Wow, we got to 1000 messages!

Welcome back from the previous thread and welcome to all new!

I have been Paleo since September last year, I started as an ex-vegetarian/vegan, I wanted to give up gluten and I had been doing 5:2/IF, which lead me to Paleo/primal. I am 40, I have 2 kids age 8 and 6. I have no major health issues, but I would like it to stay that way. I have bad skin, which has improved since starting Paleo and my dandruff has disappeared. I have gained some weight since starting Paleo, but I was not overweight before, although I would like to get back on my pre Paleo weight - I just love Paleo mayonnaise too much ;) I still practice IF and I lift weights 2-3 times per week. My family is also Paleo.

I have just come back from a camping weekend where I was not strict Paleo as I was camping with other families and I just didn't want to spend my entire weekend telling my kids "no, you cant have it". I do think that Paleo camping is entirely possible, think tinned fish, nuts, sausages, eggs etc.

I though milk & more did raw milk but just checked and no, they have channel island milk though which is extra creamy apparently.

I find scrambled eggs on their own or nuts dont really fill me up and I would go weird if i ate a whole banana!

giraffeseatpineapples · 13/09/2013 18:47

Maybe more greens too?

marzipananimal · 13/09/2013 19:23

Is yeo valley butter as good as kerrygold does anyone know?
We're thinking of getting an organic veg box delivered to help us head back towards a more paleo diet. Does anyone else get one?

RawCoconutMacaroon · 13/09/2013 19:26

Salad leaves are always a good addition, good vitamins and minerals and hardly any carbs. I tend to serve a lot of my meals on top of a bed of leaves ie fish or chicken cooked in butter and herbs, pop onto a pile of leaves and drizzle the cooking juices over as a dressing... But if protein/fat is not filling you up, you need to eat a larger portion Grin if you normally have 2 eggs, try 3! Nuts are a little bit carby for me so probably not great to eat too many, too often - I find a small handful at a time is enough.

It's trial and error really, to see what suits you best.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 13/09/2013 19:34

No, KerryGold is much much better. This butter is ONLY from grass fed cows, they don't eat any grain at all while they are giving milk. This gives a much more natural nutritional profile to the milk (much higher levels of omega 3 too). Grain is not a natural part of a cows diet.

Yeo valley and other organic brands are still feeding them grain daily, so although its better than non organic for other reasons, the milk will have higher levels of omega 6 (not good).

KerryGold is a bit of affordable luxury - a very good quality fat and cheaper than raw coconut (my other favourite).

giraffeseatpineapples · 13/09/2013 19:59

Hi Marzipanimal - how is baby! The problem with boxes is you get a lot of veg in one go and are under pressure to use it up. A lot of people seem to like riverford. I was getting abel and cole salad boxes and quite liked it as they often have offers and also sell useful things like bones for making stock and chicken livers etc. Quality was fine and it meant I prob had a bit more variety with veg than if i chose everything myself. I have cancelled our box as of next week, I went to a farmers market last week and it seemed quite good value for veg, but will prob get boxes occasionally.

Raw I do sometimes eat three or four eggs then feel hungry! If I have two eggs but with spinach and a piece of bacon that is more filling somehow... Nuts are good for bridging the treat gap when i have fallen off the wagon but you're right they are too carby and I need to try and clear them out again for a while if I want to lose weight.

marzipananimal · 13/09/2013 20:24

She's doing well thanks giraffes, very smiley and chatty but she seems to have got a bit of a cold so I fear we may be in for a bad night Sad
I'll go for kerrygold then, thanks Raw

oohdaddypig · 13/09/2013 21:08

Hi and a big hello to the new folk.

Raw - I always enjoy reading your posts as you know a tonne of stuff and I say that as someone who reads a lot on all this!

We are heading off on hols for a fortnight - usual luggage restrictions but I have packed my coconut oil much to DHs disgust! I am slightly worried about how I will avoid grains whilst travelling because like some of the other posters I have a big appetite...

