Can your periods stop 'just like that?'

lovemydog · 11/11/2010 21:33

Hi -I shall be 50 next week . . . Apart from when I had the kids, my periods were regular as clockwork. I have now not had a period since July. Is this it? So quick and easy? I have occasionally woken up drenched in sweat! - but apart from that no sign of anything.

think it can be very different for everyone. I would go to the doctor now or nurse just for information.

purplepeony · 12/11/2010 14:26

Ha! You are jumping the gun a bit- you have to have had no periods for 2 years to be considered menopausal under the age of 50.

As it is, you have missed 4 at most.
Perfectly normal but no good thinking you are though it- sorry. Lots of my freids go 6 months or more before another few come along, then a gap, then some more.
I missed my first at 51 and a half, then they came back and stopped at 53.5, then I have had 3 more in the past 18 months ( now aged 55).
They can stop suddenly but i think you may well find you have a visitor before long.
No need to see dr- you aren't ill.

starfishmummy · 12/11/2010 14:46

Mine got further apart for a while and then stopped. No nasty symptoms. Hooray.
Of course you have ruled out being pregnant?

coatgate · 12/11/2010 14:49

I missed for a few months, then started them again, regular, and now getting further and further apart. I too was told that you have to go for 2 years without to be classed as through it. I have been lucky so far with no real flushes. But I suppose there is time.

Rivi - Why would the OP need to see a doctor or nurse?

purplepeony · 12/11/2010 16:13

My flushes only started once I thought they had stopped for good at 53.5.

lovemydog · 12/11/2010 18:13

Oh, all perfectly normal then. I won't bother the doctor and definitely not pregnant! Thanks for your experiences.

I'm a bit late to this, but thought I'd add my two cents worth, just in case it's useful.

The menopause seems to affect women differently - from practically no symptoms to horrendous ones. In my case, my periods had been very regular, but I had a 35-day cycle and I'm not sure whether that was relevant at all. The first real sign that I was menopausal was the year I had only three periods, and then they stopped. I did have some hot flushes, mostly night sweats, and no noticeable mood swings.

At the time it became obvious to me that I was approaching the menopause, I had visited my GP for something unrelated but asked if he had any advice - I was thinking maybe I should watch my diet or take supplements. He referred me to the practice nurse who could only offer pamphlets produced by HRT companies. I probably would have been better off going to Holland & Barrett!

Whatever you do, don't listen to scare stories about the menopause. Just about the only inconvience I experienced was that the odour of my underarm perspiration changed, and was a bit problematic for quite a while.

One Americanism I do like is "hot flashes" instead of "hot flushes", because although some women do experience reddening of the face and even facial sweating, not everyone does. There was one occasion when I was putting on makeup, so looking at myself in the mirror, when experiencing a hot flush/flash and I didn't notice any difference.

On the other hand, some women do experience very problematic symptoms because their hormone levels could go up-and-down like the proverbial see-saw. In those circumstances, any sensible GP should offer HRT, at least as a temporary measure, in order to stabilise those hormonal swings.

Anyway, that's my story, to add to other women's experiences.

lovemydog · 10/01/2011 20:32

Pah! Back with a vengeance this morning! Wonder if the next one will be in another 6 months? no symptoms apart from the odd night sweat.

I am 52. Mine seem to have just stopped. Have some hot flushes, mood swings but biggest problem is insomnia.

maltesers · 22/01/2011 19:48

My GP ways some women just stop periods , some women have fewer periods , spaced well apart, and some continue to have them more regularly but very light etc.
As for me i am 52 and i have only had one period since last February and have the coil . I get very hot at times in the day or night, but not too awful really.

jutt2010 · 02/02/2011 00:45

i'm 39 and have always been on time with my periods except for when iv had my children. i'v been sterilised had it done 14yrs since my lst period was 22nd december and not had one since i taken a pregnancy test and it came back negitive could i be going through the menopause ? i'm so worried.

