Testosterone

Hi there,

I think I'm low on testosterone, I'm using Oestogel and Ultrogestan for about 8 months and it's been working really well. But recently I've been feeling very flat, emotional and just overwhelmed by life. I'm a single parent, work full time and in the middle of an extension. So I'm sure this is to do with it too! But my hormones are definitely playing up.

I've seen you can buy testogel from Superdrug online. I have no idea if this is the right stuff, but I refuse to pay the extortionate private fees. Where is best for me to buy online and which brand please?

Thanks 🙏

I don't know, but I'd be interested to see what others say.

Are you in England? I'm guessing different countries have different prescribing rules.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/10/2022 19:51

Yes I'm in the UK - this is what I'm referring too..

Ooo! In the same position as you op. I didn't know you could buy online!

AutumnalCosyness · 09/10/2022 20:14

Has anyone here bought it independently online like this?

Winter99Mermaid · 09/10/2022 20:15

I think as a woman you can’t buy it but as a man you can? It’s very frustrating I’m currently trying to get it via my GP, they let me have a blood test which showed I had low levels but then got told ‘oh we can’t prescribe it.. yet” . If you can get it via Superdrug I’d love to know

AutumnalCosyness · 09/10/2022 20:17

But if you can buy it online, surely you can just say you're a man?

Mattsmum2 · 09/10/2022 20:19

I think this is aimed at men. It’s rubbish that if you go to a dr as a man and complain of erectile disfunction you get viagra or you can even buy it over the counter. But it a women complains she has a low libido there’s little that can be done. No wonder lots of relationships finish with the menopause 🤷🏻‍♀️

Winter99Mermaid · 09/10/2022 20:20

You do need blood tests to monitor T levels and they will send information to your registered GP I thought.

Carlycat · 09/10/2022 20:35

I had mine prescribed through a private menopause consultation and my gp has now taken over the prescription. You'll need bloods checking after 3 months for testosterone levels. Also your Oestrogen level needs to be optimised before you start taking testosterone gel
I'd recommend the menopausal not mad website / FB page for accurate, unbiased, non scaremongering menopause information

Cherryblossom200 · 09/10/2022 20:37

You can also buy Tostran from Superdrug online too! I don't know how it all works though. I'll go for a blood test first.

I'm not too sure what's going on. I've just turned 47, I still have regular periods and take ultrogestan every day (I have always had light periods so no spotting) and I've been taking under 1 pump of oestrogel. I've slowed worked up to 1 pump and just feel so odd, teary, flat, tired etc. I can't tell if I'm taking too much oestrogel or I need more. The only issue is I struggle to sleep if I take too much. I reckon if I took two pumps I'd be awake all night.

Not sure what the solution is.

Depending on where you are in the country depends on whether or not your gp is allowed to prescribe testosterone hence my first private appointment and prescription

It’s may be the utrogestan making you feel like this. Are you able to increase the oestrogel? Or can you talk to your doctor and ask? Utrogestan can make some women feel off. Oestrogen tends to be the part that lifts the mood. Perhaps taking more would counter the progesterone.

Cherryblossom200 · 09/10/2022 20:55

I did wonder about this, the ultrogestan has been fantastic at calming my anxiety (which is as a result of perimenopause) but I think it's making me feel flat, unsexy and just odd. It's only a recent thing, for a number of months I felt fine.

Testosterone should only be used for low libido in post menopausal women (ie periods have stopped) who are already adequately oestrogenised. You are on a very low dose of oestrogen. You could try the Utrogestan PV in case it is contributing to your symptoms. Testosterone is not the panacea that some would have us believe I'm afraid

I know lots of peri women who are taking it. Once fully oestrogenised.

Urs it's not licensed for women. Presumably this is the product they are using though 🤷🏻‍♀️

What is ultrogestan PV?

Per vagina. It can be inserted in the vagina for less systematic side effects, although it is not licensed for this route ( this is how I take mine )

Carlycat · 09/10/2022 23:42

Since taking Testosterone my libido and ability to climax have returned. It took around 8 weeks to kick in. It's been an absolute game changer for me Smile

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 09/10/2022 23:45

My gp prescribed testogel on the nhs (but off licence), for low libido. Surely worth a try?

Not true as I'm peri and take it. It has given me a sex life back again.

PortiaWithNoBreaks · 10/10/2022 17:52

I’ve also been prescribed testosterone albeit by a gynaecologist. She prescribed it for energy, mental clarity, vava-voom. So not specifically for low libido. For me it’s been a total game changer.

As far as I’m concerned it’s replacing what my ovaries were making, same as the oestrogen.

My dose of Tostran is one pump alternate days or half a pump daily.

It may not be true in your opinion but it is what NICE guidance and the licensing of the drug says so is why many GPs are not allowed to prescribe it
