Week 7 - Back-to-School Low Carb Bootcamp - the last fortnight!

Morning all

So we're very nearly at the end! Only a couple more weeks, but still time to drop a couple of those pesky pounds.

Time to take stock of where you are/what you've achieved - and to ask yourself if you're properly 'Bootcamp compliant'. Remember at the beginning, I talked about it taking 66 days (on average) to create a new habit? Well so far, we've completed 42 days. Hopefully that means that we're all well on the way to feeling that a lower carb diet can be a new habit, a new WOE.

And with that in mind, this week's challenge - should you choose to accept it Wink! - is to find a recipe that you have cooked before, or one that you like but haven't cooked, and adapt it to a lower carb one. Or simply to find a recipe that's new to you, but that is a low carb option.

Here's my choice: Bacon wrapped cod with bacon buttered greens

I like this idea because a) I want to eat more fish and b) as it seems to be impossible to buy cod that isn't skinless and boneless these days, this will work well.

Bacon wrapped Cod with Bacon Buttered Greens (Keto)

A small, but rich portion of bacon wrapped cod with the most delicious bacon buttered greens on the side! Even the kids will love it!

I think that's an excellent idea @BIWI. Would work for me!

HappiDaze · 27/10/2023 18:18

@BIWI sounds like a great idea

I've been ill, got locked out of MN for 3 / 4 weeks and now after a blood test I find out I'm pre diabetic. No wonder I'm always tired and thirsty.

I was super strict on my low carb WoE and enjoying it and then just fell off the wagon when I lost MN access.

Clearly the support matters here and I need to get on top of things properly again

Currently roasting a chicken for my protein

I'm also rewatching Michael Mosleys 21 day body turnaround on CH 4.

HappiDaze · 27/10/2023 18:19

I'm a size 16/18 and 5'5

Frumpyunicorn · 27/10/2023 21:34

Sounds like a great idea @BIWI

Today I had bacon and egg, baked cheese with veggie sticks and a few pistachio nuts, and for tea lasagne and salad (I used a recipe from when I had gestational diabetes which uses halloumi instead of pasta and a low carb cheese sauce). I am finding it OK to pass on things like garlic bread whilst providing them for others.

I'm considering 'rejigging' Bootcamp a bit, and creating three separate, long-running threads.

Thread one - all those doing the first two weeks of strict Bootcamp - so phase 1, if you like. With a weekly weigh-in as we do currently.

Thread two - all those who have moved to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid of that and Bootcamp, so a phase 2, if you like. Again with a weekly weigh-in as we do currently. (Will probably only have one spreadsheet, but with the rows separated so that we have one set of rows for Bootcamp/phase 1 and a separate set of rows for Bootcamp Light/phase 2.

And thread three - a maintenance phase, or a less strict phase, for all those at target or almost there. Not sure what to call it other than phase 3! But one which would include more carby elements, such as pulses/legumes. Will have to think about specific 'rules' for that, as we've never really done that before.

I'd also have a fourth thread, for general chat and in which we can post any specific low carb news or research, and information about specific low products that we've come across.

Any thoughts?

This sounds ideal! I've been off the wagon past week really as had family staying plus general half term chaos (excuses excuses I know 😳) and whilst the scale hasn't yet caught up with my indulgence (was 0.8lb down this week) I feel so much more sluggish and bloated - proof if proof was needed that the low carb WOE suits me better. I'm just shy of half a stone down this boot camp which I'm delighted with - thank you @BIWI - but keen to shift another half stone/stone so think I'll need to get back on boot camp proper.

OldandTired66 · 28/10/2023 11:08

The re-jig sounds good, @BIWI. I would find a continuous thread really helpful as I'll be on bc lite for the foreseeable -I don't stop between bootcamps if I can help it. Very proud of myself as I've just completed a park run after sitting on my backside all day yesterday!
B: boiled egg
L: Chicken soup, lc bread and cheese
D: Roast chicken and yet to be decided veg
Son made vegan chocolate mousse yesterday with cocoa powder, Tofu and dark chocolate (and only a few spoonfuls of sugar, Mum, he says ) so will have to resist that til it's all gone 😬. Weight loss this week is looking promising after a long stay the same lull so hoping not to sabotage myself before Monday.

BIWI · 28/10/2023 12:08

OK. Sounds like it could be a goer Smile

I'll need to consult the Spreadsheet Oracle @FinallyHere to think about how we might make this work.

Spreadsheet monitor reporting for duty. @BIWI I'm very happy to keep a rolling spreadsheet going.

As someone who finds weighing myself I'd always a bit of a challenge, I'd be interested in any way we could log NSV's in addition to the cold hard numbers. I just can't quite see how to do it, what sort be of structure would work.

Any one any suggestions, would be very welcome.

LadyBird1973 · 28/10/2023 16:20

Dh can home from a work trip to Switzerland with chocolate, so things might have slipped a bit. Otoh, I've been ill and not been eating too much generally, so hopefully not done too much damage.
All the chocolate is now out of the house and dinner today is chilli and celeriac chips.

