Menopause & the coil

Just wondering if anyone has any advice really . Im 48 and have the coil fitted , think it's my 3rd one I never have any periods without . My periods were very scant 10 years ago when I was ttc, literally half a day and that was it .
About 2 months ago I started waking up in the night at 4am absolutely boiling like someone was blowing a hair dryer in my face , I had that every night for a month then it just stopped .
Could that have been the start of the menopause or ,( I know this might sound silly ) could that have been it ?

Yes early walking and hot flushes are both menopause symptoms. I'd book in with the gp.

I posted a very similar question a few days ago. I'm 46 and just had my fourth Mirena fitted. The nurse said it might see me through without the need for hrt or I may just need one type. I've also been getting night sweats but only this summer. It's only now that it's cooler and I'm still getting them that I realised it's probably peri menopause.

Peri with mirena- how do I know? - www.mumsnet.com/talk/menopause/4626199-peri-with-mirena-how-do-i-know

That's almost certainly menopausal hot flushes; at your age you'll be either perimenopausal or post menopause, but it can be hard to tell when periods have stopped naturally if you have Mirena. I had a similar experience, some hot flushes around 48/49 but wasn't having periods anyway, then realised my Mirena had probably run out of hormones way earlier as it was 10 years old. The menopause specialist at our local menopause clinic said it didn't matter; HRT is prescribed according to your symptoms, if you decide to use it, not according to when you're periods stopped. I was clear that I did want HRT so I had the Mirena replaced as part of that, but I do wonder if I would have had any more periods otherwise. Just can't tell! You may find the articles or podcasts on perimenopause here useful :

@Theimpossiblegirl thank you , I did look before I posted but couldn't find anything . So are your night time sweats still happening ? Mine lasted approximately a month then stopped .

@DivorcedAndDelighted my coil was changed about a year ago and the nurse said I could have this one until I was 55 then I would have one through the menopause by then . Find it odd that I had the night sweats then they just stopped . My periods were virtually non existent years ago wonder if this means I will sail through the menopause 🤔

Menopause symptoms often come and go, so I think it's quite common for women to have a phase of hot flushes, then it dies down, then it resumes. Some women carry on having phases of hot flushes for many years, while for others it's over soon. You can't really predict how long it will last for you. Menopause is defined as when your periods have stopped for a year, and I think in the past we've tended to think of the whole process as just the brief time when your periods stop, but actually perimenopause often goes on for years. You only know it's over with hindsight.

Mirena is a good thing to have in place to control period - related symptoms, but also because if you have HRT, it's a very low-dose way to get the progesterone element. However, this doesn't really mean it's doing the job of HRT as the main thing there is Oestrogen replacement. The progesterone bit is mostly just to protect your uterus if you're taking Oestrogen. It's the oestrogen that relieves hot flushes and the major menopause symptoms. I was getting sporadic hot flushes that I didn't recognise for a while, and very dry skin, and anxiety that I put down to life events. But after a low dose of estrogen gel, all that went away. I hadn't realised how far along I was, I suppose.

@DivorcedAndDelighted thank you that's really informative. I don't have any friends to ask really as all my friends are about 10 years younger than me !

Hi I'm nearly 60 and had a coil fitted last week as part of my HRT ...the marina gives me the progesterone and protection my uterus needs and I also use oestrogen patch twice weekly.
If you are menopausal adding oestrogen with your coil will really help...but obviously speak to gp/meno nurse.
