Am very jealous ... did do Spanish A Level (and passed it) but all I can remember is reading 16th Century novels and using cheat notes as it made no sense to me AT ALL ... We definitely did not do enough conversation ...

Have enjoyed reading this though and have surprised myself as I understand quite a bit ...

Here's a funny ...

When we were on a family holiday in Spain once a waiter asked my brother if he wanted anything else ...
My brother (who had just started learning Spanish at the time) looked at him and said, "Si, burro!" , meaning that he wanted butter for his bread! I nearly w**d my pants with laughing as I told him that he had called the waiter a donkey!

lucy123 · 11/03/2003 08:12

Ghosty - you'd be amazed at how it all comes back when you have to speak it every day. I did French at school and it's been a great help.

I've made some howlers myself though - fizzy pop in Spanish is gaseosa, and you use it when you mean lemonade (according to a strange woman I met). But once in a bar I asked for a "gasoleo" (diesel). Luckily he guessed what I meant.

Ghosty · 11/03/2003 08:39

Lucy123 ... I have just read your last sentence to zebra and thought for a laugh that I would try to translate it ... so here goes ...
The spanish use "vosotros" (and use ustedes when it is informal) aswell. I have an argentinian friend and he thinks I speak like a woman from the 19th century. But the differences are like the differences between british English and american English - gas, pants etc.
Is that right? I wasn't sure about the bit in brackets ... what does "en lugar" mean?

lucy123 · 11/03/2003 08:55

pretty good! The bit in brackets was not quite right - the Spanish use "vosotros" in place of ustedes when it is informal (zebra had referred to us using ustedes, which is the formal form in Spain as I'm sure you remember). Lugar is place.

I wouldn't try to learn too much from me though, my Spanish still has a long way to go. But if your local newsagents sells Spanish newspapers, try buying one when you have a bit of time one day and see how much you can understand. I did that when my Spanish was still at beginner level and it's very gratifying - you'll surprise yourself!

Ghosty · 11/03/2003 09:43

Cheers Lucy123 ... will go and pat myself on the back

SoupDragon · 11/03/2003 09:55

I'm impressed! My Spanish is limited to the very little I remember from one year at school and what I've picked up from Dora the Explorer PIL are moving to Spain this year.

bayleaf · 11/03/2003 11:09

Did half a Spanish degee ( ie French and Spanish - not that I left it half way through)and considering that I can barely remember a word to speak am amazed that I can understand the thread - but I can - is amazing how different passive and active language usage can be - but then I suppose we see that when our dds/dss are learing to speak don't we ?

whymummy · 11/03/2003 14:13

ive known english people in spain to order polla(mens second brain)instead of pollo(chicken)!!when i first came to england i told a shopkeeper that i was constipated(costipada in spanish is having a cold)no wonder he looked at me in a funny way i also couldn`t pronounce south woodford so i used to get a travel card to go to the next stop and back!!

Well, I'm a Yank living in Britain, so going to live in Spain would be double-culture shock as it's Mexican culture I know, Mexican spanish i speak, not true Castellano.... I struggle with vosotros; can understand it, but very difficult to say.

lucy123 · 11/03/2003 15:15

yes, whymummy - how do you ask where the eggs are in a Spanish supermarket? I always think they'll laugh if I say "donde estan los huevos?" (as apparantly huevos are also balls). Am I being silly?

Muchos besos a todas.
