadful using Ovestin. Dreadful nausea and agonizing sore boobs plus a headache. Tried a number of times and have to give up as it makes me feels so grim.

Ooh I didn't see your thread, yes I'm two days in (I am on patches and pills too but for 3 months and they have been fab but still suffering from dryness) and I feel so nauseous have had a upset stomach all day with the most dreadful cramps and almost a strange taste in my mouth and overwhelming tiredness, I thought I might pass out earlier which is not like me, I think I'm going to give it up as a lost cause and go back to the doctors.

It's reassuring that you are on patches because if I ever need them there's hope as if Ovestin is the equivalent to 1 HRT patch/pill I'd have no hope if they're like Ovestin. It's also very frustrating to be told it couldn't possibly affect me in the way it does because it does!

Yes I'm on Everol 25 and Utrogestron 100mg and have found these amazing for stopping the hot flushes, the anxiety, irritability and since the second patch I felt human again, how quickly do you feel better after stopping the Ovestin?

If you are already using HRT as patches etc, it's impossible that using 1/100th of the daily dose of your patch, as Ovestin, vaginally, would give those symptoms. I'm sorry you feel so rough, but this reaction isn't down to Ovestin.

Some women may get a slight feeling of something going on in their womb or pelvic area for a week or so, as the estrogen can have a local effect, but after that time the vaginal walls thicken and that symptom would stop.

The burning feeling is common and it's not the estrogen- it's something else in the cream and really, truly, it does go away the more you use it. (I've used it for about 16 years.)

A low dose patch is roughly 0.5gms of estrogen ( like 1 pump of gel.) You'd need to apply 50 measures of Ovestin to get the same amount of estrogen. I really don't want to sound unsympathetic, but logically, it's probably something else going on.

What even when sickness and nausea are listed as side effects in the info sheet? It might well be something else but a little coincidental to me that I feel awful a couple of days after starting a new medication.

It’s a shame if it’s the Ovestin causing your nausea as it really is a miracle for the vaginal stinging and burning. It’s changed my life. Before it was like living with a constant UTI.

From what I understand the leaflet includes side effects from full HRT rather than just ovestin cream, which could account for the nausea side effects being listed - I haven't read it myself!.
