Week 5 - Back-to-school Low Carb Bootcamp - our second half!

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet once more

Hopefully by now we should all be well on our way to (or already have reached) the stage where our bodies are burning fat for fuel, rather than carbs. From now on, you can expect to see a loss of around 1-3lbs a week - the rate/amount of loss will depend on how much you have to lose.

That said, what we regularly see on Bootcamp is a pattern of some time without any loss, (at least as far as the scales are concerned), and then a sudden whoosh of 3lbs. So if you're a daily weigher, please don't worry if nothing seems to be shifting for a while!

And don't forget - the scales are probably the least accurate way of measuring your progress. Keep measuring yourself, or trying on those clothes that are just a bit tight, and you'll get a much better (and more tangible) feel for how it's all going.

Hi, sorry to intrude, I saw a recipe on another thread, it was for a savoury muffin i think with egg and almond flour. I recall thinking it was good and bought almond flour for the first time and now can’t find it. I even tried the spreadsheet.

could you biwi or anyone else help if you can recognise what I’m talking about?

ps great boot camp, really impressed with the advice and people’s progress.

Gnomegnomegnome · 09/10/2023 08:47

wow, we’ve made it to week 5 already!
I am on holiday so can’t weigh until tomorrow.

BIWI · 09/10/2023 08:48

Here you go @Janieforever:

Cheese muffins

Makes approximately 9

Ingredients
100g ground almonds
30g very cold butter
3 medium eggs, chilled
1 generous tsp baking powder
90g grated cheese
Oregano or chives, either fresh or dried
Black pepper
Smoked paprika

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 200C. N.B. it’s the shock of cold ingredients going into the hot oven that makes the muffins rise well.
  2. Grease a silicone muffin tray and/or use paper muffin cases in a metal tin.
  3. Mix the almond flour and butter in a processor.
  4. Add the eggs, baking powder, herbs, pepper and paprika then mix.
  5. Mix in the cheese.
  6. Spoon into the muffin tray/cases.
  7. Bake for 14 minutes.
  8. Wait until cooled to remove from paper cases or they’ll come out of a silicone muffin tray straight away.

@biwi, thank you! That’s fantastic, will make them today 😁

OldandTired66 · 09/10/2023 09:48

One pound off. Despite being the same pound I've lost and gained at least 3 times, I'm hopefully saying farewell to it for the last time today! Switching from salad to soup for lunch this week so off to investigate some tasty soup recipes and remind myself which vegetables are low carb. I vaguely remember a delicious cauliflower and coconut soup I made last winter so may start there. Will also make some cheesy muffins to go with my soup and still have some of the flax meal bread in the freezer. Good luck with the weigh-ins everyone, and koko.

fruitstick · 09/10/2023 10:16

1lb down this week.

I'm sure it's more than that really as I was 4lb down earlier in the week. I really am being undone by social events as, even though I'm doing the best I can with what's available, it's hard work. And the booze. This weekend I really didn't want to look rude as our hosts had gone to so much trouble. And it was difficult for me to drink enough water.

But I can't believe I put 3lb fat on in one evening, but its demoralising to work so hard and then see it undone so quickly. I've also had to be firm with DH who, whilst being supportive, does have a tendency to be a little 'go on treat yourself' at the weekends, particularly where it comes to wine.

However, on the plus side, I think I'm definitely on the way to breaking a lot of my destructive habits around snacking and emotional eating.

And I have no social engagements for the next 3 weeks so will crack on.

nappiesandcontracts · 09/10/2023 10:27

Weight has been static the past 2 weeks. Like @fruitstick I struggle with social events and DH encourages me to treat myself at the weekend 🙈 Still, at least it's not a gain so I'll KOKO

Frumpyunicorn · 09/10/2023 10:54

Hi, I have now done 3 weeks and stayed the same this week. My aim this week is to make sure I up my water intake on my non work days, and stay away from snacking.

