Testosterone

Hi there,

I think I'm low on testosterone, I'm using Oestogel and Ultrogestan for about 8 months and it's been working really well. But recently I've been feeling very flat, emotional and just overwhelmed by life. I'm a single parent, work full time and in the middle of an extension. So I'm sure this is to do with it too! But my hormones are definitely playing up.

I've seen you can buy testogel from Superdrug online. I have no idea if this is the right stuff, but I refuse to pay the extortionate private fees. Where is best for me to buy online and which brand please?

Thanks 🙏

Hello
I'm not sure whether to take Testim or Testogel. Currently take oestrogel and have Marina Coil but need some testosterone for brain fog/forgetfulness, lack of energy and low libido.

I've see Testim causes a bad smell that stays with you all day. Has anyone experienced this which can make my mind up as to which one to take please?

WarriorN · 01/03/2023 20:20

I'm finding testogel good if that helps.

It's a packet of 2.5 ml (40.5mg) and I use three 1 ml syringes to suck it up. It's then 0.3 ml a day. I try to get 0.9 ml into two and 0.6 into the other to last 8 days - not always successful, but can usually manage to get 7 0.3 doses.

I'm not really confident with what a pea sized blob is yet 😆

Just smells a little alcoholic while drying.

Thank you for your reply, I have decided on testogel to.

I was told bum / upper thigh and move around. Areas where there's less or no hair. Upper inner thigh, back of knee.

Ive been changing the place daily. I've read that others find this minimises any hair

I've seen some say inner wrist but I have kids and want to minimise any possible chance of accidental contamination while it's drying

You need to get your oestrogen levels sorted before starting testosterone. Low oestrogen levels and too much progesterone can cause the symptoms you describe.

Also be aware that many women are reporting that certain batches of Oestrogel appear to be less effective - search for the bottle change thread. For me it has basically stopped working so I have been moved onto a different gel.

I also tried testosterone as my levels were non existent. It made me really aggressive, spotty, hairy (I started to grow chin whiskers) and didn’t help with libido at all. I stopped taking it when I started to feel like I could actually become physically violent. I had Androfeme through a private doctor. My friend, however, only has good things to say about it.

I would be back to the GP and asking for a review before self prescribing testosterone.

Interesting thread, thanks

I wanted it for mental clarity although told gyno I wanted it for libido.

Been on it 3 months now, my libido is through the roof, climax's are stronger and out this world. Never want to stop it.

I absolutely love it. Made no difference to my memory though.

NotLovingWFH · 02/03/2023 08:36

I’ve been on it for a year and noticed zero difference sadly, was really hoping to find my libido and a bit more zest for life. Have my annual review soon and no idea if GP will suggest I up the dose. Currently on a pea sized blob of Testim gel daily.

Testosterone should only be used for low libido in post menopausal women (ie periods have stopped) who are already adequately oestrogenised. You are on a very low dose of oestrogen. You could try the Utrogestan PV in case it is contributing to your symptoms. Testosterone is not the panacea that some would have us believe I'm afraid

It’s not only for libido ffs! It’s effective for so much more, helps sleep, helps moderate the afternoon exhaustion and the brain fog

i recognise that women have to say it’s all about low libido to get testosterone, cos lord help it if some poor bloke is suffering because his missus isn’t in the mood…

I’ve also been prescribed testosterone albeit by a gynaecologist. She prescribed it for energy, mental clarity, vava-voom. So not specifically for low libido. For me it’s been a total game changer.

As far as I’m concerned it’s replacing what my ovaries were making, same as the oestrogen.

My dose of Tostran is one pump alternate days or half a pump daily.

Please can I ask how long it took to get the, ahem, effects ?

I've been on testosterone (prescribed by NHS meno clinic) for 3 months and energy is ok but libido still not.

I live in hope (as does DH) 😬

Sorry I don't know how to quote but in response to MzHz and the ffs 🤦‍♀️
As a Clinician i can only prescribe for low libido in accordance with NICE guidelines and British Menopause Society guidelines. That's not to say it isn't helpful for other things but the evidence isn't there YET! Also read the other responses - it doesn't work for everyone - only about 50% of my patients find it beneficial

That's really helpful thanks. I wish there was more research on women.

I'm not sure why some posters are getting shirty that we are asking it for libido problems. As you say it's the NICE guidelines!

I didn't even have a partner when I asked for it.

As I've mentioned before I really wanted it to make a difference to my brain fog. But haven't seen any change at all. Libido is through the roof though :).

Isaidnomorecrisps · 13/03/2023 13:20

Coming to this late but the Newson clinic does a testosterone only appointment which I just had. Well worth investigating.

to @GingerHippo - Newson is carrying out research on this and prescribes testosterone for non-libido related issues.

It troubles me that so many women suffer greatly (I did) through menopause because GPs do not appear to understand. I don’t know a single woman who has been treated appropriately. It’s a mess and GPs permit it to continue.
