Week 6 - May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - getting back on the wagon

BIWI · 17/06/2024 08:12

Morning all.

Seems like a bit of slippage all round - and I include myself Blush. So let's draw a big fat line over last week, and start afresh this week!

There are three weeks left, so time to undo any damage and drop a few more pesky pounds. Perhaps consider going back to strict Bootcamp for this week?

Anyway, hopefully we all have a good week. The weather - at least here Darn Sarf - looks a bit brighter. Possibly even warmer! Well, at least it's not raining ...

As ever, here's the spreadsheet

Good luck to us all Flowers

You don’t need your stick BIWI as I’m berating myself. I’m very very sad to say I’m up - 153lbs. 1, 5, THREE!! It’s wine. I’ve been out loads this last two weeks and succumb to wine. It’s never just one glass either. I know this happens & I still bloody do it! I feel bloated too. I’ve been this weight plenty times before but not felt heavy and sluggish. I really need to turn this around.
@MissBeck Pilates is fab. I’ve not done it for a while due to abdo surgery & broken ankle but will get back on it over summer. Joseph Pilates invented it to assist the recovery of injured dancers (ballet etc). It is all about alignment, long lean muscles, core strength, flexibility etc. Some of the ‘moves’ are very similar to yoga, which I’m sure he drew upon given yoga has been around for centuries. It’s a good toning exercise.

Did the Tuscan Chicken recipe last night for the whole house (no extra carbs for anyone this time!) and it was delicious. Grilled halloumi for lunch and it’s the lamb and onion skewers tonight.

Gingerwarthog · 19/06/2024 18:06

It's ok @BIWI
They were fresh apricots.

Gingerwarthog · 19/06/2024 18:08

I think that's about 3.9g carb in each fresh apricot.

Getting fed up with what I'm doing for dinners. I HAVE mostly been keeping it simple with meats and salads. But I sat with it tonight and just couldn't be bothered so boxed it up for lunch tomorrow.

What's on your regular weeknight dinner list. Just DH and I to cook for the girls have dinner at school and tea at home earlier..

Fed up of fedupsville

prettybird · 19/06/2024 20:55

@SpellitwithaY My midweek suppers include

• griddled flattened turkey steaks (smeared with olive oil) served with various buttered or roasted vegetables

• frittata with loads of shallots, leeks if I have them (and an other veg you fancy) plus loads of Parmesan

• cauliflower cheese ( BIWI's fabulous recipe)

sliced cabbage (or courgette ribbons) carbonara (veg done in butter and then mixed with beaten egg, pancetta fried with garlic and EVOO and loads of Parmesan and ground pepper).

All of these (with the exception of the cauliflower cheese Wink) can also easily be done with or alongside carbs for family who're not low carbing (eg pasta for the carbonara and split the egg/cheese/pancetta mix between the pasta and the veg alternative).

@BIWI
The bananas were dried though. 🤣

Gingerwarthog · 19/06/2024 21:56

@BIWI
Not really! I have been really good since my rose slip.

BIWI · 19/06/2024 21:58
Grin

I did actually have to go back and read your post to make sure that you really hadn't mentioned bananas!!!

Evening all, I’ve been reading through your threads with interest. I’m considering doing the boot camp but have a holiday in 3 weeks, so it could be difficult to manage when I’m away.

I’ve already started to cut down on carbs/increase fat but not enough to go into ketosis. Is it worth starting now, knowing that I will probably ‘fall off the wagon’ or best to wait till after the holiday when I can fully commit? I don’t usually drink alcohol but I’m really looking forward to a few cocktails by the pool!

Basically, is low-carb/high fat yo-yo dieting a bad thing? Can it mess up your metabolism? Advice would be much appreciated, thanks!

LilianaVikavanovich · 20/06/2024 08:39

We’re back from Mallorca , with a nice tan and a few extra lbs
The hotel served lovely food. Salads , cheeses , beautiful fresh fish cooked on the grill as we waited ( 3 fresh fish every night , as well as 3 different meat cuts to choose from )
It sounds perfect ? But they also served lovely baked goods , together with not enough water and too many Apreol spritz ….
Back to normal now

prettybird · 20/06/2024 09:25

@Windysquall - great that you have a holiday to look forward to Smile

If it's 3 weeks away, I'd do the 2 weeks of strict Boot Camp to get you used to the WoE and ketogenically adapted.

Once you're on holiday, you can enjoy a few drinks Wink but at least you won't be craving sweet stuff as much Smile If you're going somewhere hot, you'll naturally want to eat more salads and fruit. Concentrate on that and if you do go off piste, so so mindfully Grin. When I'm in Greece, I try to concentrate on pistachios and olives rather than the crisps that dh has with our pre-dinner G&Ts on the balcony Smile.

