Has anyone gone through the Menopause without any issues?

I've just realised that I didn't have a period last month. I've been very busy with work, and didn't really clock it. But I've looked in my diary and my last period was at the start of June, so 9 weeks ago.

I appreciate that it's only one missed period, so may not be the start of the menopause but I'm almost 55 so it's going to happen at some point soon

The thing is, I've Googled peri menopause and don't have any of the symptoms. Has anyone gone into menopause with the only sign being missed periods. Or do the symptoms tend to come once your periods have actually stopped?

I pretty much sailed through. My periods went haywire in my mid-40s but a Mirena coil stopped them completely. I got flushes but they weren't unbearable, just like my internal thermostat had changed. I did get horrible vaginal dryness which I have ongoing treatment for, but other than that I've been fine.

I'm 52. About 9 months ago, I swopped to a different pill and my periods have stopped. No other symptoms of menopause. Frankly, my hormones have been a nightmare since puberty (very irregular periods). I can't quite believe my luck.

My sister claims she sailed through, periods just stopped etc. She obviously failed to notice she was a bitch queen from hell for over a year.

I couldn't bear the menopausal rages and they are the main reason I am on HRT. I could cope with the physical signs, but I have never experienced such anger and I hated it - and how I treated my lovely family. Patches mean I am back to my generally reasonable self.

No issues at all ... periods just slowed down, one hot flush (didn't realise what it was at the time), no mood swings ... always been over weight so no change Grin. I never had any PMT or 'period' problems either so maybe it is connected Confused. My mother didn't have any menopause side effects either.

My mum had it easy. A few hot flushes and that's about it. And her migraines stopped. I'm hoping this is genetic.

@Heliachi

I'm 58, no period for 2-3 years and few symptoms. Bit of sleep difficulties and less heat tolerance but no major problems.

I think a lot of people overdramatize menopause, frankly.

Or could it be that your subjective experience has no bearing on the realities of peri / menopause for most women?

I heard so much about my mother's menopause, a daily commentary that went on for years, that I vowed I would never, ever mention mine. TBF my mother has blown every ailment out of proportion for 8t years.

@lljkk I'm puzzled as to why you feel that a quote from the link is 'spurious'.

It's a direct quote from the report, which includes research from the BMS, WHC and more. (not my own words.)

The point you make is covered on page 4, is a graph showing rates above the expected morbidity for all age groups, from age 50.

SueSaid · 08/08/2021 10:29

It's interesting in the osteoporosis link it referred to a FRAX algorithm, a tool to assess the risk of fractures. Whether a smoker, or on steroids, sex, bmi etc is covered but hrt not mentioned. Again, I don't get it. If not being on hrt is a known and significant risk why isn't it included? Premature menopause the only thing mentioned.

I'm genuinely interested and here to learn. I sometimes think you take questioning personally Jingling when it certainly isn’t you I'm challenging, I absolutely respect your wealth of knowledge.

lljkk · 08/08/2021 10:56

Quoting out of context is Spurious when it implies that simple hip fracture was simple or main cause of death for all the 28day mortality. That isn't true, there is multi-factor correlation and causation in many, possibly majority of individual cases where hip fracture was linked with 28 day mortality.

Should not imply that hip fracture risk is reliably prevented by HRT. It's not. Hip fracture has multiple risk factors. Especially being age > 80.

Go on, Jingling. I dare you. Acknowledge ONE NEGATIVE thing about HRT risk(s) to Health. You can do this.

I started the menopause before 45 so was referred for a dexa scan. I have one every year now of my own accord. Excellent results every time at 51 without hrt. I've been told by a consultant who is the Fall lead for his hospital that the best treatment to prevent osteoporosis is exercise, running and walking being the best.

I do 16K step average a day, so I'm not too concerned and will now only test every other year.

PostMenWithACat · 08/08/2021 14:50

I had a blood test for peri menopause at 43 when periods became irregular and it seemed blindingly obvious to me. Was told it was negative. Had last period at 49! I think menopause strictly is dated from one year after the last period?

Just after I broke my ankle after a low impact fall my GP told me to start running. One on my dicky foot and two risking another fall. I thought it was a bit daft.

I'd love to walk 160000 steps a day, actually I'd love to walk 10000 a day. Rarely manage more than 4000. Work full-time and when I do go into the office I drive (wholly inaccessible location otherwise). The 4k is because I have a walk at lunchtime. Leave the house at 7.30am, back 7.30pm.
