Hello! Day One Done - anyone want to join me?

SharkSkinThing · 29/09/2015 20:43

Just wanted to say hello and see if any other new starters wanted to buddy up for support and advice?

I've got 3 - 4 stone to lose, all gained AFTER having my DS who is now - god help me - 5. All down to long-term sleep deprivation and sugar reliance, and forming terrible habits. And wine to help me cope with the sleep deprivation,

Anyway, hoping to finally turn things around now that he's finally sleeping (sometimes until 5.30am!). Would love to chat to others who are finding that this WOE works for them.

xx

Well done, fit. A lovely way to start your weekend. :) Wine

SharkSkinThing · 26/11/2015 19:05

Well done fit, that's amazing - well done, and much deserved! I don't think anything feels as good as seeing those scales nudge downwards!

Well, there are four more weigh-ins for me until I have a break for Christmas (my last will be Sat 19.12). I don't intend to start being, er, festive until 23/12 (basically when my Mum arrives and we open the chinzano!).

I am aiming for 5 pounds in that time, but will settle for 3. I might post some pics!

My week has been a bit flat, think it's just a weird time of year? Kids are tired but school doesn't break up for ages; I have an essay to write that I don't feel very confident about; work is busy but a bit dull and our house is upside down whilst we have the flooring repaired. All lovely once it's done, but we have to be out of the house all weekend...I fear for my eating plans to go a bit tits up!

Is everyone else ok?

xx

Hi , paleo/low carb here. I'm down two stone since this time last year and have surprised myself by how well I have adapted to it. Smile

SharkSkinThing · 27/11/2015 08:55

Wow, always - well done!

My DP told me this morning that I snore so much less now! Romance!

Fav those recipes look fantastic, I can't wait to try some of those. I think my mum would love the berry delight and cheesecake. I have never thought about making my own flavoured chocolate but it's a great idea.

I started to feel ill on tuesday night and by wednesday morning I had a very upset stomach, aching all over and felt very down. I assume it was a virus as I'm almost back to normal now. I did attempt to go to work on wednesday but by midday I was back home tucked up on the sofa.
I haven't had much appetite but I'm feeling hungry now so looking forward to dinner tonight.

Fit to over 12 lbs in that timescale is amazing, I bet you are delighted and proud of yourself.

Shark well done on the snoring front Grin

FavadiCacao · 27/11/2015 17:32

That is brilliant, Always.
Fellow Paleo here! Are you following any specific programme?
I've been following Mark Sisson for years, lost 35kg and maintained for a couple of years until I fell off the wagon a twice; this time I'm doing a very high fat (65-75%), moderate protein keto.

Strange isn't it, Shark? I don't snore at all now, I thought it was down to the weight loss until Dh fully embraced this WOE and now he only snores occassionally.

Glad you're feeling better, Durham Flowers
The berry delight is a lovely choice: it's best served after a couple of days in the fridge, when it has had to mature lovely subtle notes - like a trifle would do. :)

Ds wanted Japanese egg rolls, last night but I really wasn't in the mood to make him a separate meal. I could have made the omlette and teryaki with xylitol but Dh and I are avoiding sweetness and soy altogether. The compromising led to a wonderful discovery Grin :
Keto spaghetti! I blended 6 eggs (as per Japanese style) and ~3 tbs of cheese (like in Italian Frittata); I poured the batter to cover the bottom of a well buttered oven tray and baked @160C until it set. Once cool enough to handle, I rolled and cut thin strips, which once unrolled resembled spaghetti. I served it with mushrooms and thick Italian cream sauce (butter, cream, nutmeg, parmesan to thicken and parsley).

I used a combo of cheeses: my homemade cream cheese, mascarpone, parmesan and a tiny bit of homemade goat cheese; but I'm sure it'll work with whatever cheese.

AlwaysBeYourself · 27/11/2015 23:18

Fava no particular program. Just aiming for clean natural eating really. I don't eat lots of fat unless it comes naturally with food. No dairy wheat etc.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. Smile

SharkSkinThing · 28/11/2015 08:09

Morning all! I hope you can all see a bit of sunshine out of your windows this morning for a change!

I stayed the same this week, but considering that (a) this is the first week in 9 that I haven't lost and (b) I had a kit kat, two bottles of wine and a carby lunch last weekend, I'm not complaining.

Three more weigh in's to go!

Does anyone have a strategy for Christmas and staying on track? My only real plan to is to not drink every day and avoid the very bad stuff like bread and pasta. Other than that, enjoy the break!

