Week 3 - Summer Low Carb Bootcamp - When the Going Gets Unexpectedly Tough

BIWI · 12/05/2013 22:49

I'm starting this thread a little earlier than usual, as I have to be at work at dawn's crack tomorrow Grin

Come and confess all on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness

So from tomorrow, you can move on to Bootcamp Light, if you want. (Rules on the tabs on the spreadsheet). That means that you can introduce fruits (berries only) and nuts (in small quantities), as well as alcohol (albeit in moderation!)

You don't have to, if you don't want to. You could continue to do Bootcamp if it's suiting you - or do Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. Whatever suits you.

Whatever you decide here is something really important that you need to know about weeks 3 and 4 (and possibly 5):

It is very common for weight loss to stop at this point in the diet. You may even find that you gain a pound or two. DON'T PANIC! It is entirely normal. Your body is switching from carb-burning to fat-burning, and is re-adjusting to your new WOE. You have jettisoned a lot of water weight, and have emptied your glycogen stores. You will also have lost some fat. Now, your body is working on just burning fat.

PLEASE DON'T PANIC AND START TO TRY AND CHANGE ANYTHING. THIS IS ENTIRELY NORMAL AND HAS BEEN REPORTED BY MANY LOW CARBERS BEFORE YOU. STICK WITH THE KNITTING, AND YOU WILL BE REWARDED BY SEEING THE SCALES MOVE AGAIN IN THE NEXT WEEK OR SO

Good luck for next week. As ever, post any questions on the questions thread, and keep us all updated as to what you're doing/eating.

Yesterday was a bit of a disaster, I just didn't fancy anything I was allowed to eat! My heavenly salad is now boring, I'm eating too much cheese and processed meat, and I'd be happy never to see an avocado again! Sad i also felt sick all day. The result was that I didn't eat enough (although I did drink loads of water), was decorating so lots of physical exertion, loaded up on painkillers for my back and started feeling really ill and peculiar. I did feel better when I finally had dinner, but lost the plot a bit and had too much wine. Feeling slightly hungover this morning and cross with myself. I've got a stupidly heavy period too which probably wasn't helping.

Friday
B - ham and cheese
L - usual salad
D - shredded pork belly with shredded savoy cabbage, spring onions, ginger and garlic, fried in loads of butter and sesame oil until crispy. I made up a chinese 5 spice mix - fennel seeds, star anise, nutmeg, cardamom and allspice, all toasted then ground, which went in at the frying stage. It was bloody amazing!!

Saturday
B - ham and cheese
L - didn't really have any, just picked at things - olives, tomatoes.
D - spatchcocked chicken cooked on BBQ, sweetcorn on the cob (i thought I needed something a bit carbier because I was feeling so ill), asparagus and little tomatoes.
Loads of wine. Blush

I wouldn't worry too much Crabby ? it's hard when it's time of month, and it sounds like you did loads of exercise with the decorating. Like the sound of your pork belly dish. Remind us what your usual salad is and maybe we can throw in a few ideas to help with variety.
I'm struggling a bit with breakfasts still after years of cereal, fruit/granola/yoghurt/honey or toast/marmalade being the norm. Ended up eating packet roast beef slices this morning, with horseradish and avocado (mainly because beef had to be used by today and the avocado was going too soft). OK but not great...
Chips if you're after snacks for a shortish flight, how about small packet of nuts and/or packet of olives (the Crespo pitted black olives in herbs ? Olives du marche ? are fab, though not cheap...).

Not sure about lunch today (feel like I've eaten it for breakfast) but dinner is roast chicken (skin on), celeriac mash, sauteed greens, gravy ? and a glass of white wine (while I nag encourage my youngest to do her stockpiled homework)

Chips - in that instance you do take the net carbs - I think the remaining carbs will come from polyols.

What time is your flight? Could you make sure that you eat at the airport before you go?

Epic fail last night. Had that gin and tonic. Made it last ages by adding lots more ice half way. All fine. Then succumbed to red wine. Lots of red wine. Then had crisps and half a packet of biscuits. Woke up in the night with heartburn and a hangover and a good dose of self loathing.

