Vertigo? Really? Another Meno Symptom?

Azizai · 05/05/2022 22:14

I have developed vertigo symptoms overnight, woke on Wednesday morning, went to the loo, felt a bit lightheaded and lay back down and the room started spinning. Felt slightly giddy for an hour or two afterwards but fine for the rest of the day.

Woke up on Thursday morning, not as bad as the day before but dizzy just the same, no room spinning though. It has lasted all day, particularly if I bend down and stand straight again. Got home in the evening lay on the couch and the room started spinning again and I felt nauseous.

A quick search on a Meno FB page and apparently its another symptom?

Anyone else had this?

I got it really bad when I had Covid last year.

DownTownAbbey2 · 05/05/2022 22:16

Anti sickness tablets from the GP and eating toast helped.

bellac11 · 05/05/2022 22:18

Yes, over the last 18 months it comes and goes, more so when Im due on (which is now very heavy and regular as clockwork when for over 30 years I had pcos symptoms and didnt have periods very often)

But it can come on at any time, awful.

I was given tablets for labrythitis but that was after phoning the doctor, speaking to a receptionist and not beign seen or spoken to by the doctor before the prescription was sent to the chemist. No oversight whatsoever.

I done a LFT to check but I suppose I should keep doing them just in case. Thanks for the reply.

Thanks for that. Was yours related to Meno?

Good god, sounds like my GP surgery. I just don't even want to call them these days.

I don’t know, I’m 53 and don’t get many symptoms as I take HRT.

I had this when I had a virus. I felt like I was drunk, it was horrid. It passed after about a week or so. Hope you feel better soon.

QueenOfHiraeth · 05/05/2022 22:27

Everything can be a meno symptom though according to some, the problem is deciding what is or isn't for you.
Someone brought the Louise Newson menopause symptom list into work without headings and asked all the staff to complete it. That diagnosed almost everyone in the place as having significant menopausal symptoms, including men and people of both sexes under 30
That doesn't minimise the severity of symptoms for some women but I do think attributing so much to it makes it hard to see what is or isn't related

WandaWomblesaurus · 05/05/2022 22:31

I have vertigo as a symptom - it's diminished now with HRT.
Also get the gp to check there's nothing else underlying. Can also be allergy related.

Furball · 05/05/2022 22:33

I had it last year but didn't associate it to the menopause

The Dr told me to google the Epley manoeuvre which I did and it literally cured it instantly. Give it a go

really sorry it won't let me link to youtube - but if you look it up on there theres quite a few.

Its the crystals in your ear which have dislodged and thats why you feel sick. You have to try and get them back in their right place. Like one of those ball bearing puzzles you get in a cracker! Definitely worth trying it, like I said it cured me instantly

I agree with this. I said something similar that gps were being lazy by just saying 'its the menopause' to women and a poster got really defensive about it

The problem is for me, is that my GP surgery is rubbish and made it clear that they wont test me and say that if Im the right age and my periods have changed then to assume its peri menopause and to expect this for a few years or whatever

i dont know what levels of hormones I have or whats changed or what that might mean for me. My migraines have cleared up considerably in the last 18 months which makes me think that this must be related somehow to estrogen for me, but it makes me wary of HRT for the other symptoms in case they bring my migraines back.

comfortablyfrumpy · 05/05/2022 22:35

I had it this morning. Not had it before. When I got up the room was spinning and it carried on for a good five minutes.

I put it down to getting out of bed too quickly (BP tends to be on the low side) but now you have me wondering!

JohannSebastianBach · 05/05/2022 22:37

Could you have labyrinthitis? I had it last year. It started out of nowhere, just came on suddenly and I was throwing up because I was so dizzy. Had no pain, no temp.

Was given antihistamines and it gradually eased.

You can get vertigo if your ears are blocked with wax and wax get stickier as we age, so worth risking that out with a physical check? I hope you feel better soon OP!

@bellac11 My GP said similar, the problem with that is we are likely to dismiss serious issues assuming Meno when we really shouldn't be. I can't get anywhere near my GP, I mentioned on the phone about palpitations/irregular heartbeat and breathlessness while she was telling me she won't give me HRT but can prescribe a cocktail of other drugs to treat individual symptoms.

Thanks, I doubt my GP would be interested in checking my earwax but I think I'll get some OTC drops just to rule it out.

Like pp, I had vertigo like symptoms with Covid but only got a positive test after 3 days of lightheadedness and motion induced dizziness.

BOOTS52 · 05/05/2022 23:12

I had that a few years ago in my 40's when peri meno first started and it was very scary. I remember one day out walking and kept nearly falling over to the side and could not retain my balance was horrible. Am ok now and don't have that and in early 50's and just started hrt as mood so low and no energy and brain fog which has now lifted thank god. See your doctor and get your bloods tested and talk to them and see what they say as it is very scary. Also get iron levels checked.

Furball · 06/05/2022 16:23

@Azizai - How are you now? did you try the Epley manoeuvre? Like I said with me it cured it instantly, so if you are still suffering - give it a go.
