Vegetarian / pescatarian low(ish) carb?

FuckertyBoo · 09/03/2019 10:53

I’m planning to start this on Monday. Nothing drastic; I’ll still eat a piece or two of fruit a day and maybe include some pulses.

Would anyone like to join me?

I could stand to lose a bit of weight, but again, nothing major. It’s more about feeling less bloated and generally flabby and crap.

Would love some company along the way Smile.

Hi @FuckertyBoo This is exactly what I'm planning although I'm not sure how long I'll last! My normal way of eating is to have a lot of snacks (cakes, crisps) and always a desert in the evening. Diets where I've been successful have been where I've calorie counted by reducing portions and buying reduced calorie versions of treats.

I'm concerned as to the size of my stomach and wondered if reducing carbs would be a better way of eating to reduce this.

I've bought some reduced carb bread so I can have my breakfast toast with peanut butter , then plan soup for lunch, possibly a little salad with beans/cheese/tuna, fish and veg for dinner and fruit with Greek yogurt for desert or afternoon snack.

I started yesterday- so one successful day at least!

Hi apple!

Thanks for posting.

Yes, I’m the same with food really... I can’t diet to save my life 😂! I’m just trying to make better choices, and low carb definitely appeals to me, as I don’t feel great eating lots of sugar and bread. I see how salads and loads of veg with some lean protein is the way to go.

I’m not treating it as a strict diet, but I’m going to plan to eat mainly low carb. The odd treat won’t kill me though Wink.

I’m just about to make some smoked salmon & veg egg muffins for the morning. I’m sure it’s not having easy foods to grab and eat which leads to my bready, buscuitty downfall Grin. So I’m prepping here. Feeling rather smug about it too Wink.

I’d be interested - I am pescatarian, although I largely eat fish for other people’s convinience. My diet is so carby i’m struggling to see how to eat without carbs. A typical day is

  • Porridge or overnight oats and fruit
  • Salad with fish / edamame beans/ houmous
  • soup when I get in, or 5000 rice cakes and peanut butter (this is an improvement on 1 million slices of toast)
  • Pasta and veg sauce /Veg sausage and mash/jacket spud, beans and cheese/stir fry with Queen/cashews and noodles
  • Yoghurt and muesli

Fruit snacks during day - apple, banana, grapes etc

It’s just so carby! Sometimes I have scrambled eggs for breakfast, but I need low carb ideas.

anniehm · 10/03/2019 20:26

I'm trying to do this (minus the vegetarian bit) I've opted for whole meal pasta and brown rice which doesn't taste as nice so you eat less! Convincing the rest of the diners has been .... challenging! But it works, you stay full for longer too. I need to shift a stone by June

FuckertyBoo · 10/03/2019 20:35

Oh exciting; more people!

bike, I guess low carb chia pudding instead of overnight oats? Courgetti instead of pasta etc.

Tbh, your diet sounds a lot healthier than mine.

annie, I like that tip for making carbs less enticing.

If it helps, I’m planning to have egg muffins for breakfast, mushroom soup and feta dip with crudités for lunch and prawn stir fry with broccoli ‘rice’ for dinner. That’s the plan... the reality may be different...

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 10/03/2019 20:44

How about trying spiralized courgette instead of pasta op? It's really nice.

I think porridge is really good for you I would stick to it -but maybe out less oats and add a grated apple? Make it with almond milk?

FuckertyBoo · 10/03/2019 20:46

I also don’t have much against oats tbh. I definitely wouldn’t go out of my way to avoid them.

OP posts:
FuckertyBoo · 10/03/2019 20:54

Fruit, oats and pulses I’m definitely still having.

Morning all!

Well, my egg muffins were vile 😂 🤢.

I think I just have the palate of a five year old Blush.

Oh well. Onwards and upwards. I might just have a nice Greek salad with my soup at lunch; I was going to make feta dip to have with crudités, but since my muffins were a total flop, I’m not sure if I want to do and new recipes today!

How is everyone else doing?

My one year old was up in the night a lot, so I’m tired today. Must resist the biscuits! They are not the answer.

Just to let you know that there’s a whole section of the LCHF diet for vegetarians on the boot camp thread of the LBHF board here on MN.

FuckertyBoo · 11/03/2019 08:42

Ah cheers IM0GEN Flowers.

OP posts:
FuckertyBoo · 11/03/2019 09:11

To clarify though; this is NOT a boot camp thread. I don’t have the stomach for boot camp I’m afraid! I’ve never lasted on it and, as I recall, neither do most of the people on there.