Won't be doing that again. I'll stick to my trusty water from now on.

B was Greek yoghurt with flaxseeds.
L - DH made a yummy omelette with chorizo, red onion, green pepper, mushrooms and grated cheese. I'm not a huge omelette fan but this was yum.
D - will be roast beef, celeriac dauphinoise and roast broccoli.

Dreading weigh in tomorrow!

Buda here's a parable for you that I often think of after all my good intentions melt into nothing in contact with wine... Wink

I've cut and pasted it here...

A buddhist monk was out begging from house to house in a village. One door was opened by a beautiful woman who was the wife of a wealthy villager. She decided to see if the monk could be tempted to break any of his vows so she invited him into her home under the pretense of being a spiritual seeker. There she engaged him in conversation. After some time had passed, the monk said he needed to be on his way, excused himself and went to the door discovering it was locked.

?Please open the door,? he asked the woman.

?Not just yet,? was her response. ?I will let you out of this room only if you do one of the following: Kill the goat who is tied up outside the back door; have sex with me; or drink this jug of wine.?

He was in a dilemma. As a Buddhist he could not resort to violence by fighting with the woman to get out of her house. Furthermore, her three conditions all violated the vows he took to become a Buddhist monk. Slaughtering the goat would mean breaking the precept against killing. Having sex would be breaking his vow of celibacy. Drinking from the jug would violate the precept of avoiding intoxicating drinks. Eventually, the troubled monk decided that the least offensive thing he could do would be to drink he wine which would harm no one but himself.

Because he wasn't used to drinking liquor of any kind, the monk got drunk. Because he was drunk, his resolve was weakened and he became mindless and careless. Furthermore, the liquor made him hungry so he killed the goat. While it was cooking he had sex with the woman.

had my first real struggle with eating low carb yesterday. didn't know what I wanted but it wasn't in the house! have only been drinking water or tea/ coffee but drank low cal lime juice squash and ate two slices of edam which seemed to help.
think its more to do with ditching my HRT patches (to see if that stops my migraines) than anything.

aubergines roasting in oven at present for baba ganoush. yum!

chips those Atkins bars would be one to take on the plane. Easy to store not going to leak/smell etc... I have used them in the past when necessary, as long as they don't become a regular habit deffo better than falling into airplane food!

L/B - duck, courgettes, mushrooms and eggs
D - BBQ and salad

Thanks! It's an 8 hr flight across the Atlantic.....hmmmm.....I may try and do a nuts/Adkins bar combo. Thanks all.

BIWI · 19/05/2013 16:27

The other thing to do would be to contact the airline to see if you could arrange for a particular meal.

Personally I think an 8 hour flight is too long not to have something (proper) to eat. And airline food on long haul flights isn't that bad these days (although I guess that might depend who you're flying with).

Chips. Don't most airlines offer diabetic meals on long haul services? All you have to do is pre order it min 48hrs in advance.

You could order it and eat the bits you wanted. At least you will know its all sugar free (dressings sauces etc).

I know it doesn't guarantee low carb but you could pick the LC bits to eat.

Other wise a few bags of M&S pork crackles to top you up.

If you eat several of those Atkins bars on the trot your insides will explode and on a long flight that would be a nightmare.

If you are flying from heathrow I think you could pick up some sashimi from the sushi bar or eat there before boarding.

Also pepparami (sorry BIWI but the options are limited).

I had lamb shawarma and salad for lunch while out today - lush and halo worthy :)
I did feel a bit hard done by when we were offered a pecan brownie choccie to try in Hotel Chocolat and then again when EVERY SINGLE PERSON on the park was eating a 99. And dp has a lovely frosty Peroni. But I dutifully tucked into a babybel and some salted almonds from my handbag.

