May '24 Low Carb Bootcamp - the prep thread

Just a week to go before we start, so it's time to think about how you're going to approach this Bootcamp. Before I get into the detail, here's some background info/reminders about what Bootcamp entails:

The whole thing lasts for 8 weeks, but the first two are the strictest.

During all of Bootcamp, these are the foods you won't be eating:

  • pasta and noodles (brown or white)
  • rice (brown or white)
  • bread (of any kind - including wraps, bagels, crumpets etc)
  • potatoes, sweet potatoes and sweetcorn
  • pastry, pastries, biscuits and crackers
  • crisps and other savoury snacks, including popcorn
  • flour (anything baked or thickened with flour)
  • fruit (of any kind)
  • full sugar squash/cordial
  • fruit juice
  • sugar, honey, syrup (again, of any kind)
  • sweets
  • balsamic vinegar (any other vinegar is fine)
  • flavoured yoghurt
  • legumes/pulses (e.g. lentils, chickpeas, hummous etc)
  • grains
  • no 'lite' or light foods at all

After the first two weeks you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means you can add in:

  • some fruit (mainly berries)
  • nuts/seeds
  • some alcohol (dry wines and clear spirits)
  • some chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa)

... but all of the above occasionally and in moderation.

You may be wondering what you can eat!

A low carb diet is based around high fat, medium protein and low carb. So we will be eating:

  • any meat, poultry, fish and eggs (keeping processed meat/fish to a minimum)
  • most vegetables (there's a list on our spreadsheet showing which are the best ones to choose)
  • salads
  • butter
  • full fat yoghurt (not flavoured)
  • cream and cheese
  • olive oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, lard

If you have a look at this topic you'll see some lovely low carb recipes, which hopefully will inspire you!

I'll be tagging everyone who has signed up so far, to make sure that you see this.

Thanks @BIWI for running this. I had a Eurovision pizza blowout yesterday in the hope that I now won't be able to face white carbs this week anyway 🙈

Magnolia82 · 12/05/2024 11:44

Hi @BIWI Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into running these bootcamps.

I feel like I've asked this before (sorry) but I've tried to have a bit of a search through previous threads and can't find it...

What would you say is a good amount of carbs per day to be 'low carb'? I know that you don't really promote counting or tracking exact amounts, but I am short with only a few pounds to lose, so I think it might also be helpful for me to track my calories/carbs to try to work out why I'm still struggling to lose these few pounds.

BIWI · 12/05/2024 12:33

@Magnolia82 that's always a hard question to answer, as everyone responds to carbs differently.

Generally speaking, a keto diet is supposed to be less than 20g of carbs per day - which is very low. That's the same amount of carbs in Atkins Induction, which is the first stage of his diet.

Dr John Briffa called a low carb diet one that was 100g carbs a day, so aiming for around 30g carbs at each meal (assuming 3 meals a day) - although personally I think that's more like a maintenance level.

If you're finding that you're not losing, the only thing I'd suggest is that you start to count the carbs you're eating at each meal, and then try and reduce that carb count by around 5g. See what impact that has.

The other thing I'd suggest though, is that you also look at what you're eating, to see if this is causing you any issues. Try cutting dairy out for a few days and see if that helps. I'd also ask you if you're drinking all the water? And are you keeping the fat levels up?

It could be worth signing up to something like My Fitness Pal and inputting all your food for a few days, to see what the macro splits are - you should be something like 70% fat, 20-25% protein and 5-10% carbs.

You're welcome to join after your holiday @WouldYouLikeMeToSpellThatForYou - definitely agree that AI isn't the time to start worrying about the carbs Grin

Thanks @BIWI

Thanks @BIWI - that's really helpful. I drink lots of water (maybe too much?!).

However, I'm going to track everything in Nutracheck for the next week, as looking at those macro percentages you gave, I'm fairly sure my protein is probably higher than that and my fat is lower.

I do have yogurt (Greek - 10%) most days, so maybe I should try cutting that out if it could be dairy. But then my fat would be even lower? Maybe I'll just track everything for 1 week and then go from there. Thanks for your help.

Thank you! I hadn’t seen it.
Im guessing almond milk is a no?

BIWI · 12/05/2024 17:32

Almond milk is fine - just make sure it's the unsweetened variety

Thank you! I think I'm prepped and ready to start tomorrow. I'm going on holiday 8 weeks tomorrow so it's perfect timing for me.

StuntNun · 12/05/2024 18:30

@Magnolia82 most people will lose weight between 20g and 50g carbs per day. That's about 5-10% of your macros with 20-40% from protein and the rest from fat.

DrBlackbird · 12/05/2024 19:54

I’m okay for lunch and dinner but love my toast for breakfast! Alternatively love my porridge and brown sugar 🙈 Any suggestions other than yogurt for breakfast on the go?

Nestnearlyempty · 12/05/2024 20:02

Hiya- can I check whether dairy or oat milk is better (or even if oat milk is allowed at all)?

TheOnlyMrsW · 12/05/2024 20:05

Feel reasonably well-prepared, have omelette and salad ready for lunch for tomorrow and Tuesday, plenty of snacks if need be but im not a huge snacker so possibly won't be needed. Since starting lc last summer I mainly do 16:8 so will stick to that. Dinners are more of a challenge as DD is a fussy carby and here 50% of the time - tomorrow is chicken and chorizo rice but I'll take mine out before the rice goes in and roast vegetables to go with. Water is my downfall but now it's warmer it's easier.........hoping to get to 11 stone on this bc, lots of festivals/gigs to deal with though along with DD's A levels starting this week!!!!!

No to oat milk, as it's too carby - more so than dairy milk. Better to have almond milk (unsweetened, obviously)

Hi all, I did the last Bootcamp and lost 17lbs, which I'm v pleased with and just in time for summer!😁

What I did was plan my food for the whole week, made sure I always had lots of LC goodies in, and ate regularly so I was never craving carbs.

Some v useful LC products I've found are:
No sugar granola in M&S. Great with yoghurt
Waitrose do LivLife bread which are v thin slices and much lower in carbs than normal bread. Useful for occasional use. They also do seeded crackers, which again are great with cheese, pate or peanut butter.

Stick at it, it does work, and drink lots of water!😂

KrazyboutKillian · 12/05/2024 21:36

Ready for this week
to the p p asking any breakfast
omelette ?

Beatrixslobber · 12/05/2024 21:42

Thank you. I’ve meal planned, shopped and my lunch is prepped for tomorrow. I am rating to go.

Beatrixslobber · 12/05/2024 21:42

Raring obviously

mimosa1 · 13/05/2024 07:55

Reporting for duty. Weighing in this am at 81.6kg, which is 2.5kg off the last BC. I'm happy I've kept it off though a long way to go. I'm setting a more modest goal this time, and glad it's an 8 weeker @BIWI ! I didn't manage to complete the BC last time so a smaller time frame does feel a bit more manageable.

First breakfast was a fry up which is setting things up nicely :)

I bought some today @Glorianna but, luckily for me, DS4 discovered them and ate most of them before I got any. I have three left for tomorrow! Hmm

Hahaha! At least 3 strawberries is a good amount to add some FFGY! Smile I also sprinkle some chopped almonds and sometimes a couple of tea spoonfuls of this high protein chocolate pudding, outside of boot camp Grin
