Has anyone gone through the Menopause without any issues?

I've just realised that I didn't have a period last month. I've been very busy with work, and didn't really clock it. But I've looked in my diary and my last period was at the start of June, so 9 weeks ago.

I appreciate that it's only one missed period, so may not be the start of the menopause but I'm almost 55 so it's going to happen at some point soon

The thing is, I've Googled peri menopause and don't have any of the symptoms. Has anyone gone into menopause with the only sign being missed periods. Or do the symptoms tend to come once your periods have actually stopped?

Some women do indeed have few to no symptoms during peri/menopause. Consider yourself very, very fortunate.

Cocogreen · 07/08/2021 05:00

Last period at 51.
I used to get a bit sweaty at night, but otherwise no symptoms. My mother was the same.

MissMarplesGoddaughter · 07/08/2021 05:11

No problems here either. My periods just got lighter and further apart and then just stopped. I had about 3 hot flushes and that was it. My sis, mother and grandmother were the same.

samandpoppysmummy · 07/08/2021 05:16

I had my last period at 49. They went straight from being completely regular, every 28 days, to stopping completely. I'm now 53. I had about six months of occasional hot flushes and sweaty nights, which started just after I realised my periods had stopped. Other than that I had no noticeable symptoms and haven't had any HRT treatment.

TheGallopingGourmet · 07/08/2021 05:17

Mum and 2 sisters had problem free menopause. I have had a thorougly misersble menopause.

fallfallfall · 07/08/2021 05:20

Similar to the other posters. Longer spacing between periods then nothing. Mild hot flashes. Not on HRT I’m 63, now this all happened when 48.

JinglingHellsBells · 07/08/2021 08:52

(I hope insomnia isn't one of your symptoms- posting at 4.40am :) )

Seriously, give it a bit longer than 9 weeks.

I had no peri symptoms till almost 53 but once I'm missed 4 periods in a row, the flushes came hourly and my sleep pattern changed for the worse.

CarrieMoonbeams · 07/08/2021 08:58

Mild hot flushes for me (still ongoing, last period 3 years ago), but apart from that, absolutely no issues whatsoever.

Cookerhood · 07/08/2021 09:00

Other than insomnia I had nothing. Just gaps between my periods in my 40s. Two gaps of 11 months.

Cookerhood · 07/08/2021 09:00

Oh, and weight gain.

oneglassandpuzzled · 07/08/2021 09:02

My problems didn’t start immediately. I slowly noticed that my sense of fun had gone and I felt angry and couldn’t sleep and was very hot at night. It happened over the course of a year or so.

Apeirogon · 07/08/2021 09:03

I haven't been through it yet but my mum sailed through with no issues so I'm hoping I'll be the same!

Mantlemoose · 07/08/2021 09:04

Periods stopped and that was it. Few flushes that was it. Done and dusted in 3 months.

DinosaurDiana · 07/08/2021 09:06

My periods have got closer together in peri !

BorderlineHappy · 07/08/2021 09:07

Last period about 18 months ago.
Only had some insomnia but was found to have another cause for that.
I've had no hot flushes.
No other symptoms.Touch wood.

Bluntness100 · 07/08/2021 09:08

I wouldn’t say no issues I had terrible flooding, my periods became irregular, I’d miss one or two then the next one was like they all came at once, and was horrific, really, really bad cramps, awful flooding, but past that, I had some insomnia and mild anxiety, night sweats and that’s it

My last period was about ten months ago, all the anxiety, insomnia night sweats have gone and I feel totally fine, just no periods.

I’d say other than the periods I got off quite lightly.

Popetthetreehugger · 07/08/2021 09:09

I had a complete hysterectomy 3 years ago at 56 , so l must be post menopause by now !? No symptoms, libido flags a bit 🤷‍♀️

Greydog · 07/08/2021 09:12

No real problems, periods - always irregular - stopped and I did have a few hot flushes, but that was it. No HRT either

JinglingHellsBells · 07/08/2021 09:16

For the record, OP, 25% of women have no symptoms but the rest do.

It's also important to know that visible symptoms of menopause are just one thing (flushes etc.)

Bone health declines rapidly in the first 5 years after menopause.
Sadly, it's never picked up till much later.

If I was in charge, I'd push for all women to have a bone density scan at 55, and forget about smears as national screening.
Something like 2K women a year die from cervical cancer, compared to 100, 000 deaths annually from complications from osteoporosis.

Between 1:2 and 1:3 women develop osteoporosis after 50.

You can buy a DEXA scan for around £200 and if you had an early menopause (under 51) you should ask your GP for a scan or pay for it, if possible.

So far it's going relatively well for me, I feel a bit hotter than usual, am a bit chubbier than usual and feel a bit less fond of sex than usual.

I am very stressed for various life events so these may also have an impact, not just the menopause.

I have always been in very good nick physically and done lots of exercise, aerobic, weight bearing, etc.

My mental health, however, has always been a bit fragile, probe to stress and worry, and it's definitely getting worse but as mentioned there may be external aggravating factors. I am fighting this!

I am 53 and no periods for over a year how.

Also I see people really suffering and definitely they are not dramatising. It's really hard for some women.

SueSaid · 07/08/2021 09:34

'compared to 100, 000 deaths annually from complications from osteoporosis.'

This is a shocking statistic. Could you link it? I've googled and I can find stats regarding osteoporosis occurrence. For example:

'Osteoporosis affects over 3 million people in the UK.More than 500,000 people receive hospital treatment for fragility' from the nhs site www.nhs.uk/conditions/osteoporosis/

I'm always looking for more info and 100,000 deaths a year from osteoporosis complications would seem staggering.

Infact this study shows more men die from osteoporosis than women. Happy to be told it is a flawed or discredited study.

My periods just stopped and a few months later a had a few hot flushes. Compared to a lot of people the menopause has been a doddle.

SueSaid · 07/08/2021 09:38

Ime anecdotally talking to family and friends vaginal atrophy is the most common issue. Easily treated with topical oestrogen cream which has no health risks. Such a lack of widely available info about this, many women think any treatment is 'hrt' when a topical cream is not classed as that but is still highly effective.

StCharlotte · 07/08/2021 09:39

I'm very grateful to have "sailed" through it and I never had PMT either. My DH is also very grateful Grin

My mother on the other hand turned into a total termagant.
