Week 7 - Back-to-School Low Carb Bootcamp - the last fortnight!

BIWI · 23/10/2023 08:28

Morning all

So we're very nearly at the end! Only a couple more weeks, but still time to drop a couple of those pesky pounds.

Time to take stock of where you are/what you've achieved - and to ask yourself if you're properly 'Bootcamp compliant'. Remember at the beginning, I talked about it taking 66 days (on average) to create a new habit? Well so far, we've completed 42 days. Hopefully that means that we're all well on the way to feeling that a lower carb diet can be a new habit, a new WOE.

And with that in mind, this week's challenge - should you choose to accept it Wink! - is to find a recipe that you have cooked before, or one that you like but haven't cooked, and adapt it to a lower carb one. Or simply to find a recipe that's new to you, but that is a low carb option.

Here's my choice: Bacon wrapped cod with bacon buttered greens

I like this idea because a) I want to eat more fish and b) as it seems to be impossible to buy cod that isn't skinless and boneless these days, this will work well.

Bacon wrapped Cod with Bacon Buttered Greens (Keto)

A small, but rich portion of bacon wrapped cod with the most delicious bacon buttered greens on the side! Even the kids will love it!

The higher risk of diabetes with high meat and high protein diets has been widely discussed for more than 15 years. Here is an article from the American Diabetes association https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/33/1/43/29676/Dietary-Intake-of-Total-Animal-and-Vegetable# from 2009. Since then again and again and again it comes out .
I see some posters here have meat twice a day, which is not only a risk for diabetes but for cancer as well.
Maybe go easy on the meat.

I think you have to pick your battles.

I am 4 stone overweight (was 5) which has considerable risks to my health in terms of diabetes, cancer and heart, more so than what I'm actually eating.

So if the weight comes off through a high protein diet, and eating a steak stops me from getting through a packet of biscuits, I'm OK with that in the short term.

Thank you for joining MN/name-changing to suddenly jump on this thread with that @youdonotneedanewphone Hmm

I was at beavers this evening and one of the leaders had brought in a ginger loaf just from the oven and made me really crave cake.

I came home and made my first ever mug cake and it was surprisingly really nice.

Adding in my thanks for this boot camp as well. I tried a couple of times and failed to enter my weight on the spreadsheet, but have been following along with the threads and it has definitely helped me to keep going and make some changes to the emotional eating that I wouldn't have managed otherwise.

RooRooCooChoo · 26/10/2023 07:08

I’m so grateful for boot camp @BIWI , but I do constantly marvel at your altruism to run the whole thing. Your efforts are truly appreciated here, and the effects have spread. My Dad, upon seeing my weight loss, has looked up previous boot camp threads and is now doing it on his own, with excellent results!

BIWI · 26/10/2023 11:06

He should come and post here @RooRooCooChoo!

I think he's shy, and doesn't want to intrude on a - presumed - female space. I have also told him about the big stick, so he may also be hiding from that 😁

BIWI · 26/10/2023 11:57

Oh don't worry about either of those things Grin

And for what it's worth, we have had male Bootcampers taking part in previous years, so he would be more than welcome!

<sneaks in, pulls up a comfy chair>

Hello everyone, and @BIWI! Flowers

Have been here before over the years but took a good long break away from MN this year. Back now as there are several threads and groups of lovely people I really, really missed (including yourselves) so I’ve finally decided it was time to come back. I guess you could say ‘never say never’...

Anyway. I’m just going to read along and maybe post here and there if it’s ok? Not officially doing BC though but as always doing my best to stay broadly on the straight and narrow (contradiction in terms I know).

BIWI · 26/10/2023 15:48

Welcome back!

HappyLCHFCamper · 26/10/2023 15:52

Thank you @BIWI Smile

I quite like my shiny new name!

Bootcamp and the related threads really are such a fantastic resource, and very much appreciated!

BIWI · 25/10/2023 10:02

LOL at being released into the wild Grin

I keep the last week's chat thread going, and when that fills up, I start a new, general support thread. So there's always someone around (hopefully) to chat and help and share their experiences.

If you want to keep going, I believe @FinallyHere has added extra columns to the spreadsheet, if you need that as a resort.

I'm not planning on running another one for a while, to be honest. It takes a lot of my time, and it's very disheartening to realise - as I did this morning when browsing the spreadsheet - that there are now only 12 posters taking part - despite over 100 signing up in the first place.

(That's not to say that those 12 people aren't important, obviously!)

From now on, I'll continue to post stuff I find interesting or important in the Low Carb Bootcamp topic, but there won't be any more specific Bootcamps.

13 people BIWI!

I'm a week behind everyone (and have no scales - for various reasons) but have lost:

1 inch around my bust
2 inches around my waist
1 inch around my hips.