I know there is a lot of chat about hunger and carbs causing blood sugar spikes.... I find when I eat the right portion of carbs/fats/protein I don't suffer the same hunger issue. For me that means three egg in coconut oil for breakfast plus a banana. I do think hunger means your body is needing something and personally I feel carbs are essential, especially if you are active.

I feel the whole "good fats" theory is creeping in by stealth. I'm amazed at the number of folk adopting it yet the official advice remains low fat and whole grains. Will a forward thinking country actually adopt this as healthy eating soon?!

oohdaddypig · 13/09/2013 21:11

Marzipan - we get a veg box and I love it. I have to be quite creative cooking wise sometimes! They also deliver (grass fed) meat etc so it's very convenient.

We also have kerrygold - I think it's the only mainstream grass fed one. I guess organic isn't always best!

Inishowen78 · 13/09/2013 21:29

raw I'm intrigued by your blood sugar testing.. I'm a gadget lover so I may look into one and do some experimenting myself! I've been tested for Gestational Diabetes in my 3 pregnancies but didn't have it.. however my last baby was 11lb9, I think that was mainly due to my massive chocolate addiction when i was pg with her. A nurse gently told me afterwards that it'd be advisable to try and tackle my weight afterwards, she said because of the size of the baby I was at a high risk of developing diabetes in the next 5 years.. and she's early 4 now. My other 2 were 8lb12 then 9lb8, so she was a full 2lbs heavier than ds2. Today was a busy day - kids had a party at a play centre and then soccer training this evening, but i brought snacks with me in case anyone got hungry.

It makes me smile that Kerrygold is the holy grail of butters, it's in every shop here, from the corner shop to the big supermarkets. And my parents use Low Low ugh! I'd have butter with everything, I just love it!

I've been using My Fitness Pal to log my food, mainly to keep an eye on the carbs. I'm at 92g today. On Monday I was suffering with bloating, blocked sinuses, lethargy... today my sinuses are clear, I have ankles and knuckles again, and the boots that felt like concrete blocks on my feet now just feel like boots again! DH has commented that my eyes look really clear too, I thought I was imagining that :)

oohdaddypig · 13/09/2013 21:34

Inishiwen - I get blocked sinuses too! With me it's any dairy other than butter. I'm hoping now I've stopped grains that will clear up!

I empathise with your chocolate addiction :)

Inishowen78 · 13/09/2013 22:20

I'm loving the articles on the dietdoctor.com site!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 14/09/2013 11:54

Inish- see, that's interesting, in one preg, I was told I had Gestational diabetes even though my fasting test was just below the diagnostic criteria (the hospital was doing a trial using much lower than normal cut off). I'd had a large baby the year before and was a "big girl" so I got a monitor and was told to test x no of times a day and control by diet. That was 18 years ago, and I took it as a warning, but didn't discover low carb eating until about 7 years ago.

It was from the Swedish GP (dietdoctor.com), that I heard about self testing - he's keen on that, as a tool for the individual to see how different foods affect them. I'm a total science geek, so that kind of self torture is right up my street Grin and initially I did many tests a day for about a month (1,2and3 hours after food), now I do it for 2 or 3 days maybe once every few weeks to keep an eye on things... I find it motivating.

One reason to test yourself is metabolic syndrome (which may be the CAUSE of obesity rather than a result of it), anyone who has developed fat round the middle- that's the biggest sign that insulin response is going to hell, but in that situation, your blood sugar spikes and the fasting bloods can be within the limits of normal, however the the response to carbs is not - the BS can rise to high normal and stay there for many hours. That was the case with me - normal checks wouldn't have picked that up, but testing hourly until BS drops to fasting level as suggested by dietdoctor showed that carb foods were raising my bloods for 7 or 8 hours! Fasting BS and 1 and 2 hour readings never exceeded the "limits" of normal, though they were high.
I think that means things were about to go very very wrong, so I feel this WOE has allowed me to dodge a bullet.