Come back, we miss you! xxx

On our way back from Christmas shopping in Edinburgh, had a great day and didn't to too far off track. We had a cooked Scottish breakfast when we arrived which kept me going until we stopped for a drink. I had a large black coffee ( good ) a large prosecco ( bad ) and a giant chocolate and coconut macaroon ( very bad )
Walked for miles so I'm finding it hard to feel too guilty !! Grin

My strategy for Christmas is very similar, enjoy myself but stay away from bread etc as that's hard to stop eating once you start again.

I'm going to be super good tomorrow. We've bought low carb lorne sausage to have for a late breakfast.

Hope everyone is home warm and dry by now Smile

SharkSkinThing · 28/11/2015 20:38

Durham sounds perfectly delicious and acceptable! Walking burns 2,000 calories an hour at this time of year: fact! Ask fit, our resident fitness expert!

I love Edinburgh: the whisky, the cullen sink, the twisty streets and ghosts! Did you get much shopping done?

Walking burns 2,000 calories an hour at this time of year: fact! Ask fit, our resident fitness expert!

If it's brisk walking in the cold, you might be looking at higher rates of calories burnt. But exercise shouldn't be about burning calories (cause it's very hard to get an accurate read!) It should be about feeling good and getting your body working. So if you felt tired Durham and like you'd pushed yourself, then that's all good!

It was my birthday this weekend and we went camping in the desert, and I somehow managed to avoid eating a slice of my birthday cake, or any other carbs. So feeling very proud of myself. :) Had a lovely jog this morning, but I've got a stubborn knot in my upper left thigh that's making it a bit painful to run, so I need to get myself a proper sports massage (oh the hardship...) ;P

DurhamDurham · 29/11/2015 08:25

Shark I don't know where the day went, we did some shopping but only stocking fillers. We mainly ate and walked Grin and seven hours passed before we knew it.

Happy Birthday The, sterling effort to avoid carbs and not even have a slice of your own birthday cake. I'm not sure I have that level of will power!

I did feel tired from my day walking yesterday and today my legs are aching so I assume it's done some good. We did go up and down a lot of steps through the day and that's really good for your legs isn't it? With every step I took I was thinking.........cellulite be gone!!

Thefitfatty · 29/11/2015 10:47

If it's that "nice" dull muscle ache, its good. Sharp pains are the bad ones, and yup walking up and down stairs is a great work out. :)

Thefitfatty · 30/11/2015 08:47

Hey everyone, just want to wish you all good luck for the next week. We've got Dec 1st to the 6th off here, so I will be enjoying some family time, and a little staycation at a local resort. :)

I will try to stay on the diet, however there will be copious amounts of wine, so not expecting a weight loss this week!

DurhamDurham · 30/11/2015 09:38

The have a fantastic time with your family, enjoy your wine Wine Wine Wine

FavadiCacao · 30/11/2015 15:18

Does anyone have a strategy for Christmas and staying on track?

I think my plans have already been scuppered!
We went to the farm shop we used to go to before all the farmers' markets popped up near us, on the way back we spotted a new intringuing sign -which of course we had to follow. After meandering through a few country lanes, we arrived at a very unique and special place, just in time for their wine and cider tasting weekend and 25% off cases of wine... Wink

On the good side, I worked like a donkey yesterday: loft is finally all sorted; the lounge floor is almost all stripped, ready for a fresh layer of polish...

Happy belated birthday, fit. Flowers Well done for steering away from birthday cake. Enjoy your staycation and wine Wine

I hope everyone is back on track this week. :)

devoncreamtea · 30/11/2015 18:36

I am here!!! Sorry I have been a bit absent lately - had a ton of family events to contend with, culminating with my mums 60th last weekend which was nice (and a bit carby🍾)!
No loss for me (unsurprisingly!!) but no gain either.
Did anyone see that programme 'doctor in the house' on bbc 1 last week? It was about a bloke who had back pain? Anyway the therapists he goes to see both do the same thing as my dp!! He trained with them - the technique is not mainstream so really surprising to see it on the TV!

Loving the recipe chat! Very inspiring. I went to this grass fed meat supplier place the other day and got some game...!! Made a casserole. V nice. They sold pigs trotters...I thought of fav - bet you would know What to do with a trotter!!

fit so impressed with your brilliant loss, great stuff!

durham love Edinburgh! Sounds like a lovely time was had.

