How did you get your prescription for testosterone

One of my reasons for starting HRT was lack of libido. I’ve been on it for 6 months and an now on 3 pumps of oestrogel as well as Utrogestan for 12 days but no sign of my libido returning. This makes me really sad and is effecting me quite a lot. It makes me feel old and past my prime. I think I might benefit from testosterone but have no idea how to get it. How did you manage to get your prescription if you’re on it?

Interested to know this too ! I would like my libido back too!

ViaRia · 01/05/2022 09:36

Surely, like any other medicine… you present your symptoms to your doctor and if he thinks testosterone is required he will prescribe it..?

I realise this isn’t quite the answer you we’re looking for and I don’t mean to sound rude at all. But why would you want to self medicate? Bodies are complicated. Am I right in understanding that you’ve only given your current treatment plan 12 days?! That’s no time at all.

Runaround50 · 01/05/2022 09:40

I'm in the same boat, plus all my 'bits' are shriveled and non existent!

I think you have to get referred to a menopause clinic and state that you want it purely for libido as it's not currently licensed for women. I do believe that testosterone does have other benefits too.

Good luck 🤞

Go private, the only way to have a decent discussion with an expert who can then write to your Doctor with the right prescription for you.

Runaround50 · 01/05/2022 09:45

ViaRia,
You have not read the OPs thread correctly.
She has been on her gel for SIX MONTHS.
She takes utrogestan for 12 DAYS,which is cyclical. One assumes she still has periods or cyclical suits her better.

Testosterone is NOT licensed for women's use. The only way to get it, is to speak to a menopause specialist and ask the GP to prescribe that way.

It so not about self medicating, but trying to resume libido, which the loss off is making her feel sad.

I’m interested in this too. I’ve been on the same HRT as OP but for just over 3 months. I’ve just had my 3 month review and a new 6 mi th prescription (just before the 3 month limit for oestrogel) so when I have next need a prescription I plan to ask to be referred to a menopause specialist with a view to having testosterone, if they aren’t willing or able to prescribe it themselves. I imagine I will have to wait mo this for an appointment.

In fact, thinking about it, I think I will call for a GP appointment sooner, as getting a consultant slot is likely to take months. I just want to give the oestrogel a bit longer to see if it sorts my libido out, now I’m on 3 pumps instead of 2.

imstilljenny2 · 01/05/2022 14:42

I asked my GP for it for lack of libido and she referred me to the local menopause clinic. I waited a couple of months for my referral (pre covid) and the consultant at the clinic started testosterone. She wrote to my GP with info on dosing and advised my GP to check a testosterone blood level a few months after starting treatment. My GP has prescribed it on repeat prescription for me every month since then with no issues. It hasn't really worked to improve my libido unfortunately but I want to stay on it to improve skeletal muscle strength and concentration etc.

imstilljenny2 · 01/05/2022 14:42

Oh and I should add I use Oestrogel 4 pumps daily with Utrogestan daily.

IShouldBeSoLurky · 01/05/2022 15:38

After 9 months on oestrogen I told my GP I was feeling great but libido was still AWOL. She prescribed it without me having to ask specifically.

MrsDoctor · 01/05/2022 15:53

I've got an appointment at the Newson clinic next week just for this purpose - my memory is awful! They import testosterone for women from Australia under a special licence.

My GP referred me to an NHS menopause clinic. I have been on Testosterone (Trostan) for about 3 years.

Its now on repeat prescription from my GP.

IsThisMyMLC · 01/05/2022 16:32

I asked my GP for it - explained my reasons why (lack of libido, low energy levels etc.) and was given a prescription fairly easily.

One thing I would say is that it wasn't the magic cure I was hoping for - I've been on it for over a year and still have zero libido. I actually don't think it's had any positive effect, if I'm honest.

gunnersgold · 01/05/2022 16:32

@NickyNora did it help?

whenwillthemadnessend · 01/05/2022 16:35

Watching. Anyone on it. Did it help with joint and muscle pain.

NickyNora · 01/05/2022 18:01

Yes it has helped.

But I'm not like I was before the menopause but it definitely helped with labido.

I started off using it twice a week, then 3 now I use it every second day, took about 6 months to feel the benefits.

Namaste6 · 01/05/2022 23:10

@MrsDoctor That's right, they do. It's called Androfeme. I got mine from my private menopause specialist. You use the tiniest amount daily. It can take a few months to kick in.

imstilljenny2 · 02/05/2022 09:24

@whenwillthemadnessend probably helped my joint pain. I feel no pain at all in any of my joints. I'm also almost underweight and exercise most days so I can't say for sure if it's this or testosterone that helps.

whenwillthemadnessend · 02/05/2022 20:36

@imstilljenny2

Did you have joint pain previously due to meno. ? Thanks

whenwillthemadnessend · 02/05/2022 20:37

Also anyone on testosterone. Did it make you put on weight.

I put in tonnes on hrt and my boobs got huge which is one reason I've come off it. Asking with long and frequent bleeding and worse moods.

imstilljenny2 · 02/05/2022 20:42

@whenwillthemadnessend I'm trying to think back as I started HRT at 43 and I'm nearly 48 now. Yes I think I had some joint pain which disappeared after I started HRT/test.
I also didn't put an ounce of weight on when I started both however I log my calorie intake most days on My Fitness Pal so keep a close eye on what I'm eating.

ArtVandalay · 02/05/2022 20:48

My local GPs refuse to prescribe it. Try to get referred through my insurance, but they don't cover menopause matters.

So I am now waiting to see the gynae clinic. Waited 5 months so far.

Sonofagun · 06/05/2022 10:06

Postcode lottery. I had it prescribed yesterday by my doctor - no problem whatsoever. It has been prescribed off licence and I had to have a blood test done just to check everything was normal. Once I get the blood test results back I can start on the testosterone. I'm also on Oestrogel and have the Mirena coil fitted. I asked for it for lack of libido and brain fog.....let's hope it helps!

whenwillthemadnessend · 06/05/2022 12:12

Please update on how it worked for you @Sonofagun

WombatChocolate · 06/05/2022 14:08

Which is the best testosterone to ask for, if lack of libido? Is it restored or something else?

thanks.

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 06/05/2022 14:19

My GP also prescribed it, very little problem - I did have to stress no libido and she made sure I understood off licence etc. I also had a pre-start blood test and just had the 6-week test yesterday so we'll see what shows up in my blood but it has REALLY REALLY WORKED FOR ME! And for DH.

We also upped my evorel to deal with my flat mood.