If it works for you though, more power to you.

I’m not out to lose a fuck tonne of weight. I don’t even care if I stay the same weight and I don’t really need to. This is about health and bloat for me.

I was just letting you know there were recipes there. Not saying you should join boot camp.

Good luck to you.

FuckertyBoo · 11/03/2019 10:23

Oh yes, I know and I did thank you in the first place. I just wanted to clarify that this is not a boot camp thread.

The vegetarian recipes thread on the boot camp section is useful for low carb veggie recipes, definitely. I personally would not follow boot camp itself though.

Not vegetarian but prefer to not eat loads of meat. Started lowing carbish diet 2 weeks ago. Going ok. 1.6lbs down. Got a low carb vegetarian cookbook from the library and couple of other general low carb cookbooks that are quite good. First attempt at low carb "bread" today :) Was tasty.

Vegetarian / pescatarian low(ish) carb?
FurryDogMother · 18/03/2019 19:43

I've been mainly pescatarian and low carb since last September - 3 stone off so far, and it's been painless (though I did also give up alcohol, so that could have something to do with it). Favourite breakfasts are smoked cod with duck eggs and chilli pickle, and scrambled eggs with smoked salmon. Lunch is usually a few bits of cheese with fresh tomatoes or similar, and then dinner - ah I love dinner! Cod steaks in Italian tomato sauce (loads of basil, garlic and olives), topped with Parmesan, or a white fish curry (Great British chefs, they use monkfish, it's a bit expensive for me), or crispy-skinned mackerel with an Asian-inspired sauce (Jamie Oliver), or Delia's hot and sour Thai broth (hers has chicken, I use prawns), or plaice with cream and mushroom sauce, or a couple of sea bream fillets pan-fried and eaten plain, with a squeeze of lemon, or ray wings in black butter, or salmon poached in white wine and fish stock, or Salade Nicoise, minus the potatoes - all of these (apart from the salad) usually with either steamed broccoli, asparagus, French beans or cauliflower, or courgettes/mushrooms cooked in garlic butter, or with a side salad. As a change from fish, I sometimes have aubergine parmigiana or cauliflower cheese (sauce made from just cream and cheese). Hope that gives you some ideas!

FuckertyBoo · 18/03/2019 20:30

Hi all!

Sorry, I haven’t checked in of late. Somehow this had slipped right down my “threads I’m on” list, so I forgot to post Blush.

I have been doing ok with the lowish carb, though I will confess to some definite slip ups!

I don’t tend to weigh myself, as I find it counterproductive, but I definitely feel a bit less flabby and bloated, which was my main goal anyway.

I’ve been having some oats in the mornings, (sometimes oatcakes, sometimes porridge), and a piece or two, (sometimes three), of fruit a day, but trying to avoid other grains and sugary stuff.

I have been having some wine, but not huge quantities or all that often. I have two very little children who wake me up at 6 most mornings, so it isn’t worth drinking a lot!

Well done you furry, for giving it up entirely! And your recipes sound amazing. I’m now eyeing my post-workout supper of olives and grated cheddar, disdainfully.

Maybe a bit late, but re rice substitutes; I have made cauliflower rice and broccoli rice in the past. The cauliflower rice I found a bit faffy to prepare tbh... It had to be blitzed in a food processor, which would be fine, but my food processor seems to leave giant pieces of things whole, so they sort of whirl around in the processor, definitely not being processed Hmm. Then the squeezing it out, to get out all the liquid, involved a tea towel and, well, squeezing. My tea towel never recovered, from the force and the smell. The washing machine, (after I’d washed said tea towel), also smelled of cauliflower for a time.

Cooking it was no problem though and I liked the taste and texture.

I preferred making the broccoli rice, which just involved chopping it into teeny pieces with a knife and then cooking it. It was also fine, but if you pushed me, I’d probably say I preferred the cauli.

FuckertyBoo · 19/03/2019 08:25

Morning!

Not sure if anyone is still doing this, but thought I’d post my plan for the day.

I’m just making a cheese & veg omelette for breakfast, lunch is going to be tuna salad and dinner will either be cauli cheese and some salmon or a prawn Thai curry with broccol rice.

gigi556 · 19/03/2019 09:04

I've been for a run and now sipping a fruit smoothie (not low carb but I'm not doing super low carb just no bread, pasta, rice and white potatoes).

Lunch will be lentil
Soup.

Dinner stuffed red peppers.

Does anyone eat vegetarian protein substitutes? I've found meatless meatballs pretty yummy :)
