I use YES oil based and the thing that's helped me with all my vaginal /bladder atrophy has been Estring. I couldn't tolerate vagifem or ovestin. Both made me flare. I had to be on systemic HRT first before I could have the estring fitted.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 18/08/2021 22:35

Can the vagifem be used with a mirena? Tried vagisil which didn't do much, so think I need some oestrogen, but haven't decided if I need systemic yet

SwimmingUnderwater · 18/08/2021 22:54

Sylk is good and not full of nasty chemicals. Vagifem stopped the constant awful UTIs and painful dryness. I thought I had thrush for a long time and kept using Canesten until the doctor explained what was wrong with me with great impatience as though I was stupid not to realise!

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2021 23:00

@JumpLeadsForTwo yes it can. I used Vagifem for the last few years that my Mirena was in. Mirena's now out as I no longer need it, but I am still using the Vagifem.

CointreauVersial · 18/08/2021 23:08

I can't get a prescription for an oestrogen-based formula as I recently had endometrial cancer, so I use a moisturiser called Hyalofemme, recommended by gynae doc. It works OK, but go for Vagifem if you can.

pembelimum · 18/08/2021 23:18

Watching this thread with interest. Does anyone know if there's an issue with using these gels (e.g. vagifem) whilst also taking HRT?

DramaAlpaca · 18/08/2021 23:25

@pembelimum you should be able to use both HRT and Vagifem as there is the tiniest amount of oestrogen in Vagifem, but taking HRT might mean you don't need it.

pembelimum · 18/08/2021 23:35

Thanks @DramaAlpaca I've just been prescribed HRT (oestrogen gel to be applied to upper arms and progesterone tablets). I haven't actually started taking them as the progesterone tablets have to start on day 15 of the menstrual cycle so no idea if they'll work for the dryness but in fact that's the main reason/symptom of peri menopause which is bothering me! Wondering if I should have tried creams before getting the HRT.

JumpLeadsForTwo · 19/08/2021 06:50

Thanks @DramaAlpaca. I've actually treated myself for thrush three times in the last few months and was going to talk to DH about being treated as I thought he was reinfecting me BlushI can't believe it didn't occur to me

jeffersonsam · 19/08/2021 06:57

Vaginal dryness makes so much problem in the body, so women wants to keep their vaginal wet and smooth. Applying oil in the vaginal will keep into wet and avoid problem such as itching, rashes and etc...

Sonofabiscuit · 23/08/2021 15:04

Just been to health shop they suggested omega 7 oils .
Supposed to be really good .
I'm that desperate I'll try anything

something2say · 24/08/2021 07:27

I too suddenly had strange things start happening. The Dr prescribed Ovestin and it has made things a lot better.

I also found an oil based cream on Amazon called Vulva Harmony, and that also helps.

Dignified hey?!

@Sonofabiscuit The condition is caused by loss of estrogen. The treatment is vaginal estrogen. :)

All the omegas in the world can't reverse the changes caused by loss of estrogen.

Why not talk to your GP and get the right treatment?

Sonofabiscuit · 24/08/2021 10:55

Can't get to see a Dr been trying ,paying to see a Dr privately todo with hrt .

SwimmingUnderwater · 24/08/2021 13:52

Sea buckthorn supplements are meant to be very good

IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/08/2021 14:39

Does anyone know if itching is a symptom of vaginal dryness? I have been on a low carb/low sugar diet for the past two or three months but it persists. Canesten doesn't help much. Thinking of a trip to the GP.

Yes, definitely.

GPs have to offer phone appts even if they won't do face to face @Sonofabiscuit. You don't need to be examined if you feel you have all the symptoms of VA, just describe them :)
IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/08/2021 15:24

Thank you JinglingHellsBells.

Sonofabiscuit · 24/08/2021 16:32

Im ringing daily and getting third degree from receptionist and being told it can be managed by a trip to the chemist .
I've an appointment at menopause clinic in 2 weeks (private) so trying to hang on .

I know Jingling has already answered but just to add that it's common for women to mistake the itching caused by vaginal atrophy for thrush, try treating it with Canesten, then put two and two together when it doesn't work.
IsFuzzyBeagMise · 24/08/2021 20:58

Thank you DramaAlpaca. I'll take myself off to the GP. It's not too noticeable by day, but starts off at night. I haven't seen too much about it as a symptom when I look it up.

Since when did a receptionist have the training to diagnose and prescribe/ offer treatment advice?

Seriously, you need to push back a bit on this. You don't have to say what it is you want an appt for. You can say it's confidential and you don't want to disclose.

Sonofabiscuit · 25/08/2021 08:39

I know ,you have to tell our receptionist everything before they decide .it's a nightmare .
I tried ringing this morning from 8am ,constantly engaged, took 51 attempts .got through, put on hold for 5mims then finally a person.
Can't see or speak to a Dr, the practise pharmacist is going to ring me within the next 4 hours .fingers crossed they can help

JinglingHellsBells · 25/08/2021 09:01

No, you don't! You can say it's personal. They have no right to ask confidential medical information.

What if it was a woman asking about a termination? Or someone who thought they had an STI? Or someone depressed and suicidal?
Do you think they need to tell someone on the phone those things?

You need to say it's something to discuss with the dr only.
