Can menopause give false positive pregnancy tests?

I think I'm menopausal. My periods are really irregular and I have up to a 45 day cycle. My GP has run a blood test and said that my oestrogen level is normal and has no idea why. It's 43 days since my last period and I just did a pregnancy test which came back positive. Please tell me this is another menopause symptom!

Erm I'm no doctor but I don't think producing HCG is a menopause symptom, did the blood test your doctor did not check for pregnancy. How likely is pregnancy do you have unprotected sex, have you previously been fertile. I'd have to go and buy a digital to see it in words.

LubaLuca · 21/08/2021 22:07

Pregnant tests detect pregnancy hormones, so no - I don't think this could possibly be something to do with the menopause

Blueskythinking123 · 21/08/2021 22:07

Sorry OP but i would imagine a positive pregnant test means you are pregnant. Do you have a second test to confirm?

wonderstuff · 21/08/2021 22:08

That's got to be a bit of a shock. You won't be the first or last woman to put pregnancy down to the menopause, pretty sure the only way to get a positive pregnancy test is being pregnant though. Good luck.

kitkatsky · 21/08/2021 22:09

If it's a blue dye ignore. I had loads of positives on those before I was actually pregnant

Er, no. It's a pregnancy symptom.

Check again, then take some time to think about what you want if you are.

(However regarding oestrogen, testing levels is pointless. Your hormone levels fluctuate in peri / menopause so it's not worth checking in that sense. You should instead look at wider symptoms).

forgottenforest · 21/08/2021 22:19

How old are you?

BlodwynBludd · 21/08/2021 22:23

Just done another pregnancy test immediately positive. Really unlikely we've only had sex twice this cycle and I was tracking to make sure not during ovulation. Is there anything else that can cause a positive? I've been having menopause symptoms for a year now. Blood tests were 5 months ago.

I'm 37. Family history of very early menopause.

I think it's the other way round. Pregnancy can give false menopause symptoms

I hope it's a nice shock for you

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/08/2021 22:26

If your tests are positive and you are sexually active then you are pregnant. It’s normal to ovulation at different times if you are peri.

CustardGoodJamGoodMeatGood · 21/08/2021 22:26

2 out of 2 tests are positive OP, I would say you're pregnant. I don't think anything else would cause a strong, immediate positive

EarringsandLipstick · 21/08/2021 22:26

There are some very rare situations but don't go googling it.

It's definitely not menopause related.

You're 37, having sex & have a positive pregnancy test.

If it walks like a duck ...

Hope you're ok with the outcome, regardless.

MyDcAreMarvel · 21/08/2021 22:26

37 is really young despite family history op, I think you are just in denial.

fallfallfall · 21/08/2021 22:30

ha ha ha
feel free to see a dr. i'm sure a heartbeat comes next followed by kicking.
your family history might be early perimenopause but actual menopause is still a while away.

Redwinestillfine · 21/08/2021 22:31

Sounds like you're having a baby.

GreenTeaPingPong · 21/08/2021 22:31

I just googled and found that it is possible for menopause to cause false positive.

9. Menopause or post-menopause
While it may seem impossible, women who are going through menopause or have already gone through this hormonal change can have detectable levels of hCG in their urine and blood. Even though women at this stage can't get pregnant, they can get a false-positive pregnancy test result.
UMiami health news

However, I think it's more likely that you're pregnant.
I hope you get the result you want Flowers

Doyoumind · 21/08/2021 22:31

I'm sorry OP but producing hormones which give you a positive tests is a symptom of pregnancy not menopause. You've had sex. Why would you think you aren't pregnant?

StarryStarrySocks · 21/08/2021 22:35

I'm 41, very irregular periods (cycles ranging from 30 to 60 days) and if I got a positive pregnancy test, I would still assume I was pregnant. Hmm

SamVimes6 · 21/08/2021 22:36

Yes!

To answer your headliner question, yes. Go see your doctor.

EarringsandLipstick · 21/08/2021 22:36

@GreenTeaPingPong

It's rare, and tend to be weakly positive results & there's no increase in levels. It would be easy to rule this out with a GP visit & blood test.

SamVimes6 · 21/08/2021 22:37

But you’re 37, you’re most probably pregnant.

BlodwynBludd · 21/08/2021 22:41

Will try and get a drs appointment. DH is very happy.

OP posts:
LifesNotEnidBlyton · 21/08/2021 22:43

Even if you were menopausal OP you can still get pregnant if having unprotected sex until you've been fully though it. So yes, you seem to be pregnant.

rosie39forever · 22/08/2021 08:32

You're not menopausal until you've gone without a period for 12 months, you're peri menopausal and can definitely fall pregnant so with two positives I would say you are well and truly pregnant!
