Wow, we got to 1000 messages!

Welcome back from the previous thread and welcome to all new!

I have been Paleo since September last year, I started as an ex-vegetarian/vegan, I wanted to give up gluten and I had been doing 5:2/IF, which lead me to Paleo/primal. I am 40, I have 2 kids age 8 and 6. I have no major health issues, but I would like it to stay that way. I have bad skin, which has improved since starting Paleo and my dandruff has disappeared. I have gained some weight since starting Paleo, but I was not overweight before, although I would like to get back on my pre Paleo weight - I just love Paleo mayonnaise too much ;) I still practice IF and I lift weights 2-3 times per week. My family is also Paleo.

I have just come back from a camping weekend where I was not strict Paleo as I was camping with other families and I just didn't want to spend my entire weekend telling my kids "no, you cant have it". I do think that Paleo camping is entirely possible, think tinned fish, nuts, sausages, eggs etc.

Hello everyone! I am losing weight steadily again, which is good. Enjoying following this diet so much still.

In the last few days I've experimented with making paleo pancakes and today cauliflower pizza base and they were both delicious. Surprisingly so. I'm really not wanting to go down the Paleo baking route, I can't believe how stuffed full of nut butters and honey some recipes are and I know my weight loss would stall, but happy to have the odd treat here and there. I think I'm not losing weight as dramatically as when I did my Whole30 so trying to be strict with nuts and the dark chocolate I've been allowing myself, so hopefully that will help. I find if I get lazy with my meals I really snack a lot more. Also I've re-introduced dairy/yogurt (so perhaps I can't call my diet Paleo anymore technically) and not sure if that isn't making the weight loss slower. I know it stalls it for some people. I would love to lose a stone by Christmas so do need to be strict with myself.

goodasitgets · 26/09/2013 15:08

The pole class is amazing, I've surprised myself with how much I love it. It's not a "sexual/sensual" one, no routines and seductive dancing, we just do a warm up (with burpees!), and then work on positions and spins etc before an abs section and a cool down

giraffeseatpineapples · 27/09/2013 15:05

Well done both!

goodas I had heard pole excersises were v good excersise - can imagine its fun and you must get surprised reactions when you tell people! To be honested I am too embarressed to even do zumba!

itstarts I am really intrigued by cauliflower bread!

Totm so I cant stop eating dark chocolate. also youngest dd has croup so having really disturbed sleep.

Have ordered the gweneth paltrow book from the library hoping there will be some interesting things to try in it.

Hope thread keeps going! Lots of people seem to have stopped posting :( Is there a good uk facebook primal/ paleo page does any one know, I am still on the 5:2 one and even though I don't fast really it is still interesting to read the odd thread.

giraffeseatpineapples · 27/09/2013 15:07

honested Confused

buildingmycorestrength · 29/09/2013 09:50

Husband made me the most lush dinner last night, which I never would have thought of.

Basically cauliflower cheese, but with bacon and fennel. Yuuummmmmm...

Weight still slowly coming off. Grin Am trying to increase fats and proteins if I get hungry days, but it is hard retraining my mind to interpret hunger as hunger for fat and protein rather than carbs.

I'm still using the Libra app to track my trend weight...I weight myself daily and then don't get too hung up about blips upwards occasionally.

I also use coconut oil on my face and hair now and it is amazing. Removes all make up, makes my skin and hair so soft, etc etc. Style and Beauty will tell you all about it. Grin

giraffeseatpineapples · 29/09/2013 17:25

Well done on continued weight loss building, your dh's creation sounds yummy - fennel is my new favourite veg at the mo. Ooh going to check out style and beauty for that, I keep dipping my toe into natural beauty care then reaching for the basics shampoo. Am Terrible at maintaining a skincare regime (basically dont have one!). I saw beef dripping really cheap in waitrose - is that basically what is in the green pastures beauty balm? Would be worried about attracting bugs being asleep with dripping on my face [bleugh].

goodasitgets · 29/09/2013 17:34

What can I do with chicken breasts and pesto? This is going to sound stupid but I want to cook something I can reheat at work tomorrow, I'm doing roasted veg
Would you just cook the chicken and chuck pesto in?

FavadiCacao · 29/09/2013 18:16

Just busy, busy, busy but I wanted to say well done to all weight losses and rather fancy some of the fitness levels!Grin

Pesto is a sauce designed to just chuck in at the end, almost as a coating. I have never tried reheated pesto (being brought up with freshly made for 'this' meal')...So I would keep the chicken and pesto separate until the reheating time and add a bit of lemon juice (lemon wedge equivalent) before reheating.

I have been indulging in some home-made olive oil soap (Marseille/Marsiglia soap) and I'm pleased to say it works as beautifully as any bought Marsiglia or Castille soap! Grin I love coconut oil for my hair but for my skin I prefer avocado or shea butter. Now! what to do with the beef drippings? I think dh would feel deprived if I use them in a non-culinary way! Might just have to hide them! Grin

goodasitgets · 29/09/2013 18:48

I've actually got some seasoning so might cook chicken with that and lemon, then stir pesto through roasted veg

goodasitgets · 29/09/2013 21:57

Ok I did chicken breasts marinated with mrs dash chipotle seasoning, olive oil and lemon juice, then roasted veg tossed in tomato pesto
Yum!

giraffeseatpineapples · 29/09/2013 22:42

Hi Favadi [waves] Maybe give the dripping facial regime a miss - might attract nuzzling from your dh! How do you make the olive oil soap btw?

goodas, I have reheated pesto pasta in the microwave before and its not perfect but worked ok! Sounds yum and way nicer than a sandwich. Aubergine pesto is really nice in roasted veg too. Enjoy your lunch tomorrow.