I thank you - and my body thanks you more.
Bootcamp is a breath of sense in a world of crazy diets.

(My Dad - has been told by his surgery to go low-fat to lose half a stone as he is 'pre-diabetic'. Since 'low fat' on most things translates as 'high sugar', I can't see that helping with a pre-diabetic-state.)

I will battle on regardless and use what you have taught me.
The companionship on here is always a help too.

Frumpyunicorn · 26/10/2023 19:07

Hi everyone, I am still here too. Have had a horrific week after a bereavement Friday but have stuck to plan. I am a week behind everyone else, have lost 9lb and its not showing in terms of clothing fut yet because I have about another 4 stone to lose but I am headed in the right direction for the first time in years, so thank you @BIWI

BIWI · 26/10/2023 19:40

Sorry for your loss @Frumpyunicorn Flowers

OP posts:
VeryGoodVeryNice · 26/10/2023 22:33

Sorry to hear that @Frumpyunicorn 💐

I am struggling this week, those BP pills really knobbled me. My CFS was already shite but now it’s 100x worse - I have a constant headache from exhaustion and I can only walk a tiny distance without getting really breathless and needing to sit down. I also feel really emotional and tearful all the time which isn’t like me. Feel like I’m falling apart. My bf was going to come over this weekend but I’ve said to him there’s no point as I am not capable of doing anything other than sitting still and sleeping. Haven’t slipped up on the LC front, it’s good I’m a couple of months in and it’s a habit now because I’m on autopilot with what I’m eating. Feel like it’s the only thing that’s going right at the moment.

BIWI · 27/10/2023 09:19

Oh @VeryGoodVeryNice - that sounds awful. Would it not be a good thing for him to come over, to look after you?

OP posts:
VeryGoodVeryNice · 27/10/2023 10:39

@BIWI he’s a 5 hour drive away and I don’t think it would be worth the trip for him…there’s not much he can do really and all I want to do is go back home and get into bed and not
move. He is happy to come down but I’d have to attempt to tidy up a bit and think about food for the weekend etc and honestly that all seems like too much. Hopefully I’ll be feeling a bit better by next weekend.

Withinthewhirlwind · 27/10/2023 10:53

I just wanted to say that I’m still here, I’m just rubbish at getting my laptop out & posting to the spreadsheet. To date I’ve lost 16lbs, so I am very very grateful @BIWI for getting me back onto the low carb wagon. I had no idea you had been running boot camps for so long - I am totally in awe & completely understand you wanting to stop. I will definitely try to keep in touch on the general chat thread.

I’m also feeling for everyone going through a rough time, and so impressed by the support this community provides.

BIWI · 27/10/2023 11:14

I'm considering 'rejigging' Bootcamp a bit, and creating three separate, long-running threads.

Thread one - all those doing the first two weeks of strict Bootcamp - so phase 1, if you like. With a weekly weigh-in as we do currently.

Thread two - all those who have moved to Bootcamp Light, or a hybrid of that and Bootcamp, so a phase 2, if you like. Again with a weekly weigh-in as we do currently. (Will probably only have one spreadsheet, but with the rows separated so that we have one set of rows for Bootcamp/phase 1 and a separate set of rows for Bootcamp Light/phase 2.

And thread three - a maintenance phase, or a less strict phase, for all those at target or almost there. Not sure what to call it other than phase 3! But one which would include more carby elements, such as pulses/legumes. Will have to think about specific 'rules' for that, as we've never really done that before.

I'd also have a fourth thread, for general chat and in which we can post any specific low carb news or research, and information about specific low products that we've come across.

Any thoughts?

OP posts:
LadyBird1973 · 27/10/2023 11:57

I think that sounds fab, but might be a lot of work for you, keeping up with all the threads and different phases.

BIWI · 27/10/2023 12:13

Possibly. But I'd be freed from what can seem like the tyranny (slight exaggeration 😁) of starting a new thread each Monday. Or a new prep thread each time a Bootcamp starts. I'd envisage a couple of stickies threads about rules/prep info etc.

BIWI · 25/10/2023 16:46

Blimey - 40 miles?! How long did that take you @OldandTired66?

Finally! Found the thread again, seem to have inadvertently hidden it. @biwi - Bike ride took about 5 hours with a leisurely coffee break in the middle. I do have an ebike though, so not all hard slog! I cycle twice a week with a bunch of pensioners and it's the best thing, apart from resisting the cake and bacon sandwiches! Today:
B:boiled egg
L: chicken and leek soup
D: Cod loin and roast veg
Snack: rollitos

HappyLCHFCamper · 27/10/2023 13:49

@BIWI that would be perfect for me! And sounds like less herding of cats for you.

Almahart · 27/10/2023 14:03

Sounds brilliant @BIWI!
