Well, reading around various forums, the Australians say only the Excalibur and another top of the range one with a similar fan (on the side not the bottom), are safe for drying meat, most of the cheap ones have no fan, or have a fan at the bottom both of which causes problems with drying unevenly- the cheap ones seem to be fine if you only want to dry fruit and veg.

So, the halogen oven lasted only a couple of weeks before I donated it, but the slow cooker is so useful I bought a second one...
It's not always the expensive things that I like tho! My apple corer (how did I manage so long without one?!), is great, I am such a child, I love using it! And my Mandolin, though its a bit scary to use, is great for making the bases for frittata "pizza" out of yam, sweet potato and/or courgette.