BIWI · 09/10/2023 10:58

Well, it won't be 3lbs of fat. Basically what you're doing is (re)filling your glycogen stores. Best thing to do is super strict for a couple of days, and do some/some more exercise, to use up that stored energy.

I know it's hard at the weekend/social events. But it's important that you find ways to deal with those of us who try - not really understanding what we're trying to do - to sabotage our best efforts!

LadyBird1973 · 09/10/2023 11:31

I'm three quarters of a pound down, which isn't great but could be worse.

I think I need a stricter week tbh. It's very easy to have a bit too much chocolate or wine at the weekend.

Still, looking at the spreadsheet, I'm 5lb down since the start of this bootcamp, so things are going in the right direction, even if progress is slow.

Good luck to everyone weighing in.

@OldandTired66 if you remember the recipe for your soup, please could you post it on here. I really miss soup and I've been avoiding it because the ones in the supermarket look quite carby.

Sunshine1606 · 09/10/2023 11:55

Yum that muffin recipe sounds delicious. I'm also shocked that we are in week 5 but I've gained just over half a pound this week. I think it's to do with having a few glasses of wine over the weekend.

I'm off on holiday next weekend so going to be super strict this week.

RooRooCooChoo · 09/10/2023 12:56

Place marking. Well done all!

ChimneyPot · 09/10/2023 13:05

I am disappointed to be up 1.25lbs today.

Stuck to strict bootcamp on weekdays but did BC lite at the weekend so had a Seriously LC Hot cross bun, a glass and a half of red wine and a Diet Coke.
I find it hard to believe they caused me to put on over a pound.
I did have a very disrupted weekend collecting and dropping off at the airport at 4am and at midnight. So poor sleep and meals at odd times.
And I also probably had way to much cauliflower cheese and celeriac gratin on Saturday night.
I served drinks and desserts to others every day at least once and didn’t even taste them so it makes the gain even more frustrating.

Hoping it is a temporary blip.

LiesDoNotBecomeUs · 09/10/2023 14:08

Well done on the successes and commiserations on the (very temporary) gains.

I find the roller-coaster of weight-loss hard to manage well - despite knowing that the overall trend is what matters. Therefore I am not weighing.

However, I can tell you that I am sleeping and feeling much better.

I've more energy when walking up hills.

I look forward to checking measurements next week.

(Clothes do feel a better fit.)

venusandmars · 09/10/2023 19:04

I get really annoyed with the 'go on treat yourself' approach. I DO treat myself - I treat myself to cream in my coffee, a big knob of butter on my vegetables, delicious satisfying low carb curries. The 'treat' psychology is particularly challenging with this way of eating, because unlike low calorie diets where you can 'cheat' over the weekend and make up for it the next day, once you refil your glycogen stores your body has to deal with that before it starts burning any more fat. I also find that alcohol results in my decision making being poorer Blush

Today I've eaten coffee with cream and a ham, cheese and cauliflower omelette
D - garlicky chicken with cabbage, green beans and asparagus; 2 strawberries

agnesmartin · 09/10/2023 19:24

Ah, thanks for the link @venusandmars I've covid now so not very with it. Didn't do a great job of sticking to low carb while away as we stayed with friends and DH is generally very good at choosing LC friendly restaurants when we are out near home - but loves loves loves Thai/vietnamese/chinese food so we do have more of that when we're away.

Also though I love sashimi, there is generally very little fat on Japanese menu (it seemed to me) so mental note to top up on some fat before I go out next time.

I'm going to wait until I'm feeling a bit more with it to get back on the LC wagon (meal planning and cooking a bit much for me right now) but I WILL be back. Maybe later this week, maybe wk 6. Well done for everyone for KOKO.

I am another that needs to reframe treats. My biggest treat is sticky cheese and a glass of red wine, I do love this. And need to remember that it is a pleasure not a challenge.

RooRooCooChoo · 10/10/2023 06:50

Absolutely mental day at work yesterday, and It seems my appetite isn't properly back, so didn't have breakfast, couldn't finish my lunch and didn't really fancy dinner. Don't think I've ever had a day like that before!

