Need advice where to look for houses in the area, where are the best places and best schools etc.

What are the playgroups etc. like ?

Any advice appreciated.

Moving within the next 2 months due to dh job promotion.

Hi, thanks all for you information.

I think the Forest is out of the question, no offence taken, I was a Forest girl myself in the past.

Its just too far, dh doesn't want to caught up in the traffic and wants to cut down on some mileage. He would like the forest but I think it is too far, he is starting a new stressful job !!

I still don't know what to think we need to make our minds up quickly, we like the old 1930s style and big gardens, but don't really want to be in the city centre.

Churchdown village seemed really nice but not too many properties and a bit pricey. Longlevens seemed okay, I read the report on Elmbridge school and was a bit concerned for the infants.

We drove through Hucclecote, but it seemed to be a long busy main road, with no actual centre or feel to it.

Didn't get to Brockworth ? What is that actually like ?

maybe worth renting for a while to get a feel for the area and find your feet?

emkana · 28/05/2007 20:55

Hucclecote has a good community, even though it might not appear so when first looking at it.

What is your budget for a house?

property looks lovely and is in a great road, the nicest road in Hucclecote IMO

emkana · 28/05/2007 20:55

I'm not keen on Brockworth personally

emkana · 28/05/2007 20:58

B*er, that link didn't work

Have a search under Hucclecote on www.parkersproperties.co.uk/, there's a couple of nice houses on there, really lovely. the one I meant in on for £ 311950.

DontCallMeBaby · 28/05/2007 21:10

I've pointed my mate who lives in Brockworth at this thread, she's been meaning to post more on MN, she can tell you what she thinks. She's only been there since about August last year, so her view should be quite fresh. Handy for the cheese rolling, if you want to see people fling themselves down a muddy hill (nutters).

poppy101 · 28/05/2007 21:36

Our budget isn't that great, I am afraid, we can go up to £240k at a push.

There is a lovely Georgian semi in that price range in Hucclecote, if you look at that web page, in the same lovely road.

bubblerock · 29/05/2007 10:12

I lived in Brockworth and it was fine growing up, lots of good hill walks close by, good bus links to Cheltenham and Gloucester, local shops, library, pretty church. It's changed since I left as they have built on the old airfield, I haven't seen it so don't know what that's like. The cheese roll is mental!! lol

I prefer that side of town to the quedgeley side because of the roads. Cole avenue and Bristol road get gridlocked at rush hour. Brockworth/Hucclecote/Shurdington are very easy to get to from the M5 - just hop off at Junction 11a. Also great for shopping at Cribbs or Merry Hill.

MrsJetson · 29/05/2007 10:20

Bubble - didn't know you were a Glos girl!!! That's where we live when we're back.

Completely agree re Cheltenham lovely lovely lovely especially, as was mentioned the Suffolks, Montpellier, Tivoli etc ... good schools too.

Can't help out on Gloucester way, but really you can't go wrong in Gloucestershire - good place to be. Some very very beautiful villages around.

I agree with renting first in order for you to get a feel for the area.

Good luck.

bubblerock · 29/05/2007 10:28

Yup, born and bred - now trying to blend in oop North

Hayls · 29/05/2007 10:30

Personally I'd go for Abbeydale/ Abbeymead (where I live - Abbeymead is newer so the houses are bit smaller though) but also lovely are Hucclecote, parts of Churchdown, parts of Longlevens,Painswick or Barnwood if you've your heart set on Gloucester rather than cheltenham (lots of dodgy areas in Cheltenham as well as really lovely-i.e. expensive- areas but the shops are far better than Glos)Let me know if you need to know anything else- not at school age yet but the playgroup my dd goes to is good and the school we have in mind has a great reputation. Right then, £240k in my neck of the woods:
www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-7606455.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy
Which is a bit mediocre really (it's not that brilliant a spot either, that road)

An extra £10k in Abbeymead:
www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-7296969.rsp?pa_n=1&tr_t=buy
There are plenty for £240k but I had to link to this one as it has the most extraordinary number of photos, the estate agent has taken a picture of EVERYTHING!

Or brand spanking new in Brockworth:
www.rightmove.co.uk/viewdetails-13817050.rsp?pa_n=2&tr_t=buy

Sigh, I really shouldn't do this sort of thing - I love where I live, and don't want to move because of nursery and then school next year, but I want a bigger, detached house and just can't afford it!

poppy101 · 29/05/2007 11:58

Thanks all, have now resorted to buying a large street map of the Gloucester and village area. Going to sit down a highlight all the areas that are suitable. Areas that mums have mentioned.

Will probably get back to you again, with other opinions. Thanks

[tbh i would avoid Bockworth unless you know the area really well and can cherry pick where you want to live- I have 'insider' knowledge]

emkana · 29/05/2007 15:31

Hayls - which playgroup does your dd go to, and which school are you thinking of?

emkana · 29/05/2007 15:32

I hope you don't mind me being nosy, just give me first letters if you like, it's just because I'm wondering whether I might know you...

Hayls · 29/05/2007 15:48

ooer, do you think so? dd goes to AU5? Also planning on going to HP?

emkana · 29/05/2007 15:49

Ha! Dd2 goes to AU5, but will go to D in Sep...

Hayls · 29/05/2007 15:52

lol, I get you!! dd starts school next September

emkana · 29/05/2007 15:54

Well next time I go to pick up dd2 from playgroup I might mutter words like "fanjo" and "parp" under my breath...

Hayls · 29/05/2007 15:56

LOL, will be listening out very carefully!

bubblerock · 29/05/2007 17:27

My stepkids live in Abbeymead, their siblings go to the brightly coloured infant/junior school not sure what it's called though. I learnt to drive there(along with most of Gloucester) - most parts are nice (Is Coney Hill still rough?) , I've just never liked newer houses.

I agree with Hayls about parts of Brockworth being a bit rough (mainly the streets named after rivers, although they're not too bad really), but I think with your budget you'll be pretty safe. Just check with us before you buy

Hayls · 30/05/2007 11:39

[Just a thought emkana but if you work out who I am - and I don't think it's too difficult - please don't 'out' me to anyone. I'm sure you wouldn't anyway but just wanted to check! Have several close friends who use same playgroup and wouldn't really want to be discovered on here! )
