With-baby meet-up in Brighton / Hove

Hi everyone.

I'm moving to Brighton (well Hove!) with my DP and 15mo DS next month, and I'd love to meet some other parents.

I went to a Brighton meet-up recently, and really enjoyed it, I'm looking forward to the next one. (And I'll make sure I can stay out a little later next time!) But, I thought it'd be nice to also do something with the little ones.

I have no idea what though - beach / park etc? I don't know the area very well.

If it was a pub they'd have to be VERY child-friendly - DS is at the stage that he wants to be toddling around most of the time, and he wants to tough everything! Does one exist I wonder? (The days of sitting calmly in the corner of nice pubs are over for a long while I suspect)

I though maybe sometime in May, or maybe the weekend of 24/25th April?

What do you reckon?

Let us know if you're up for it

waves to shortandsweet

That sounds doable for us, thank you for the bus information; for some reason the site will not load on my lappy and I always get confused as to where I am on maps

alle01 · 11/04/2010 11:03

thank for the info, lowrib, but i can't really go very far, i am really tired and getting braxtons now, and it is any time now, so i don't want to be more than 15 min away from dh just in case,... hove seems a bit far, went yesterday with husband to george st for a bit of shopping and a coffee, i went by car and was out of the house for less than 3 hours, and i could not get home fast enough to lay down,...
you're right, i go to the loo every 3 seconds and a half, day and night, and i am getting bruises from the kicks, but only on one side, i also have very bad reflex, so sleeping is difficult, doesn't help me to be relaxed during the day,... well, enough moanning

flootshoot · 11/04/2010 18:52

aale01 sound like we'll have to wait until you LO is born before we all meet. Would be great to see you after the event though!

I remember it well... it all fades into the past when you have your new -set- -of- -challenges- bundle of joy.

RnB · 11/04/2010 18:57

Hi ladies,

Would love to join you too, but may be giving birth around then! Will keep looking at the thread though. I live in Hove and have 2 older boys (7&8) and expecting dc3 at the end of May

flootshoot · 11/04/2010 18:57

alle01

Can't type today. Fecked up the crossing out as well.

I'll get me coat

lowrib · 12/04/2010 22:48

Hiya shortandsweet2 and RnB

RnB let us know nearer the time, if you feel up to it, I'd be very happy to meet you in Hove and travel with you to the park - if it makes it any easier for you?

alle01 it looks like we'll have to make the next one somewhere easy for you to get to with a very little one then!

It's funny how quickly you forget these things. It's only a year and a bit since I was as pregnant as the two of you, but it's hard now to remember exactly what I could do and what was just too much.

Looks like it's Sat 24th April then.

Just checking - is everyone happy with meeting at the cafe / playpark in Dyke Rd park?

What do you reckon - cafe or picnic?

Does early afternoon suit?

OP posts:
alle01 · 13/04/2010 09:53

oh, lowrib, the answer is simple, i can do literally nothing, can't be very far from dh either, in case of imminent birth.

hopefully, i'll be able to move around soon after birth.peacehaven has a lovely park with toys for toddlers and lovely bfeeding friendly cafe, something to think about...

spotofcheerfulness · 13/04/2010 19:20

Me n T'll be there

Zoidberg · 13/04/2010 19:47

24th in Dyke Park is fine for us, we can drive over. DD naps in the afternoon, times vary, so will have to play that by ear a bit, unless people can do 10.30ish.

lowrib · 13/04/2010 20:56

Hiya spot and Zoidberg

I could do 10.30ish.

What do the rest of you reckon? Does anyone have any strong feelings about morning or afternoon?

I can't plan anything around DS's naps at the moment. He used to nap at around midday, but he's stuck on random! All I can say now is he's likely sleep sometime between 11.30 and 4.

alle01 that's simple yes, but a shame! Here's to the next time. What's the park in Peacehaven called BTW?

OP posts:
flootshoot · 13/04/2010 21:30

10.30ish sounds fine to me. Actually I prefer mornings because DS tends to nap in the buggy if we go for a decent walk after breakfast - it'll take me an hour or so to walk there so he'll be bright and breezy when we arrive. Sounds like a plan!

alle01 · 14/04/2010 17:54

the park in peacehaven is called the dell, it is near a bus stop for number 12, and close by there is a free car park, but usually enough in the street, free as well, for those who drive...

lowrib · 19/04/2010 09:10

Cheers alle01 I'll have a look at it. This thread is great for me as a Brighton newbie, I'm learning loads of practical stuff about the area.

