Wow, we got to 1000 messages!

Welcome back from the previous thread and welcome to all new!

I have been Paleo since September last year, I started as an ex-vegetarian/vegan, I wanted to give up gluten and I had been doing 5:2/IF, which lead me to Paleo/primal. I am 40, I have 2 kids age 8 and 6. I have no major health issues, but I would like it to stay that way. I have bad skin, which has improved since starting Paleo and my dandruff has disappeared. I have gained some weight since starting Paleo, but I was not overweight before, although I would like to get back on my pre Paleo weight - I just love Paleo mayonnaise too much ;) I still practice IF and I lift weights 2-3 times per week. My family is also Paleo.

I have just come back from a camping weekend where I was not strict Paleo as I was camping with other families and I just didn't want to spend my entire weekend telling my kids "no, you cant have it". I do think that Paleo camping is entirely possible, think tinned fish, nuts, sausages, eggs etc.

Loving the sophisticated new me! Girraffe After all the effort to strip the coconut from it's shell I discovered it ripped my mouth to pieces - I'm gutted as I love coconut.

Messing · 24/08/2013 08:44

Hi all, am very new to this so please. can anyone recommend cheese and yogurt for likelypaleo, assuming small quantities are actually allowed. I have joined Marks Daily Apple so hopefully will be more clued up soon. TIA.

giraffeseatpineapples · 24/08/2013 16:47

Hi messing - welcome! Raw cheese seems to be what is reccomended but I have never tried any raw dairy so can't reccommend. I think goats cheese is often unpasturised. I try to go for organic or just to have dairy free periodically.

I haven't really eaten today - have some liver in the fridge which needs cooking but I am struggling! Will prob have small dinner with family then the liver later.

giraffeseatpineapples · 24/08/2013 16:51

Shame about coconut snow sounds incredibly frustrating. When you get back from hol is it worth rereferring to another specialist about your mouth or trying some of the allergy testing rawCM mentioned?

Messing · 24/08/2013 17:26

thanks giraffe. I love goats cheese so that sounds good (in moderation of course Grin )

FavadiCacao · 25/08/2013 17:15

I'm back :)

Welcome to all new. Messing try your local cheese farm- mine does unpasteurised and pasteurised cheeses (and raw, unpasteurised milk).

I had a guest over for a while, who really enjoyed our way of eating but was desperate for something sweet. I eventually gave in and came up with the recipe below:

Gluten Free Sumptious Chocolate cake (not so Paleo!)

3 egg whites
120 gr sugar
25gr tapioca flour
60gr 100% cocoa powder
1 1/2 tsp vinegar
1/2 tsp bicarbonate
1tbs orange juice (freshly squeezed)

Method.

  1. whisk egg white and sugar to stiff peaks
  2. fold in other dry ingredients
  3. add wet ingredients and blend
  4. bake in a lined victoria sponge tin for 1 to 1 1/2 hours at 140 C

We've enjoyed a lot of fish this summer and Crab has been one of our favourite.

Crab stock

Shell and claws of 1 crab
50gr butter
1 celery stick
1 carrot
1 small onion
2 large tomatoes
Salt and pepper to taste
Water to cover all

Bring to boil and then simmer for 3-4hrs (or in slow cooker)

Crab in spicy tomato

Meat of 1 crab
3 garlic cloves
2 chillies
Butter
1 handful of fresh chopped parsley
1 small glass of white wine or a little vodka (optional)
3-4 tbs of crab stock
250gr cherry tomatoes (chopped)
salt to taste

Method

  1. melt butter
  2. garlic, chilli and tomatoes.
  3. when tomatoes start soften add liquid ingredients and simmer for 15-20 minutes
  4. add crab meat and stir for a couple minutes. Ready to serve (it's lovely on a bed of courgette ribbons cooked in some of the crab stock)

Favadi - welcome back Grin your crab recipe looks great. I confess I haven't cooked crab yet (really like the little blighters) but need to overcome that :) will report back how I get on...

