Thanks everyone! Am delighted. Grin Have a great sunny weekend, all.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 03/05/2013 17:45

Not much chance of sun here in Scotland- I fact the was snow forecast this morning Shock !
Oh well, we did get sun yesterday tho Smile

teaandthorazine · 03/05/2013 18:18

Oh no, raw what a shame! I did hear on the radio this morning that the weather in Scotland was pretty atrocious...

It's lovely here in south London (well, the weather is!) - sorry to rub it in! Am just going to pour myself a well-deserved g&t. I have a feeling dinner tonight may be quite non-paleo but I'm counting it as my 20% Grin Have a weekend of BBQs planned so will repair the damage then... if the weather holds!

teaandthorazine · 03/05/2013 18:19

Oh and well done building' so pleased it's working for you!

teaandthorazine · 04/05/2013 16:11

Lunch - 5 big fat spears of English asparagus, steamed. A slice of butter melting over them, and a sprinkling of salt. Eat with several slices of smoked duck breast. Feel completely sated and happy Grin

If I've not already done so, can I seriously recommend Lidl smoked duck breast. Bloody delicious, and cheap.

snoworneahva · 04/05/2013 16:56

Smoked duck breast sounds great. Had some asparagus and poached egg this morning, lovely it was too.
Just had some ribs with guacamole and spicy roasted veg. Used a dry rub this time, next time we'll do a wet rib.

Have just discovered chimichurri sauce, Epicure have a ready made version which isn't full of nasties and is just fabulous with meat and would work well on a self catered holiday.

intravenouscoffee · 04/05/2013 18:57

I've been really impressed with some of Lidl's meat and veg. You have to be a bit selective but a lot of the stuff is fabulous.

Resisted a big slab of chocolate cake at work and instead had tuna salad and some raspberries and yogurt. Snacked on macadamia nuts. Feeling pretty good considering I've not slept for about 36 hours!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/05/2013 19:18

Slow Cooker paleo chilli for us tonight.
Cubed brisket and mince (400g each) a large onion, 4 tomatoes, 2 peppers, 2 chillis. Salt, pepper and garlic... Chop everything, cook for about 10 hrs on low or about 2 hours high, and 5 on low. Serve with mixed leaves and pepper scoops.
There are loads of leftovers for Sunday breakfast (works really well with a fried egg on top! Our teens love it).

Has anyone got a dehydrator? I'm wary of the cheap ones, I want to dry meat (jerky) with it and the Excalibur one gets really good reviews but costs a lot. Anyone have any experience?

snoworneahva · 04/05/2013 20:50

Think I'm going to try jerky in the oven first, I can't see us eating enough jerky to justify the excalibur price tag, but i welcome being wrong. So many gadgets I'd like to buy - a sous vide for starters!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 04/05/2013 23:00

I would eat jerky on a more or less daily basis if I could afford the cost! Dh and a couple of the dc would too... Gluten free, sugar free jerky costs £3.50 for 40g so a once a week treat ATM !!!! Still seems a lot to spend hundreds on a dehydrator but the more I look onto it the more I want that particular one - seems the horizontal fan makes it the choice of people who dry lots of meat as well as fruit. I think the cheaper ones are not so safe for meat.

I would also like a proper ice cream making machine ... They are also hundreds£ !

I suppose of the two, the dehydrator would be the more sensible buy...

snoworneahva · 04/05/2013 23:14

I was tempted to buy an ice cream maker but we have a frozen bowl type already which I've convinced myself is probably enough, I'm also looking at a Green Egg smoker and need to buy a proper casserole dish. Kitchen gadgets are my Achilles. Smile do you think the cheaper dehydrators pose a food poisoning risk, a fire hazard or flavour/texture issues?

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/05/2013 14:01

Well, reading around various forums, the Australians say only the Excalibur and another top of the range one with a similar fan (on the side not the bottom), are safe for drying meat, most of the cheap ones have no fan, or have a fan at the bottom both of which causes problems with drying unevenly- the cheap ones seem to be fine if you only want to dry fruit and veg.

It looks like a serious piece of kit Grin, I like the bare minimal lines - I love gadgets but only if they work!

So, the halogen oven lasted only a couple of weeks before I donated it, but the slow cooker is so useful I bought a second one...

It's not always the expensive things that I like tho! My apple corer (how did I manage so long without one?!), is great, I am such a child, I love using it! And my Mandolin, though its a bit scary to use, is great for making the bases for frittata "pizza" out of yam, sweet potato and/or courgette.

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/05/2013 14:05

Oooo, I like the look of the Green Egg!

Salbertina · 05/05/2013 17:14

And breathe! Just vern on a thread arguing with being slightly rude to a poster claiming that vegetarianism is natural and it natters not that we are omnivores < v sceptical emotcion>

Where's me biltong? Grin

Salbertina · 05/05/2013 17:16

Raw- love the sound of your paleo chili, shall try pepper scoops next time. Even dh no longer wants rice w it now!

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/05/2013 18:45

Well, people are free to be veggie or vegan if they want of course but it can in no way be described as natural to eat soy or vat grown quorn products instead of animal protein (and it has half the protein content of
Meat and the wrong kind of iron...).
Not eating animal products at all put you at risk of many deficiencies unless you are very very careful with your diet.

Our ancestors made use of what was available to them, and that included a lot of seafood, meat, eggs, insects, as shown by analysis of bone mineral and food dumps.

Even our close relatives, apes and monkeys are not vegetarian, eating insects and even hunting for meat! When this behaviour was first observed, it was written off as aberrant behaviour as it didn't fit with the idea that our chimpanzee cousins were not noble peace loving vegetarians Smile.

Salbertina · 05/05/2013 18:48

Completely.. And of course people are free to be vegetarian/vegan but my point in that thread was as omnivores this is not "natural" for us and as such is a lifestyle choice. Pmt possibly making me a little militant however Grin

RawCoconutMacaroon · 05/05/2013 19:03

Hello all, hope you are all well?
I've slipped for the last week and feel utterly rubbish, fat, bloated and unhealthy. I've finally found some friends, and I'm finding it hard to socialise without eating crap or over drinking. But it feel like taking Bout eight steps back. Woke up this morning with a heavy stomach and tough I was going to be sick.
So I'm going back to being a bit of a hermit for the time being, which is fortunate as I have a ton on at work with the key stage 2 SATs to administer, etc.
SO. Getting back on track. I'm tutoring this morning and want to spend the thirty quid on sensible, whole, unprocessed, delicious foods. Can anyone make some suggestions?

Also, I have some lamb mince in the fridge. Anyone made lamb burgers? Without the bun, I think, but will have to think of something to replace that. I have fresh rosemary, garlic, garlic oil and mint...

Salbertina · 06/05/2013 09:24

Lamb burgers sound lovely!

You cd always make oopsie rolls? Google will find recipe

snoworneahva · 06/05/2013 09:45

20 things to do with your dehydrator just for you Raw looks tempting!
How about lamb meatballs? Fast day today - think I'm going to have some BBQ'd chicken with green veg with my 500kcal later on.
What's everyone else eating today?

Salbertina · 06/05/2013 09:51

May fast too- just had flaxseed toastbandbraspberries, maybe soup later. How about you?

misscph1973 · 06/05/2013 09:54

I tried the Oopsie rolls, really didn't like them, too eggy.

nappyaddict · 06/05/2013 10:10

Which section is the smoked duck breast in at Lidl? Is it with the cooked meats, raw meats or freezers?

Salbertina · 06/05/2013 10:13

Yes, they are different, amazingly my dc loved them!
