Anybody else 56 or older and still getting periods?

PollyPelargonium52 · 26/12/2019 08:48

Hi I am still blessed with the curse. AFter 3 years of erratic periods I had thought they finally stopped in January 2019. Then in September they came back! One normal one then one much lighter one then one with just a mere drip a day more or less lol.

This one for Xmas has been quite heavy! Nice gift from Santa lol.

Is it just me as a friend of mine knows of literally nobody who has them at this age still and she had stacks of women friends so is representative of many.

Also I recently had a 3 week migraine in the build up to my period. I am used to a few days of a migraine but nothing like that.

It isn't a full lie in a darkened room migraine but enough to totally ruin quality of life.

My son''s half sister says it is because I am still young and my body is good working order lol. I don't feel that I am sick to death of them!

They started when I was 11 after all. They are also really clockwork now. With sore breasts for up to 3 weeks. Nice.

Any thoughts out there please?

oh yes 56 here and periods still going strong (latest one started Christmas eve - really heavy, 12 of us in the house for Christmas... one toilet...) - have had no indications at all yet that "the change" would even consider showing itself, none of my female relatives have got there naturally (hysterectomies/ovaries out/cancer/death etc...) - so don't even have any idea of timescale when the doc says "look to your family for age clues"

The mean average age for menopause is 51, but that's the highest point of a wide bell curve. I know someone who was 30. My mother was 59 (!)

Apparently, late MP is linked with longevity and good health in general. There is a slight increase in the risk of one or two types of cancer, but it is balanced out by a lower risk of other things like brittle bones.

Alyic · 26/12/2019 09:04

I was 46 they just stopped dead, the lady who used to babysit for me was still having them in her sixties.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 26/12/2019 09:24

Still going at nearly 59... I think in my case, not helped by being a porker, which apparently increases oestrogen and therefore delaying it.

BeyondMyWits · 26/12/2019 10:58

haha - I am most definitely fat and unfortunately could not be described as in good health, so appears I may be a bit of an outlier... usually am...

Dozer · 26/12/2019 10:59

My mum had gaps/heavy bleeding and it turned out to be endometrial cancer. GPs under refer for testing.

Dozer · 26/12/2019 11:00

But she and her sisters had periods in late 50s.

PollyPelargonium52 · 26/12/2019 11:51

Wow more replies than I expected! I am a stone ovverweight maybe.

Mine is only heavy now and again.

My mum was 56 when hers stopped so I am hoping fate will be kind soon.

I do not feel healthy having them at this age as I always feel out of sorts with migraines/sore breasts etc.

I take iron but I feel tired in the winter. Perhaps that is normal with the SAD season.

Guess we are just oddablls eh lol.

What I really cannot understand is for 3 years they were spread out 3 weekly/5 weekly/7 weekly and now this year regular as can be.

Mine were a bit like that for a while Polly. Gaps are now getting bigger, so hopefully this is the downhill run. Am vair vair bored of it all now.

Thehagonthehillwithtinsel · 26/12/2019 15:59

59 and mine only recently slowed but not stopped completely.Much better than the tenalady flooding I was having last year!

NK346f2849X127d8bca260 · 27/12/2019 00:48

polly My last one was a couple of months before i was 52 but the last year they were every 28 days, i had never been regular before that they were anything between 21-35 days, seemed most weird.

PollyPelargonium52 · 27/12/2019 08:33

It would seem we are part of a rather elusive tribe lol.

I know iron supplements regulate a cycle and I do take that but that is because I don't eat much meat and otherwise every April I am a wreck.

For me the worst thing is joint ache.

Have upped my supplements and will start aqua aerobics in the new year. Assuming I feel comfortable wearing a tampon or Beppy tampon in the pool. It is gentle on the joints.

I'm hoping for not many more. Am 52 but am so over all this unpredictable bleeding/pms/sore boobs - hate it.

PollyPelargonium52 · 28/12/2019 12:12

Usually my B complex vits stop the sore boobs but not at the moment.

Bloody hell!!! pardon the pun

56? 59?? I'm 51 and thought maybe another couple of years!

Oh well, at least my mooncup will pay for itself.

borntobequiet · 28/12/2019 15:54

I’m in my 60s and still have a cycle. Asked for a hysterectomy but was given a Mirena for the very heavy bleeding - “there’s nothing wrong with you that would warrant a hysterectomy”. Despite the Mirena I still have spotting every 2-3 months. I also use oestrogen gel. I still get PMT, get weepy and have cramps (cramps worsened with the coil).
I’m a reasonable weight, fit and generally healthy, still working part time.

JungtheForeman · 28/12/2019 16:29

I had a Mirena coil for years but was still getting intermittent bleeding (every 4-6 months). I was convinced I must have gone through the menopause and couldn't understand why I was still bleeding occasionally. Spoke to the GP who suggested having the Mirena taken out to get an idea of what was going on. This happened in September. Since then, I've had regular, very very heavy periods in a 27-29 day cycle. I feel really resentful as I thought I was done with it!
My mum's periods stopped at 54, and my sisters' in mid-late fifties. There seems to be no sign of mine abating and it's certainly not making me feel youthful!

JungtheForeman · 28/12/2019 16:29

I'm nearly 57, btw!

lazymum99 · 31/12/2019 10:14

59 here. And 2 months short of a year without. I also had mirena removed thinking I had finished. That was 3 years ago!
It seems to run in my family. All mid to late 50s.

lilgreen · 31/12/2019 10:21

Crikey I had no idea they could go on that long but I guess it makes sense with the age range for starting being 9-18! I’m nearly 49 and still getting them but often skip one.

lilgreen · 31/12/2019 10:21

I think my DM was 51.

Missingthesea · 31/12/2019 10:35

I was 60 and I feel so sorry for borntobequiet Flowers

It would appear mother nature has a rather warped sense of humour!