Ps would love to be a guest in your house if you make cake like that on demand Grin

oohdaddypig · 31/08/2013 21:20

I just killed the thread. Resurrect it please!

giraffeseatpineapples · 31/08/2013 21:36

that's so weird I was just checking in when you posted that OOhdaddy - I had some yummy tapas yesterday but also the best part of a jug of sangria so not very paleo! How are people finding summer hols and paleo - I have found it much harder than I expected and will need to do some low carb/sugar or whole 30 detox once the children go back to school.

giraffeseatpineapples · 31/08/2013 21:41

PS you didnt kill the thread either Grin

goodasitgets · 01/09/2013 20:20

I have done a new before/during photo. Will find bravery to post shortly Grin

Hello all, back from my travels....fell into a big pile of stretchy French bread while away, sometimes you just need a break or like me you just can't pass up the opportunity to indulge your foodie curiosity. God it was good. But my mouth started to react badly to croissants and then finally baguettes - it seems to be getting more and more irritated, so today I return to Paleo with no regrets and a slightly bloated stomach. Wink

oohdaddypig · 04/09/2013 12:30

welcome back snowlie. did you have a lovely holiday? I don't miss croissants but I'd struggle to avoid the french cakes.... I'm sure your tummy will recover soon. I wonder if wheat affects us more once we've avoided it for a while?

Giraffe - what is whole 30?!

Anyway, has anyone tried Kombucha? It's probably not actually paleo/primal as it's made using black tea and sugar although the end result doesn't contain much sugar. I have dabbled with kefir in the past and loved it so I'm trying this for a change. It's apparently very good for your gut bacteria - free probiotics :)

I would really love to drop my dark chocolate habit. Does anyone completely manage to avoid all sugar and artifical sweeteners? Is this something that after a few weeks you stop craving?

What would a "treat" be?

Hope everyone else is well x

snowlie · 04/09/2013 14:42

Avoiding French cakes was hard but sugar has an unpredictable negative effect on my mouth, it feels scalded and I never know when it's going to happen, just that when it does it's always after something sweet, I can't even reliably eat fruit, so when in France I did feel a little deprived, even though I no longer crave sugary food, I crave taste sensations, I guess that's why I indulged in bread with a thick layer of butter.
You could eat nuts as a treat food but I can so easily eat a whole packet I tend to avoid buying them. I try to find interesting cheeses but I get easily bored by them unless I served them with almond crackers. Wine is a nice treat too.

snowlie · 04/09/2013 16:06

My word - what a difference asgoodas very impressed! You are looking hot!

goodasitgets · 04/09/2013 16:12

I'm still heavy - 15' 9 in those latest photos but I've accepted I am going to be heavier if that makes sense? And I'm working on tightening everything up, eating well, exercise

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/09/2013 16:48

Looking good!!!

You say you are 15 stone 9 in those pics? Are you 7 foot tall also?!

Despite losing a LOT of weight, I am still heavier than I should be (15-20lbs), but the shape change is good, waist size very much smaller, more muscular so the weight carries much better... Not brave enough to photo bucket myself -Grin.

goodasitgets · 04/09/2013 16:52

Nooo I am just about 5'11, size 16
I get fed up sometimes when I (literally) work my ass off and my BMI is still too high but I know I'm healthy

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/09/2013 17:01

Pah! BMI is a bit rubbish anyway, health and tone more important imvho.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/09/2013 17:04

I'm 12 on bottom, 18 on top - I recon a generous build up top must add a little to BMI without adding to health risks (it's the belly fat that carries the risk).

goodasitgets · 04/09/2013 17:11

Yeah I am a 34JJ which must add some weight! Grin
I do have really muscled legs as well

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/09/2013 17:21

36H here!

...Wonders idly if low carb, higher fat diets promotes/preserves boobage in comparison with other diets... Wink