The next couple of days are going to be a bit difficult willpower-wise, my Mum is coming tomorrow and we are going to IKEA so she will be like 'haveacakehaveacakehaveacakeitwonthuuurtjustone'.
And then SIL is coming the next day and staying overnight - wine fags and crisps will all be testing me! I'm going to get some more almonds and crackles and I have a bottle of red so I will just try and be sensible. I'm more likely to smoke than eat badly though Blush

Dilemma
I'm going to a fancy pants restaurant for dinner tonight.
Do I a) stick to LC as far as is reasonable or b) have whatever I fancy & get back on the wagon tomorrow?
Its the whole shebang; amuse-bouche, all the courses with home made petit fours with coffee. I really get the opportunity to eat there. Do I have the will power??

Report
bulletwithbutterflywings · 19/05/2013 17:33

In my experience (apart from the puddings) fancy pants restaurants are quite easy to low carb in. Having said that, if it was me I would have what I wanted and start over in the morning!

Report
BIWI · 19/05/2013 17:42

Can you look at the menu online before you go, middleagedspread? That can help you get your head around what choices re going to be available to you.

My strategy is always to see what low carb options there are - and whether or not I really like them/feel it would be an appropriate 'treat' in such a fancy restaurant. I'm not prepared to spend the evening feeling deprived!

But don't use that as an excuse to go for all the high carb options!

Hope you have a lovely evening.

Thanks both.
I've decided to drive as alcohol will deprive me of any will power.
Will try & avoid pud & after dinner treats but will not deny myself anything else.
BIWI, how much damage can one evening do? I've tried so hard all week & haven't lost any weight, I couldn't bare the thought of putting in on.

Problem is, Middle that once you've depleted your glygogen stores, you start to burn fat instead. One evening of high-carb will see your glycogen stores stocked up again - adn possibly cause weight gain.
Having said that, it's not worth lilving if you can't eat what you like once in a while. Grin
Have a lovely time.

Breakfast today - soya yoghurt
Lunch - salad with smoked salmon and mayo
Dinner - roast chicken, buttered green beans, roast cauli, roast half leek, lettuce with mayo
Greek yog.
Also did loads of gardening, which should help me lose the last half-stone...

Had corned beef, and two hb eggs for brekkie

Cheese, lettuce, pastrami, pepperami for lunch

Two salmon fillets with buttery leeks, mushrooms and courgettes for tea

Pkt pork scratchings for snack, and 2 teaspoons of PB, which is like crack to me.

But heavy on the processed meat today...

Chips didn't realise it was such a long flight! I'd probably try to get to the airport early enough for a big low carb meal before boarding in the airport itself, then take snacks and just pick at what I could from the meal. Being diabetic, I have ordered the diabetic plane meals before and wouldn't particularly recommend it - basically you get a load of low fat rubbish and they just replace and desert with fruit. Possible snacks, olives, nuts, an atkins bar (only 1!), pepperami, babybels, cucumber sticks etc... depends on how much you have to take, but I probably would take one of those sistema lunch boxes with lots of compartments and have lots of snacky things in it. Also top tip - if you ask nicely the stewards will usually let you have one of the big bottles of water to save you keep asking for those little ones or small glasses of water. If you get hungry though, just eat what they offer and then move on afterwards!

Just went to my parents for dinner - we had bbq meats with salad so was brilliant and dad made panna cottas for pudding - and made mine with truvia. I went crazy and had it with 3, yes 3 whole raspberries... !

I've been lurking as I have been a bit depressed at sts for 3 weeks:( Dreading weigh in tomorrow. How do I kick start the whoosh fairy?

Is it usual to sts and need an extra push? I haven't done uber bootcamp as I am a bit nervous of it and being hungry ( I'm a nightmare if I'm hungry)

Ay top tips gratefully received.

Report
BIWI · 19/05/2013 20:05

Lavender - have you been absolutely, hand-on-heart, following Bootcamp rules? Have you been eating enough fat/drinking enough water?

There are definitely times when you will STS - certainly around weeks 3-5 low carbing it isn't uncommon at all.

Why not try ubercamping? It's only 3 days.
