Week 5 - Back-to-school Low Carb Bootcamp - our second half!

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet once more

Hopefully by now we should all be well on our way to (or already have reached) the stage where our bodies are burning fat for fuel, rather than carbs. From now on, you can expect to see a loss of around 1-3lbs a week - the rate/amount of loss will depend on how much you have to lose.

That said, what we regularly see on Bootcamp is a pattern of some time without any loss, (at least as far as the scales are concerned), and then a sudden whoosh of 3lbs. So if you're a daily weigher, please don't worry if nothing seems to be shifting for a while!

And don't forget - the scales are probably the least accurate way of measuring your progress. Keep measuring yourself, or trying on those clothes that are just a bit tight, and you'll get a much better (and more tangible) feel for how it's all going.

DS is having a friend round for dinner. He wants me to cook a roast and a crumble.

The roast is fine - I can do plenty of veg and forgo a roast potato.

Puddings are my absolute downfall and making a crumble might be a step too far for me, particularly if there are leftovers.

Should I make a tiny one that's just big enough for the two of them? Get myself some raspberries and double cream to have instead.

I draw the line at making custard.

prettybird · 15/10/2023 09:55

Just make a tiny crumble for two and give yourself raspberries and cream as you suggest.

There are ways of making a low carb sort of crumble with ground and chopped almonds/nuts but you need erythritol and/or inulin and they don't really help you to manage your expectations for sweet things.

@fruitsticksome low carb crumble recipes here

Their 'apple' crumble uses courgettes! I've never tried any of these, but could be worth a look? (You could always make individual crumbles, so that you know that yours is a low carb one?). They do use artificial sweeteners, but I can't see how you could get around that with a dessert.

This apple crisp is the perfect dessert for fall. It's low-carb and gluten-free, and there are no actual apples needed... but you will never know!

I’ve been very quiet this week as I’ve had the week from hell, but I have stayed on the wagon despite that. Very nearly lost all the weight I gained through going away so I’m happy about that, and that’s despite a bit of essential for my sanity wine drinking and probably too much dark chocolate. My CFS is really bad (stress makes it worse) so exercise seems to have fallen by the wayside a bit, though I have been out for little walks with the dog and managed a swim yesterday.

Autumnleaves27 · 15/10/2023 16:58

Hi all. I'm de-lurking to ask for some help. I've been lurking, reading, following every post since week 1 and have completely followed all the bootcamp rules since day 1 .... until this weekend.

For no understandable reason, when the rest of my family had wholemeal rolls with our soup yesterday lunch, I also had one. Then, yesterday afternoon, my MIL visited and brought with her a tub of M&S chocolately mini bites. Again, I ate some of these. I then shared some dairy milk chocolate button's with family while watching Strictly last night. Then today, I have eaten some more bread, a couple of biscuits & some cake.

I'm not sure why I'm writing this. Maybe I'm hoping that by sharing this, I can draw a line under this weekend and move on? I'm so frustrated with myself. It's not like I'd even been missing these things.

LadyBird1973 · 15/10/2023 17:28

It's really hard when people bring things into your house that compromise your diet. I also think it's impossible to resist everything sweet all the time. But even having eaten the chocolate yesterday, you are still doing much better than if eating them was what you were doing every day!
Just accept it as a blip, as sometimes happens in life, and start again now

VeryGoodVeryNice · 15/10/2023 17:30

@Autumnleaves27 don’t beat yourself up about it, you’re not going to have undone 5 weeks hard work in one weekend. Although you might find that the scales temporarily shoot up again like they did for me when I had a few mishaps last weekend, but they’ll soon go down again when you’re back on the wagon. I started this WOE at the end of August and there has been the occasional whoopsie, but I’ve still carried on steadily losing weight. I’m sure I’d have lost MORE weight if I’d stuck to it at all times but I’m still happy with the results so far, by being ‘good’ 98% of the time. There are going to be times when sometimes through situations eg travelling/long days out etc it’s not going to be possible to completely stick to it, but that’s not the end of the world as long as you see it for what it is and not take the view that you’ve fucked it all up so you might as well carry on shoving carbs down your throat 🤣. It’s my friend’s birthday next weekend and I am going to a new Thai restaurant with her and will thoroughly enjoy eating what I want, I’m a human not a saint. Tomorrow’s another day, KOKO.

FinallyHere · 15/10/2023 20:40

@Autumnleaves27

Stuff happens. Remind yourself that it's what you do from now on that matters. As previous posters have pointed out, just draw a line, don't beat yourself up and just climb back in the waggon.

Keeping on keeping on

When such an 'incident' happens to me, I find drinking lots and lots of water seems to work well, in combination with planning really delicious, totally bootcamp compliant meals of which you eat your fill.

You have got this, it's all good.

BIWI · 15/10/2023 20:41

Well done for sharing though, @Autumnleaves27 - I think/suspect we've all been in your shoes.

It's really difficult, but you do need to understand that carbs beget carbs. Once you give in to their siren call, you're doomed!!!

It happens. All of us here are probably guilty of the same thing. Just recognise it, think about what you'd do next time, and then move on. Don't beat yourself up about it.

A NSV for me - about a gazillion years ago, dh bought me a lovely velvet cocktail dress, that has been too small to wear. I tried it in tonight and it fits! I still need some shape wear for the mum tum but I am so pleased. I have a party next weekend and now I don't have to try and hunt down a new dress! Quick trip to M&S for some knickers to suck everything in and I'm done Smile.

Otoh, I've been welded to the sofa for most of the day, while still eating a normal amount of food and some dark chocolate, so not looking forward to weigh in tomorrow. Sundays always bugger up my week!

Carrierbagofseedsandstars · 15/10/2023 21:48

Thank you @BIWI I really appreciate your words and the bunch of flowers!

And @Gnomegnomegnome I'll say that to my self every time I pass that machine!

Gnomegnomegnome · 15/10/2023 21:57

@Autumnleaves27 I get it! I’ve had no appetite all week due to illness but today felt peckish. Dh brought all carbs! I did have a cinnamon swirl and some toast with honey but tbh I’m just relieved to have managed to eat anything! Tomorrow is a new day.

@LadyBird1973 fab news!

Autumnleaves27 · 16/10/2023 07:49

@Gnomegnomegnome @BIWI @FinallyHere @LadyBird1973 @VeryGoodVeryNice Thank you all for your replies. I will indeed keep on keeping on.

No change for me which isn’t really surprising. I’ve had no appetite but also haven’t been to the gym or done any walking.