BIWI · 28/10/2023 17:22

re NSVs @FinallyHere we could have a thread dedicated to them?

I can't see how you could accommodate them on the spreadsheet.

Possibly. But I'd be freed from what can seem like the tyranny (slight exaggeration 😁) of starting a new thread each Monday. Or a new prep thread each time a Bootcamp starts. I'd envisage a couple of stickies threads about rules/prep info etc.

That sounds a sound play for going forwards.
It is so good to have company while low carbing on here - but I'd prefer not to put a great burden on you.

I like the sound of your lasagne - is the recipe on here somewhere?

VeryGoodVeryNice · 28/10/2023 18:06

I’m excited for an ongoing thread 😁, great idea. Was starting to get a bit panicky about being released into the wild as a PP put it.

Had a slight fail on the way back from the coast last night when I ate a McDonald’s, but I was so tired I felt like I was having an out of body experience driving back, so it was either that or no dinner. First one since the summer though and I must say I enjoyed it a lot, knowing it was a rare treat. Just been to sainsburys and back on the wagon now though.

RooRooCooChoo · 28/10/2023 18:40

I’m also lining up for my turn with the big pointy stick. My toddler has croup, so last night was brutal. Maybe 3 hours sleep in 20 min increments. I have struggled with carb cravings all day - I think it’s the first time in all of boot camp that I’ve honestly wanted nothing but a bowl of pasta.

Anyway, it turns out I am weak. I’ve just had that bowl and am about to retreat into a dark room to obsessively monitor the baby’s breathing and pray for a better night. Tiredness is my LC cryptonite!

FinallyHere · 28/10/2023 20:06

Thank you, a thread for NSV sounds like a good idea. Not to say they couldn't also be sprinkled through the chat threads.

I'd hope to post something in the NSV thread say every week, in lieu of posting my weight. Thank you

VeryGoodVeryNice · 28/10/2023 20:56

I also ordered 2 loaves of the Seriously low carb bread tonight. At about £6 per loaf with the shipping factored in I have very high expectations! Going to be having a lot of sandwiches/cheese on toast when it arrives.

BIWI · 28/10/2023 20:58

I like the bread @VeryGoodVeryNice - but I don't think it toasts very well.

Also, if you make another order from them, their wraps are really good.

OP posts:
VeryGoodVeryNice · 28/10/2023 21:02

Ah ok. Lots of sandwiches then! Will be nice to have a break from having to cook so much.

Lucienandjean · 29/10/2023 12:34

Good morning all! I've been away abroad for the last month and my eating has been all over the place. The scales were a shock on my return! I'm sure quite a lot of the gain is water weight and will go once I'm back on the WOE properly, but there probably also some actual weight gain in there too.

I'm not going to stress too much. I'm going to go back on strict Bootcamp for the next two weeks, and see this as a reset. I started yesterday, and did a big shop of low carb groceries,

Well done to all those who've lost so much weight this time. That truly is the inspiration I need.

BIWI · 29/10/2023 13:25

Just a heads up - I'm away this evening, staying over at a friend's, so the new chat thread might not be up too early.

Slinking back in after a horrendous week and a bit........managed to get most of the new kitchen sorted (still have half a floor 🤦) and then last weekend found that a friend had attempted to take her life. Was an obvious cry for help as she called 999 herself and she's back home now but between hospital and service station food eating hasn't been good at all. Then a weekend away for our wedding anniversary with a gig thrown in and waaaay too much alcohol has compounded things. Got on the scales this morning to find that I've undone a lot of good work in just a few days and so cross with myself 🤬.

Big shop done today and spent a couple of hours finishing the reorganisation of the kitchen and getting ready for next week. Have a big pan of peppers, spinach, mushrooms and chorizo ready to turn into omelettes, and roast vegetables as well

Dinner tonight is steak with one of the celeriac bakes from m&s, plus more mushrooms. Out for the day with DD tomorrow but am prepared with snacks and 2l into the water already today. Hoping that a few days strict bootcamp will reset and then can get back to good habits.........

Frumpyunicorn · 30/10/2023 07:51

@LiesDoNotBecomeUs I don't have a recipe as I originally got the idea from the gestational diabetes website, but all I did was make a bolognaise meat sauce, a cheese sauce, and then used lightly fried halloumi as a layer (there were some gaps as it is not cheap!). I put some mozzarella on the top too to make it crispy. I would advise making sure your meat sauce is not too thin as the cheese sauce is thinner.

Yesterday we had friends over for a party so I did have a glass of mulled cider, but managed to resist cakes and crisps. I bought a pack of pigs in blankets so i had something nice.

Sorry to hear about the croup Roo- it is a devilish complaint. We had to have the heating on and create steam in our baby’s room at night.

Sleep was limited -to the very end of sanity.

Wishing your baby well soon and better nights ahead.

RooRooCooChoo · 30/10/2023 09:02

Thanks for the sympathy @LiesDoNotBecomeUs. No respite so far, and now the other one has come down with a virus - no croup yet. Fingers crossed! While I mostly feel sorry for myself, I am also sorry for the pitiful little ones Grin. It's rough being a baby!