OpheliaBumps · 02/02/2011 13:36

Hi jutt, you are quite young for the menopause, but it is possible.

I suggest you make an appointment with your doctor and ask their advice. If it is the menopause they can test your hormone levels and confirm this.

maltesers · 15/02/2011 09:14

Yes is the answer, or you have half the amount of periods for a couple of years, or you have some for a few months then there is a big gap , then a few more.
At least this is what my GP said.
I have had one since last Feb. . . .am 52 so am in the Menopause.

Alissajoy · 17/03/2018 10:28

I'm 46 been in peri menopause for at least 1.5 years. Now for 3 months I haven't gotten my period would you say I'm menopausal, and there's no chance of being pregnant either

ParisUSM · 17/03/2018 10:56

Allisajoy, no not menopausal yet - you have to go a full year. I had a 3 month gap a year and a half ago, and another about a year ago but went on to have many more periods with gaps now and again and am still peri.

I wish I had kept the link but I found research that said on average you have 1.5 - 2 years to go from the first 90 day gap until Final Menstrual Period. Good news is that you're in the final phase now :)

Keep using contraception for now!

Alissajoy · 17/03/2018 12:21

Thanks that helps alot

ParisUSM · 17/03/2018 12:39

If anyone's interested, this is the research I was talking about - a lot of interesting stuff here

www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3232023/

I personally hadn't noticed this bit before

"Onset of the late transition is best characterized by an episode of 60 or more days of amenorrhea, which occurs on average two years before the FMP"

which sounds good to me because I had my first 60 day gap 2 years ago #prays

PollyPerky · 17/03/2018 13:13

That's interesting. I think mine was less than 2 years. More like 12-18 months.

However.....all the symptoms of peri do not necessarily go away once periods stop; far from it for lots of us.

Some women still have flushes in their 80s and beyond.

My own symptoms only started once my final period had happened.

Valerie1944 · 27/03/2018 15:00

I’m 52 years old and I’m late on my period by 2 weeks I’m definitely not pregnant what else could be making me late I’ve never been late

Shelley1066 · 12/08/2018 15:39

Think I am in similar situation. I do have 4 children but have had 3 miscarriages also, Always been regular every 26 days or so. Last one in July and now nothing, I am 51. Was actually quite excited. really thought I might be pregnant one last time but negative tests. I have no symptoms and they appear to have just stopped - literally. I can relate.

QueenoftheNights · 12/08/2018 19:05

You don't know if they have 'literally stopped just like that'. You've missed one - last one July? Now mid August? It will be late. Periods stop and start for months or years.

Shelley1066 · 12/08/2018 19:28

Will wait with baited breath. Had my last miscarriage over 8yrs ago and never went back on the pill - hubby was aware I hasten to add. Bummer when you think you might be pregnant and then too old to have another baby all in the space of an afternoon! More that I have never been a week late before and not been pregnant. I had everything crossed when I took the test. It has been interesting to read about other peoples experiences. I read this morning however that menopause can happen in one of 3 ways and one of them was that your periods just stop. I suppose the positive way to look at it is that if this is it for me, there has been no drama attached to it.

QueenoftheNights · 12/08/2018 20:03

All women's menopause starts with a missed period. (How else can it happen? :)) At 51, it's expected!
When you go for a whole 12 months with no period, that's when you are usually not going to have any more. The average age of menopause is 51. The range is from around 45 to 55. I'm sorry for your previous losses.

Shelley1066 · 12/08/2018 20:40

I guess it was just naivity. Never really thought about it before as no prior symptoms. Just assumed a missed period meant I was pregnant. Guess not to be - never joined a chat site like this before - very therapeutic! xx

NickyNora · 12/08/2018 22:50

I missed a period for the first time in my life in May 2017. June, July & August were bit longer cycles. My last period was in August.

I was 43.

Then the symptons started!