I was out and about with DS and some friends at Brighton beach yesterday, it was lovely. I was really impressed with the playpark down at the beachfront. DS loved it, we had a great day - despite having to spend much of it trying to teach DS that pebbles are not food! He's going to have to learn this one pretty quickly I think!

Zoidberg · 19/04/2010 21:10

There's a playground at Hove Lagoon on the seafront too, the other end from Brighton, alongside Heather Mills' vegan cafe (not been to the cafe myself). And a nice quiet little park with playground on Wish Road (called Aldrington Rec but known as Wish Park), which runs between seafront and Church Road, about 20mins+ walk from Hove station.

Looking forward to meeting you all on Saturday, we'll recognise each other won't we, or shall we wear red carnations .

mumoverseas · 20/04/2010 12:55

Hi all, I'm an honoury attendee at the Brighton meet ups on a very ad hoc basis. I live in Saudi most of the year but have a UK base in Crawley so have gatecrashed a few times

My youngest two are DD who is 3 1/2 years and DS who is 14 months and I'd love to attend a meet-up with little ones over the summer.

I hope you all have a lovely time on Saturday

flootshoot · 20/04/2010 18:54

Hove Lagoon is great and near me too (hint for next time....) - is it definitely 10.30 at Dyke Park then?

lowrib · 21/04/2010 23:04

Hiya flootshoot 10.30 at Dyke Park seemed to suit people best, is it still OK for you?
Hove Lagoon looks nice BTW

Hiya mumoverseas it'd lovely to meet you. When are you next in town?

Zoidberg - how will we know each other?! good point! When I went on the MN without-children meet up it was in a restaurant so I just said to the waiter "I'm here to meet some women I've never met before" and somehow he knew exactly who I meant.
How about you look for me? I'll make sure I'm there a bit early and I'm quite easy to find - what do you think?
I have a hairband thing I like wearing - it's lots of colours, mainly reds and pinks, and I have long fair hair. My DS is 16 months and has blond curly hair and we have a black pushchair with silver bits.

Do you all fancy meeting in the cafe or the playpark? (They're right next to each other, so it's really easy to go to both, no matter where we meet first).

CrosswordGeek · 22/04/2010 11:09

comes and posts with mild trepidation

I'm going to be in the Brighton area this weekend, and will probably have nothing to do on Saturday daytime. Would love to possibly come along, but I'm scared.

DD is 7 months old and likes to squeal.

lowrib · 22/04/2010 15:18

CrosswordGeek it would be lovely to meet you and DD, please don't be scared!

None of us will know each other. I'm not scary I promise!

OP posts:
CrosswordGeek · 22/04/2010 15:52

I'm a proper paranoid wreck, will try though...
Is there a proper time and place yet?

I'm going up to Haywards Heath tomorrow, so wil be getting the train down from there.

Brighton or Hove, actually?

flootshoot · 22/04/2010 18:52

Crosswordgeek, I'm a bit nervous too actually but we'll be fine. If you're getting the train it's probably best to come into Brighton, although Dyke Road's a bit of a hill. Come out of the station, turn right and then right again up a steep hill, walk to the seven dials roundbout and up Dyke road, away from the town. Or the number 27 bus goes from Brighton station up Dyke Road too.

I'm ridiculously short with hair like this ([shock - wasn't intended to turn out quite like that!!)and DS is 13 months, very blond and we have a bright blue pushchair. Come along!

lowrib · 22/04/2010 18:53

It's 10.30am in Dyke Park, Hove actually

But I'm not sure if people want to meet in the playpark or the cafe - what do you think?

OP posts:
Zoidberg · 22/04/2010 19:16

Cool, I will recognise you guys! Let's meet in the play area as it's easier on whoever is there first / less pressure for people if they're running late as the babes already there can play.

I will try my best to be on time, DD's naps are a bit all over the place this week but the trend is earlier so should not be a prob for us.

Will be lovely to meet you all I'm sure

lowrib · 22/04/2010 23:20

That makes a lot of sense zoidberg, the playpark it is then!

I'm really looking forward to this, if everyone comes then I think we have

flootshoot + DS 13m
spotofcheerfulness + DS 16m?
R&B + DS 7y + DS 8y + bump!
SirBoobAlot + DS 5m
Zoidberg & DD 12m
crosswordgeek + DD 7m
lowrib + DS 16m

Please shout if I've missed you?!

Happy nearly birthday to baby Zoidberg BTW!
