HRT constant crying, help.

Sorry, this might have been asked before but I'm 48 and started HRT 3 weeks ago. I really haven't stopped crying since, am anxious and irritable. I'm going to ring the GP this morning and request a call as I just want to stop it. I'm already on sertraline for years but feel this is undoing everything. Has anyone had a reaction like this? I'm on oestrogel and progesterone tablet. Thanks, feel like I'm losing my mind

Sorry you are struggling Flowers.

I can't offer any advice regarding sertraline and HRT, I hope you've managed to speak to a hcp.

All I can say is the first few weeks of HRT can have different effects on women, I know some people who haven't had any problems and others who have struggled with increasing anxiety which may be totally unrelated but of course hard to pinpoint what is causing what.

Good luck.

Are you using the progesterone every day or 12 days a month?

If it's daily that might not suit you and you'd be better off with the sequential regime of 12 days per month.

Also, bear in mind you may have felt like this anyway without HRT if you have symptoms. You can just stop if you want to- you don't need permission form your Dr, but if you are doing the monthly form with a withdrawal bleed after 4 weeks, you should continue to the end of the cycle.

Naughty1205 · 12/02/2022 19:56

Thank you both for getting back to me. I'm looking into alternatives now with gp. I already started the withdrawal bleed Confused

Yes me exactly. Am progesterone intolerant, apparently. By 5 months was crying all day and feeling like I was having a breakdown. Crash stopped all HRT. Really need it, don't know what to do next.

So sorry this happened to you too Flowers

Naughty1205 · 12/02/2022 22:35

It's so shit isn't it, you did well to keep at it for 5 months. I'll update this thread with results from visit to GP who apparently is very knowledgeable and somewhat of a guru on alternative HRT so hope to come back with info that may help!

I have been on hrt for six weeks and feel like ending myself. I'm actually going to call in sick to work tomorrow as I am unfit to work and call the doctor. Everyone says to persevere but I don't think I can. Thought it was bad without the HRT with symptoms. I have made 3 massive errors at work in past three weeks. My Braun is not my own. And speak to my husband like shit. I'm raging about everything and I can't stop crying. Hope this helps that you're not alone. Your post has certainly helped me.

Ugh, you poor thing, yes, felt exactly the same, like I was losing my mind. The crying! And I felt murderous. Unhinged really. I'm going to be arranging consult with female GP, the expert. I think some of us are super sensitive to oestrogen, as the crying started before I started the progesterone. You can stop cold turkey. I would absolutely do this, Dr told me on Friday that that was fine to do. You know what, I'll live with symptoms, they were a walk in the park compared to what I just experienced on HRT! I stopped on Thurs/ Friday so just starting but already feel more rational. Will update the thread for info soon. Hope your GP is kind and sympathetic and that you find an alternative to suit you Flowers

Sorry to hear this, What type are you on? I was tablet form and crying a lot but recently went onto the patches and not crying anymore. I have things to cry about too so it's the hormones.

Go back to your GP 💐

Oestrogen gel and take bio identical progesterone vaginally

wildthingsinthenight · 14/02/2022 22:02

Joining. I hear you OP.
It is on the progesterone part of my tablets that everything goes downhill for me. I feel irritable, weepy and like I am having a breakdown. Having spoken to my gp she has upped my tablets to 2mgs (for oestrogen and progesterone) which she thinks I should try but surely that will be worse?? I've said I will try it.
I'm terrified I'll have to stop the whole thing and go back to hot flushes and insomnia and bladder problems.
Good luck at the gp OP

Icecreamandapplepie · 14/02/2022 22:16

Try the progesterone vaginally!

wildthingsinthenight · 14/02/2022 23:40

Is that definitely safe?

Icecreamandapplepie · 14/02/2022 23:46

Yes, it's how they do it in Frsnce and other European countries, and is often prescribed by specialists (off licence) in this country too.
I am a pmdd sufferer, and progesterone intolerant so was very surprised to find this works for me.
Prescribed this way privately by a menopause specialist for me. Game changer, saved my life...

Thank you that is really helpful. So that is for any brand of progesterone?
wildthingsinthenight · 15/02/2022 09:10

My progesterone is not bioidentical it is synthetic. Does this make a difference?

@Naughty1205 and others suffering ..this is interesting?

Icecreamandapplepie · 15/02/2022 09:35

I'm sorry, I'm new to it all too. All I know is I'm on bio identical progesterone and that vaginally is the best way to take it if progesterone has a detrimental effect on you. I've suffered with pmdd my whole life and was terrified to start the progesterone (the pill made me cry non stop, constantly angry etc) but it has had no effect on me this way

Icecreamandapplepie · 15/02/2022 09:36

Bio identical is the gold standard, I'd push for that either way

Thanks so much. I am seeing my gp Thursday and will show her your post. So pleased to hear it all worked out for you.
Icecreamandapplepie · 15/02/2022 10:39

Good luck. Hope it works for you

wildthingsinthenight · 17/02/2022 11:35

@Naughty1205 how have you got on? Did you have any luck?
I have my gp appt today and so worried about it. I just don't think she will be very receptive. Just writing some notes to take about bioidentical progesterone. I feel she might prescribe that at a push but not to use vaginally. But I might do it anyway. I've seen the dose is half the oral dose from the info on the Newson Clinic website so every other night. Last time she kept talking about oestrogel and utrogestan being for women without a womb!? I feel I know more that her at this point....which is a worry. What if she refuses??

Have a bad heavy period today obvs because of the increased oestrogen. Such fun Confused

Icecreamandapplepie · 17/02/2022 12:53

It would be oestrogel on its own for women without a womb. The utrogestan is added to prevent problems with the womb lining.

If that's what she actually said, you need a different doctor tbh as she's clueless.

wildthingsinthenight · 17/02/2022 15:03

She is clueless but she did prescribe what I wanted! I basically told her what i thought i needed, she looked at all up then agreed.
Not vaginally though. What would you do? Try it orally first in case i can tolerate it?

wildthingsinthenight · 17/02/2022 15:04

Or just go for vaginal without " clearing it" with her first?

Icecreamandapplepie · 18/02/2022 00:00

Sorry for delay.

Can only give you my experience which is vaginally doesn't send me crazy.