Welcome always I like the paleo/primal approach too, I really want to be healthier and have a better relationship with my body...! I have found willpower to be an issue for me, but I am working on it as I felt really different without grains/sugar - more energy, more stable emotions, more resilient.

shark - hello!💐

Queenbean · 30/11/2015 19:23

I lost you all! It disappeared off my active chats and I couldn't bloody remember the name of the thread title - eventually I googled "cow tongue" and found you again Grin

I have had a week of ups and downs - Christmas season seems to have rolled around already and having been to a wedding at the weekend has taken its toll. Being back on the wagon doesn't feel very fun but I know it's only a day or so of missing bad food and then I will feel all virtuous again...

FavadiCacao · 01/12/2015 09:06

I googled "cow tongue" and found you again
That made me laugh to tears, Queen Grin

Devon, I have to know about pig trotters! Zampone con lenticchie is the Italian Traditional New Year's Meal served -nationwide- shortly after midnight to wish health and a good and prosperous year! Grin

Trotters are not readily available, so I tend to serve a deconstructed version: lentils with thin strip of pig skin and homemade cothechino sausage -which traditionally has the same filling as zampone.

It is a super simple dish:
-Simmer skins with odori (1 onion, 1 carrot, 1 stick celery, 1 sprig rosmary, 2 bay leaves and a tin of plum tomatoes) to make a broth;
-When the skins are soft enough (~2 hrs), slice them an return to broth;
-Remove odori
-Blend the cooked carrot, celery and tomatoes and retun to the broth;
-Add sprouted lentils (soak for ~24hrs), cothechino -normal GF sausages will do- and a glass of white wine.
-Cook for a further couple of hours.

It makes for a lovely Happy New Year!
Tempt me with christmas cake/pudding, panettone and the likes, I have no problem resisting; tempt me with lentils, it's a different story! I might make a lentil veloute' this year to keep the carbs in check! Grin

SharkSkinThing · 01/12/2015 17:39

Hi gang - sending love but running off again to collect DS....sorry been a bit quiet, house has been chaos whilst flooring being done. Will read and post more tomorrow.

Hi everyone

Wasn't feeling very well and had to stay in bed yesterday with vertigo, and fell off a little Had toast and marmalade without butter, two crumpets with honey (no butter) and DH made me some chicken veg and rice stir fry ( no fat) so ended up being a bit of a low fat day all in all. Really needed the carbs as sometimes when I feel sick only carby stuff will help. Does anyone else feel like that?

Better today so back onto paleo.

SharkSkinThing · 03/12/2015 19:09

Aw, always, sorry to hear you were poorly, and hope you are ok now. I think when you are ill you have to give your body what it wants!

queen that really made me laugh! How many groups can say that they have 'cow's tongue' as their moniker!

fav, my dear, you sound as busy as ever in your kitchen!

House is back to normal now, and I'm annoyed though at having to miss two exercise classes this week, but it couldn't be helped and that's life! Food has been fine, so hoping for a steady one pound off again on Sat's weigh in, which will make me 13.11 and 1.6 stone off. If I see 13.9 before Christmas, I will be thrilled!

How is everyone else getting on? xxxx

OP posts:
AlwaysBeYourself · 05/12/2015 00:58

Thank you so much Shark. Yep, better thanks. Stayed in bed and DH looked after me.

I had a much better day today. Yesterday I didn't have food in for me so felt like I wanted to give up but today was a new day and I went food shopping and got stuff in for me. Tonights dinner was chicken flattened and griddled with garlic and parsley in oil with salad and homemade red cabbage coleslaw and cooked lemon slices. 3 Medjool dates and a little dark chocolate and lots of tea. In fact that's all I have had all day today.

Look forward to hearing if you have managed your pound off this week.
I would like that too but the bread I had on Tuesday has caused water weight and fluctuations. It will settle down again though.
Hows everyone else doing?

SharkSkinThing · 05/12/2015 07:52

Hey, always, sounds like you are getting a bit better and eating nice, wholesome food. Take it easy today and make sure you are well for Christmas!

Bread (and pasta) are totally off for me now, they make me feel dreadful!

An unbelievable 2 for me, so now down to 13.10!!!! A total of 1 stone 7 pounds, so I am aiming to see 13.8 on my last weigh in on 19/12, though tbh I am not planning on letting it all go to pieces until 23/12!

I am so pleased. I never believed I would ever break the cycle of over-eating/feeling crap since having DS five years ago. I feel so much better!

How is everyone else doing? xxx
