Can nutritionists / experts help me re Magnesium

I am suffering with peri-meno symptoms of heart palpitations & early waking/ feeling of doom/unwarranted panic - on hrt but heard magnesium is good too. But there are so many types/doses. Can anyone advise me on which is best for my specific symptoms. The Holland & Barrett staff are lovely but not the best qualified I fear!

I'm on HRT and have been for almost 7 years. Still do get occasional heart palpitations and hotness etc.

I take these which I think do help with sleep. Expensive- I think £27 ish with postage.....

And I rarely drink anymore. Just can't.

whatisforteamum · 07/10/2022 07:59

I started taking magnesium 6 weeks ago after dm was prescribed it.
The first time affected my tum.
Now I'm on the Boots ones.
Two tablets before bed and the sleep is amazing.
I'm already on her but theses help my sleep and anxiety immensely.
I only wish I knew this before.

Benjispruce4 · 08/10/2022 07:20

I took Nytol herbal last night after a week of poor sleep and just woken up. Slept through.😀
Ive stocked up on Well Wonan 50+ too.

Palpitations can be caused by anaemia, so worth checking that out.

They can also be a symptom of primary hyperparathyroidism. Mine stopped when my malfunctioning parathyroid was removed.

Fairislefandango · 09/10/2022 22:36

Be careful with magnesium. My DM and I both tried it. Amazing for sleep, but gave me awful stomach problems. My mum even worse - she was bed-ridden and vomiting! I'd be tempted to try a different variety, as it improved my sleep so much, but I'd be too worried about it causing stomach problems again.

What is in nytol?

queenrollo · 10/10/2022 09:08

@Fairislefandango which form did you try? I cannot take mag citrate at all. The effect on my stomach/gastric system was awful.
Glycinate I find more tolerable, no side effects at all.

beingsunny · 10/10/2022 09:49

Can you see a naturopath?
They will need a full rack of blood tests to inform the types of magnesium or any other supplements you may benefit from, if you want to go down that route find a good one, they can be life changing. Everything is tailored

I take magnesium malate in the mornings and magnesium glycinate in the evenings. Works well with no problems at all. I've always been told to avoid magnesium citrate because it causes stomach issues for so many people.

Fairislefandango · 10/10/2022 14:34

Ooh that's interesting- thank you! I already have ongoing stomach issues due to (self-diagnosed) issues with gluten and dairy, so the magnesium side-effects were the final straw! I might cautiously try malate or glycinate then!

Benjispruce4 · 10/10/2022 15:00

Nytol herbal contains valerian and hops. The tablets are quite smelly but they switch my thoughts off. Sleeping well at the moment but they are for temporary relief only.

Banana2079 · 10/10/2022 15:02

I’m 43 and had these symptoms
they weren’t the peri menopause but severe anxiety and too much sugar

ChocChipOwl · 10/10/2022 15:04

Magnessence by Firebird nutrition. Spot on formulations, and small batch made. I've been taking for ages now and see a real difference

(PS I don't own this brand!!)

JinglingHellsBells · 06/10/2022 18:02

Palpitations are not [always] linked to the health of hearts. Palps are a sign of anxiety, so more MH issue.

@twordle One thing to be aware of with magnesium is it can act as a laxative.
I used to take a combined calcium & magnesium supplement ( 400mcgs mag a day) and it really affected my bowels.

Jaysus yes do beware. Speaking from experience

But this is a multi-vitamin rather than magnesium supplement? It contains magnesium but (a little) less than the minimum required daily amount of 400mg and it's magnesium oxide which is considered to be the least well absorbed (so less effective). Companies use magnesium oxide because it's cheap!

OP is better off looking for magnesium malate, glycinate or threonate as these are considered to be more effective. Even better if she looks for elemental magnesium (a good brand will tell you what proportion is elemental).

This is a brand I've used in the evening:

Blatantly bookmarking also as I'm like you OP ...,thanks for the thread 😘

ChocChipOwl · 10/10/2022 16:02

@HundredMilesAnHour oh! I didn't know that. I was only recommending what works for me and what I feel good on but that's interesting. I'll look up your recommendation ... I'll also closely examine the Magnessence I'm taking.

I did know it was a multivitamin but I thought the amount in it was sufficient?

twordle · 10/10/2022 16:03

Just to say it's mostly the heart palpitations I want it to work on, not the early waking.. I can deal with that! Called doc back & they just prescribed me more propronal and said go up intake?? Said 24 hr heart monitor I had in the summer would pick up any serious underlying issues even if I wasn't symptomatic at the time? I don't really want to be taking beta blockers & fact they don't even relieve it makes me question the prescription further. I've been taking magnesium taurate as read it's good for heart but no one has mentioned that. I really have nothing to be anxious about so why this physical symptom of anxiety?? It's really getting me down & actually probably is making me anxious!!!

@HundredMilesAnHour can you recommend a really really good multivitamin? I've been taking omega 3, Magnessence, iron (prescribed) and the Firebird bedtime vitamins

Maybe it's a bit much

I take this Life Extension multivitamin. It was recommended to me by a nutritionist and a doctor he works with:

bigvits.co.uk/life-extension-two-per-day-multivitamin-120-tablets.html?utm_source=google_shopping&gclid=Cj0KCQjwhY-aBhCUARIsALNIC07OIWvDOOWYXi0Buk44omFWTAlG_NalniOi2dJCNvpDpV4l-aiIA50aAkyhEALw_wcB

It's on Amazon and other sites also.

He also recommended fish oils from Nordic Naturals as being "the best" so I take those too. And of course vitamin D.

I take magnesium (and various other supplements) following recent endocrine surgery (long story!) so have had a LOT of guidance from some very experienced people re my supplementation (I'm also peri-menopausal AND have long Covid damage to my nervous system so it's all a bit complex).

@HundredMilesAnHour thanks- I'll look into these. I just want to take the best for me for what I feel I need and not take what I feel I don't.

I am taking the Nordic naturals already so that's something!

It's such a minefield.

Battlecat98 · 10/10/2022 17:21
