Menopause over and done with - 3 years ago, I thought. This week, blood spotting, today looks like a proper period. Will have to go to the docs, won't I? Or is this something that can sometimes happen. Not happy, and to be honest, a bit scared.

Sorry, Op, but you've already said you know you need to go the doctor as a matter of urgency here. Post menopausal bleeding should be investigated, although the reasons are usually benign, it is a red flag (sorry, no pun intended) for cell changes that could lead to malignancy.
Please get this checked out ASAP.

You will be referred for a scan initially within 2 weeks.

Try not to worry. If you are under 50 then it's more likely it will be hormonal - a possible surge.

But the 'rule' is any bleeding after 12 months ought to be investigated.

Do expect to be referred for Gynae appointment, usually scan and maybe a D&C type procedure, which will be a nuisance and a bit stressful for you, but hopefully will give you the reassurance you need that there is nothing serious going on.

The D&C procedure is rarely done now- you might have a hysteroscopy which is a procedure that can be done as a 20 minute out patient appt. This is usually offered if a scan shows anything that's unusual or the images aren't clear enough to be sure.

Thanks Polly for bringing my Gynae knowledge up to date, couldn't think of what had replaced the D&C, which was why I added 'type procedure', so a hysteroscopy makes sense- have a look and maybe biopsy if necessary?
How did you get on at the GP's, OP? Hope you are feeling a bit more reassured?

I think it's a case of better techniques now! The old D&Cs were quite brutal in some ways- scraping all the lining out just to see what was there. With really good ultrasound nowadays they can see so much beforehand and then look with a scope if necessary and even remove polyps etc at the same time.

I'm having similar. No period for five years. This weekend I seem to have bled slightly. It's hard to tell as it is so slight - seems like at the very tail end of a period and only when I wipe. Also have a bit of discharge.

You need to go ,yes. Severe vaginal atrophy can cause bleeding, as can benign polyps.

I've had this happen twice now whilst on hrt, had to stop the hrt and nothing untoward has been found. Good luck.

Odd bleeding when on HRT is very different from bleeding after 5 years (presumably when not on HRT.)

The rule is any bleeding after 12 months of no periods should be investigated pronto- within 2 weeks.

You will have a scan and possibly a hysteroscopy.

Hello, all - just a quick catch up! As said on here, I've had a scan, and an internal (yuk) and am waiting for results. As it's now 2 weeks since that was done, I've called the hospital. The number quoted on web site was the wrong no, but a lovely lady tried to help and gave me another no. Not that either - need the rapid response team(!) but - you might not get a reply from them as the secretary is on holiday. OK. Rang that no, call timed out. So, I know nothing, and am beginning to feel hysterical. Not helped by the fact I have to have a tooth out this afternoon. So, apart from updating you, I've come here for a bit of sympathy!

Try not to worry. (BTW was the scan over your tummy? because they usually do an internal scan-TVS- transvaginal scan- and they use something that resembles a small dildo and they get a really good picture.)
Rest assured that if anything untoward had been found, you'd have known pretty quickly.
Sounds as if all is fine and they are just taking their time letting you know.
Bit odd though that you have to phone- if your GP referred you then they ought to send the results back to them and the GP will follow up with you via a phone call of appt.

(I have scans privately so the radiologist tells me there and then what he's seen and the written report goes back to my consultant who requests the scan though I already know what the outcome is.)

I'm afraid I've done nothing about mine.

Got overtaken by a recall after a mammogram. Had a biopsy and am booked in for a lumpectomy on 4 March and will have a 3 week course of radiotherapy afterwards.

I haven't had any bleeding but have been itchy. Realised I've been using the heated seat in my car and wonder if that has given me thrush. I wasn't even sure I had had bleeding to be honest. It was so faint.

I know I should get it checked though.

It's not 'normal' procedure and if- though it won't be!- bad news, they'd not want to give you the news by phone, they would write to your GP who'd call you in. or the consultant would ask you to come and see them.
