Aged 52'- Periods starting again after two years

So annoying.

More than two years without a period. No other symptoms, thought I'd sailed through menopause.

March of this year - full on period, sore boobs, cramps, the works.

Ultrasound scan to rule out problems - all clear.

Consultant said just one of those things, any more bleeding, don't worry, no need to explore as all nasty causes ruled out.

Another period just started, as before.

How flippin annoying.

I'm glad that everything is okay otherwise.

Yeah, that sounds a bit shit though.

My older sister would be period-free for a year then it would come back for three months, like normal and be without for another year and back again for three-four months, from 50 to 58.

Im 50 and still going strong. Bastard period.

I hope this one is just a one off, OP fingers crossed 🤞🏼

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 17/05/2021 19:55

Thanks @elp30

I was definitely concerned the first time, but the appointment was quick and very thorough.

Now I'm just fed up!

53 + and still having periods.
I can imagine how crap that must have been for you OP, I suppose you just have focus on the fact it's nothing nefarious.Cake

There has been some reports of people having a period again after menopause following their vaccine. Could that be connected for you?

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 17/05/2021 21:37

@Dogmatix34 - hmmm. Interesting - had the AZ vaccine in Feb, then first period in two years the month after.

Have you got any links?

OP posts:
SirVixofVixHall · 17/05/2021 21:38

I had read that too, re AZ, I can’t remember where, will link if I can find it.

TitsInAbsentia · 17/05/2021 22:02

I read something about short term changes due to vaccination...had to look it up because my usual cycle is one period every 3-4 months but just two weeks after second vaccination it appears I'm having a bonus period Hmm In all honesty it's not something I would have thought to report but it seems others have.

There's a big survey being conducted so you might want to add your experience here.
HPFA · 20/05/2021 22:49

Stupid me - didn't include the link!!

@Dogmatix34, interesting comment. i'm nearing 64 been fully menopausal for decades and since my vaccine i have hot flushes??
not had any of those for 10 years at least.

Okbutnotgreat · 20/05/2021 23:02

Very similar here and had to have a hysteroscopy to check it was nothing serious. Turns out I have fibroids but was told it’s possible the Vagifem and Ovestin I’ve been using regularly for the last year may have kickstarted things again. Only happened once though and nothing since.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 20/05/2021 23:03

If you go into the Coronavirus topic here on MN there is loads of info on this with many women experiencing strange symptoms to their periods after the vaccine. Those with periods are missing them for 1-2 months, they're super heavy and painful, and a fair number of women who've been through the menopause have seen theirs restarting again.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 20/05/2021 23:03

Thank you, @HPFA - I've completed it.

Will be very interesting to see the eventual results.

The day after my 2nd Pfizer, I started an extremely heavy period which lasted a full week, I had to use double protection and change on the hour, it was almost post partum levels. I’ve never had particularly heavy periods, certainly no longer than 3/4 days, and I’m easily two years post menopause. It was quite bizarre Confused

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 20/05/2021 23:51

@AGirlCalledJohnny - mine was the same.
Two years of period in one go, it seemed.

Fortunately this second one has been two days of light bleeding and seems done.

thank you @HPFA

WaverleyPirate · 21/05/2021 00:51

Same thing here. Just after first AZ vaccine.

It seems to be connected. Lots of reports of it happening.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 21/05/2021 07:15

@WaverleyPirate

Very interesting.

I went for tests after it happened as I was terrified of what post-menopausal bleeding could mean (all came back clear).

I did mentioned the possible connection to the sonographer, who laughed it off.

I have a follow up with the consultant - I think I'll make sure my thoughts are formally recorded.

I had a private scan done (as the NHS one had been unclear) and the sonographer asked me if I'd had the vaccine - said that it was giving her a lot of business.

I had a hysteroscopy yesterday and consultant gave me the all-clear - I do however have the 2nd vaccine tomorrow. I really hope I don't bleed again - even though the consultant said I wouldn't need rechecking if it happens. He said it was unlikely to be connected.

I'm getting tired of some of the reporting which suggests this is no big deal. That might be true for a younger woman who can afford to wait and see if her next period is back to normal. It's not true of a post-menopausal woman who has to go through all the checking which is so incredibly stressful.

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 21/05/2021 19:16

Completely agree, @HPFA

I was really, really scared to have painful, heavy bleeding after two years.
My GP was great but even the "it's probably nothing but we have a 'within two weeks' fast track to check this' is another reason for your mind to race.

I've had a second bleed since the first, along with PMT symptoms, but not as bad as the first.
