Picnic in Greenwich Park - Tuesday August 2nd

Hello all - so, who's coming to the First Annual Summer Picnic in the Park? I thought somewhere near the Bandstand would be a good meeting point - near to the tea rooms too!

Hopefully the date will suit you - please come, bring a rug (or even a chair - Beachy that means you!!), a picnic, your kids, the sunshine.

Oooh, perhaps I could make this. I'm not entirely sure where the bandstand is, but then I rarely walk up the hill. Is there shade there? I am a delicate, celtic flower you know and I can't take the harsh British sunshine. There is a lovely leafy area near the herb garden which is not only at the bottom of the hill, but also has lovely dappled sunlight and the sound of wind through the trees. [hint][hint] Mind you, if people are driving it is much easier to park at the top isn't it?

Yes mummylonglegs, and now that I think about it the drivers can always walk down the hill, can't they? Probably do them good to stretch their legs after being cooped up in the car.

Have you thought of meeting in the secret garden behind the observatory? It is enclosed by shurbs and trees, so a good barrier to help contain runaway toddlers. There is shade too - and it is near the public loos.

I don't mind where we meet - we'll go with the majority shall we? For those of you getting off buses near the Maritime museum it would definitely be easier to meet near the bottom of the hill but we will need to be near loos - are there any down there? My children are 3 and 6 so won't mind walking back up the hill if I promise ice-creams when we get there!!!

If you have a look at this map KBear, there are public loos on the road that runs from St Mary's gate towards Romney Road. I would say 4 or 5 mins walk from the area beside the herb garden.

I was thinking about that secret garden tigermoth, especially because I don't think dogs are allowed in there. The path can be a little tricky to find iirc, or maybe that's just me. The good thing is that it's below the observatory but higher than the low part of the park so every walks about the same amount.

Is the secret garden so secret that it's not on the map or am I losing it? Is it near Flamsteed House?

Can I just make the point that as older children will be coming, not just toddlers and babies, it might be better to be somewhere where the odd game of football won't cause offence to the gardeners!

What does everyone else think?

Yes, good point KBear, I have a feeling that ball games wouldn't be allowed there, I can't tell you exactly where it is as I only ever seem to find it by accident, but it's on one of the paths North of the observatory, it's sort of on the side of the hill below the observatory, approximately where Flamsteed House is. But there would be plenty of room by the herb garden.

Let's wait and see what other people think and we'll decide nearer the time.

That's why I suggested near the bandstand - lots of big trees, lots of space, it's flat, perfect for bike riding and footie or rounders. I do understand the walking up the hill part but someone is going to have to walk up the hill either on the way or the way home so you can't please 'em all! I personally don't want to be somewhere where I have to say to the kids "Don't trample the flowerbeds with your football - you're not here to enjoy yourselves!!!". haha

Let's see how it pans out shall we. (and you mummylonglegs should be able to walk uphill really fast having such long legs).

Hello ladies... You've got quite the debate doing on with the locale!! I don't care - Blackheath gate or down the hill in Greenwich - doesn't matter to me. (Ds turned 7 months old today - how is that possible????)

Great idea! Let's meet smack in the middle of the hill then we can ALL get some exercise. Don't know if there's a good place for toddlers on the hill however - I've only ever been at the very top or the very bottom and haven't ventured to climb and/or descend the hill...

Right, shall we make a decision to have this one at the bottom of the hill to suit those at the bottom and next time we will meet at the top for coffee and luvly cakes in the pavillion.

All those in favour say aye......

(and suggest a meeting point that doesn't include formal gardens so the bigger children can ride bikes and play footie if they want without the parky chasing us off!).