Peter Attia (TheEatingAcademy), has a few interesting things to say about the genesis of obesity (very science geek tho), and he is damn hot too Blush, so well worth watching some of his blog videos for that reason alone!!!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 14/09/2013 11:59

I agree daddypig, it's creeping in by stealth.

giraffeseatpineapples · 14/09/2013 18:13

hmmm, peter attia not bad Grin .... rob wolfe has a slightly geeky charm ;)

My blood sugar was quite low during pregnancy, I think 3 in the last one when I had the fasting blood sugar test - I am 5 ft 4 my babies were 9lb4; 9lb and 8lb12 - I was tested in my second and third pregnancies for gd. I got quite bad shakes in mid stages of pg, particularly when queing up, when I would feel faint and like I was going to be sick.

Inishowen78 · 14/09/2013 21:48

Ohhhhh Hello Peter Attia Wink he's just my "type" lol I shall enjoy reading his articles! I have often wondered how I seem to be predisposed to putting on weight.. DH is a carbaholic but he's like a rake! He is very active at work and home which undoubtedly helps. Today has been a bit more carby than usual, and I've felt quite tired as a result. I'm going to experiment with changing the timing of my carb intake next week too..

RawCoconutMacaroon · 15/09/2013 13:19

What I like about the paleo/primal blog guys, none of them is that young - mostly 40 or older and all, all of them look way younger than an "average" person on a SAD diet. I don't think it's just because they are fit (as in exercise Grin. I think the clean diet gives people wonderful skin, and a "glow".

It's a pretty good advertisement for this Woe.

giraffeseatpineapples · 15/09/2013 14:50

Not drawn to Mark sissons though although he does look very glowy for his age Grin

giraffeseatpineapples · 15/09/2013 15:51

This video is amazing - not only does her tummy shrink in her boobs rise up 222lbs - 134lbs

goodasitgets · 15/09/2013 17:56

I have a pair of size 14 shorts GrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrinGrin
I asked pole fitness to save me a size 18 and she said sure. Got there and she handed me them and only when I'd put them on said "see. Not a size 18 now"
Apparently I am not seeing the body changes myself

giraffeseatpineapples · 16/09/2013 16:17

Thats brill there is a big difference between 14 and 18! I have the opposite problem and think I'm thinner than I am - reverse body dismorphia!

So I made my first ever roast leg of lamb dinner was actually quite nice!

Inishowen78 · 17/09/2013 21:46

goodasitgets well done you!! That's fab!
giraffes I hear you about the reverse dysmorphia, I've often said I must have it.. I think I'm a 14 but really I'm an 18-20! I fell off the Paleo wagon yesterday, it was my old classic mistake. I weighed myself! Even though I could feel myself shrinking, I had to go and step on the scales. And had lost 2lbs in a week. Which is great, but of course I had convinced myself I'd lost more. And I got disheartened and reached for the crisps. Today wasn't as bad but wasn't Paleo. But tomorrow is a whole new day!Grin

giraffeseatpineapples · 18/09/2013 10:34

Inish hows things going now? At least with paleo unlike very low carb it isn't a big setback. some people find making gradual changes the best way. I am trying to focus on it as a way of life and settling for slow weight loss - app it is more likely to stay off that way. I am concentrating on keeping away from grains and chocolate and nut butters at mo as they are my stumbling block but imagine the second two might make a reappearance at christmas Grin. Having brazil nuts and dairy still for now but trying not to go mad. Might try and drop dairy nuts and root veg at some point if nothing shifting but was a lb down yesterday.

goodasitgets · 24/09/2013 16:42

Well this is what I did last night Grin

Still losing which is good

giraffeseatpineapples · 25/09/2013 16:26

Goodasitgets thats pretty gravity defying Grin ! well done on weight loss!