Wiifitmama · 02/10/2013 09:37

Hi again,

I am terrible at checking in, but am back now. I started the primal 21 day challenge on Monday to get back on track with getting the last half stone off (again) and maintaining better. It's not that different to how I normally eat, but I have cut out dairy now (I was having about 200ml of milk in big lattes 3 or 4 times a day!) and stopped calorie counting. Learning to drink coffee with no milk (or sugar which I cut out years ago) has been a challenge! I started getting an organic veg box delivered last week so have been learning to use and love new veggies. Tomorrow's box has celariac and runner beans in - neither of which I have cooked with before so any tips welcome!

buildingmycorestrength · 02/10/2013 09:45

Wiifit Google celeriac soup. Delish. Can't help with runner beans, think they are highly overrated. Grin.

giraffeseatpineapples · 02/10/2013 10:08

Apparently you can make celeriac chips but I havent tried this. Only had celeriac once in a box and cant remember what we did with it tbh.

havingamadmoment · 02/10/2013 17:28

Hello, I tried paleo as an experiment a few months ago. I have always suffered with random stomach pains and digestive problems so it was just a trail really. A few weeks before I had a scan because i had had very prolonger bleeding which found a few cysts on my ovaries.

Within a week of starting my stomach pain had vanished and I lost 10 pounds over the month. I went back for a rescan of the cysts (as there were quite a few!) and they were gone.

However, I went back to eating my normal food culminating in today where I am lying on the couch having eaten a bread, chocolate and a whole host of other things I KNOW I shouldn't really eat (oh and having regained the weight I lost btw) My stomach is killing me and i feel like total shit. Sad, achey and blah.

I am going to retry this diet but I have one question - one of the reasons I stopped eating it in the first place was that I have a strong family history of heart disease and I am on blood pressure medication already (I have been on since 18 am now 30). I worry about the level of red meat and animal fat which I was eating - I was losing weight which was good (I need to lose about 50 pounds) but I was worried about eating loads of eggs and bacon!.

Has anyone got any ideas for what I can eat for breakfast thats a little healthier? Oh and there are 7 of us so not too expensive - I know I am a pain!

giraffeseatpineapples · 02/10/2013 19:08

tinned mackerel is good with a microwaved sweet potato, natural yoghurt and berries if having dairy, veg soup, liver and musrooms, general leftovers, some kind of smnoothie or skip breakfast altogether like Intermittent fasting. I have eaten similar and feel crap too :(

maybe get your bloods checked and monitored for reassurance also check out Chris Kesser heart disease

havingamadmoment · 02/10/2013 19:28

thanks giraffes, I do get various blood tests once a year plus have had scans of my heart (cant remember the the actual name for this now) and ecgs regularly - and I am all fine at the moment. I think I will try it longer term simply because I feel so much better and that has to be a good sign i think!

goodasitgets · 02/10/2013 22:54

Weighed at doctors today. Official loss since beginning of June is 15.4lbs Smile not bad but not great!
Starting mefenamic acid for periods - I had a copper coil in 3 months ago and now my period is every 2 weeks and lasts 8-9 days
Having a huge amount of bloods done tomorrow - iron, vit d, vit b12, thyroid t3 and t4 as constantly exhausted

goodasitgets · 02/10/2013 22:55

Peanut butter and full fat yog is nice for breakfast
I do eat bananas so sometimes one of them blended with almond milk and a spoon of peanut butter and some cream as a "treat"!

giraffeseatpineapples · 03/10/2013 01:34

Goodas will be interesting to see what you are low on. Be amazing if you can take a supplement and lose that tired feeling. Do you only have less than a week clear of period? I have about 2 weeks clear so mine arrives every 25 days and lasts over a week.

havingamoment def good to follow instincts and how you feel around food as advice is always changing about what is a healthy diet.

havingamadmoment · 03/10/2013 06:24

goodas I had a mirena 1.5 years ago, which I was told would stop or at leasy lessen my periods. The current pattern is 2 weeks bleeding 1 week off. I have had a scan (which showed cysts the first time but none the second). I sympathize!. It is still better than the period pain I had without (which I dont get now at all even thought the bleeding is longer) which is why I have been putting up with it.

oohdaddypig · 03/10/2013 06:54

Havingamadmoment - just a quick one as DCs about to get up. I'm not sure you need to think about "healthier" breakfasts (the fact the diet worked so well for you first time maybe highlights that). I think this way of eating requires a 360 degree u turn on the whole idea of "bad" fats.

I take my guidance from Paul jaminet but any of the likes of chris Kesser, mark Sissons say the same thing. So eggs in coconut oil is probably a great breakfast as it stands....

Sorry I haven't been in the thread a while. Had a great holiday and only fell off the wagon a little bit. The French pastries are too wonderful.....

goodasitgets · 03/10/2013 14:43

Well I take source of gold multi vit, omega oil and an iron liquid
I have 14 days without a period then it lasts 8/9 days but I'm on day 10 at the moment
I don't know, I work shifts but I cried this morning because I am so exhausted and sleep doesn't make it better

giraffeseatpineapples · 03/10/2013 18:07

goodas that sounds like a horrible feeling. There is a really good blog on nom nom paleo as she does night shifts as a pahrmicist nomnompaleo.com/post/55156756199/surviving-the-night-shift

goodasitgets · 03/10/2013 18:10