Enjoy your holiday and get back on the wagon when you get back Grin You'll see an upswing on the scales (but maybe not as much as you fear) but with plenty of water and re-adhering to the rules, you'll be pleasantly surprised as to how quickly it will come off again.

BIWI · 20/06/2024 09:44

is low-carb/high fat yo-yo dieting a bad thing? Can it mess up your metabolism?

@Windysquall In the short term, as you would be doing, there won't be an issue. In the longer term, I would think it would only be an issue if you're significantly decreasing your calories. Generally, on a low carb diet, calories don't go as low as they might on a calorie-controlled diet, so I don't think it would be a problem. And there is one approach to low carbing which is called carb cycling, where on one day a week (I think) you have a high carb meal or day.

That said, I am not an expert, and it's not something I can answer definitively. Perhaps@StuntNun might be able to help you here? <sends up bat signal>

Thanks for the inspo @prettyprettybird , we'll be having cauli broccoli 🥦 cheese with our dinner tonight! I'll have to look out for @biwi 's recipe!

The frittata sounds nice too and not too complicated! Cheers 😁🙌😁

prettybird · 20/06/2024 10:00

Recipe is dead simple: a pot of double cream brought to the boil. As much grated cheese as it will take added to it (I use nearly a block of the Lidl Extra mature coloured cheese) - keep a bit back for sprinkling over the cauliflower. Add a generous squoosh of lemon juice (important!), some salt and pepper and a teaspoon of grain mustard (really lifts it) and then pour over the cooked cauliflower (I use the microwave). Sprinkle over the remaining grated cheese and then grill to your preference.

Stowickthevast · 20/06/2024 12:27

Oh I thought I was following @BIWI's cauli cheese recipe, but yours sounds even more simple @prettybird.

I cook the cauliflower, then stick it in a dish with a pot of cream and loads of cheese. Then I cook it in the oven covered for 20 mins and then finish under the grill.

If I have extra time, I'll roast the cauliflower and other veg I have lying around beforehand, which gives it a bit more flavour. It also works with a bit of added chorizo.

prettybird · 20/06/2024 12:30

@Stowickthevast - that is BIWI's recipe Confused - with the addition of the grain mustard (which dh and I think really lifts it).

LilianaVikavanovich · 20/06/2024 15:33

Thanks @BIWI
@Windysquall I’d suggest starting the Bootcamp now , say you lost 6lb before you go away , then put a couple of lb on whilst you’re away ( we all do ! ) you’ll lose it again when you get back , and you'll still be better off weight wise than had you not started this way of eating

Bootcamp interrupted by a holiday means you’ll possibly make better choices when you’re away ( unlike me , but that mango icecream was delicious ) and I’m still 10lb or so less than I was in September
Just remember the water 💦

MissBeck · 20/06/2024 22:10

Evening all,

Really disappointing myself at the moment. I HAVE to get a grip on forward planning my meals! Yesterday I had a chunk of cheese, a bag of scratchings and a few slices of cold pork for lunch and then my oldest daughter visited in the evening with her partner, but I was doing my assignment, which was due in last night, so never had an evening meal at all!!

Today, I've only had cheese and a bag of scratchings for lunch again! Then I did DD a ready made BBQ pulled pork joint on hotdog rolls, but she didn't like them, so to save throwing them away, I ate 2 of them! White bloody rolls!!

I need to put time aside to plan the WHOLE week, not wing it day by day. I haven't even done anything with that joint of pork! Will have to throw it now.

Moan over. 😂😂

BIWI · 20/06/2024 22:12

Meal and forward planning is absolutely critical for success @MissBeck

It's so easy to give in or justify the inclusion of foods that you shouldn't, otherwise!

I'm in that 'interesting' place right now where my size 12 jeans are too loose/baggy, but size 10s are still a bit too tight!

I'm not complaining though. I'm wearing pair of white jeans that I haven't been able to wear for years without knowing that they're too tight. My issue is that I carry my weight around my lower abdomen. So even though the legs and waist are loose, I still have an obvious lower 'bulge'.

MissBeck · 20/06/2024 22:16

@BIWI I'm going to buy a pack of blank recipe cards I think, and write down all the meals I enjoy, then pick 7 lunches and 7 dinners out on a Saturday for the next week and shop for the week ahead. My trouble is I buy all my meat in bulk at the butchers, shove it in the freezer, then forget to defrost things.