Expecting to be hungry today though, so am putting plans in place

B: if needed I have a small portion of nuts
L: prawn cocktail and salad
D: chicken thigh tray bake with assorted veggies and feta and/or halloumi

TheOnlyMrsW · 10/10/2023 07:04

Can't weigh for a little while as new kitchen project underway...........most of the cupboards are currently empty and boxes in our bedroom and bathroom (so no access to scales!!!!), we move out tomorrow for a week for the really messy part, and all finished by next weekend 😊. Then will need to pretty much clean the entire house, downstairs is open plan so nothing will be free of the dust and the stairs go off the kitchen so not expecting anywhere to escape 😭. Feel very bloated and grotty - totm is a doozy at the minute, not sleeping brilliantly either so going to just keep trying to stay on track.

Food is reasonably well-planned but have the added complication of being out at gigs Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week to deal with!!! Then next weekend off to Cardiff with DD for uni open day.......the last one before UCAS goes in, it's v busy at the minute! Should probably have delayed the house work but it was either now or February 😯.

I also have an air fryer bought in the last Prime Day sales so could do with some tips, so far it's mainly been used for beige food for DD and DH........

Gnomegnomegnome · 10/10/2023 07:52

One lb down this week which I’m pleased about.

I did have wine while away but ate well and walked a lot.

BIWI · 10/10/2023 08:51

I don't know if any of you have heard about/read about 'weight set-point theory'? It's the key focus of Dr Andrew Jenkinson's book Why We Eat (Too Much).

I'd always wondered if there was such a thing, as I know when I reach a certain weight, it's very difficult to get beyond it (and I'm very much at mine at the moment.)

I don't think it's a proven theory yet, but there is a lot of writing/theory about it, including in this piece:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK592402/#:~:text=The%20set%2Dpoint%20theory%20is,and%20resist%20deviation%20from%20it.

This opening piece starts to explain it:

The set-point theory is related to homeostasis. The theory posits that the human body has a predetermined weight or fat mass set-point range. Various compensatory physiological mechanisms maintain that set point and resist deviation from it. Feedback systems are vital in driving the body weight back toward the set point. In 1953, Kennedy proposed that body fat storage is regulated.[4]

In 1982, nutritional researchers William Bennett and Joel Gurin expanded on Kennedy's concept when they developed the set-point theory.
Notably, the rate at which one regains weight following weight loss is considerably high, with over 80% of individuals eventually regaining the weight they lost.[5]

The set-point theory may explain the high incidence of regained weight. Garvey WT stated, "Obesity protects obesity."[6] When an individual loses weight, the body triggers increased appetite through modulation of satiety hormones, altered food preferences through behavioral changes, and overcompensated reduction in metabolism to drive the body weight back toward the set-point range. On the other hand, weight gain also triggers compensatory mechanisms, but these are weaker than those protecting weight loss. This asymmetry could be due to the evolutionary advantage of storing fat for survival during prolonged caloric restriction periods.[5]

The set-point theory remains a theory since all the molecular mechanisms involved in set-point regulation are unclear, and some researchers may consider this theory to be oversimplistic. The theory also suggests that a person's weight set point is established early in life and remains relatively stable unless altered by specific conditions. However, factors such as childbirth, menopause, aging, obesogenic environment, and diseases can change the set points throughout one's life. Most individuals do not have one, but several, set points throughout their lives.

It's really worth a read of this, even though it is quite a scientific read.

There's no solution posited in the piece - but Dr Jenkinson does suggest that a low carb diet will help, and that taking a low calorie approach does not - this being behind the whole 'yo-yo' effect that many of us see after following a low calorie regime.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK592402/#:~:text=The%20set%2Dpoint%20theory%20is,and%20resist%20deviation%20from%20it.

BIWI · 10/10/2023 09:08

Hopefully you'll enjoy them! I think they're delicious. I ring the changes by adding different herbs/spices. I've also added little bits of crispy bacon and cherry tomatoes before.

OP posts:
Janieforever · 10/10/2023 09:16

Oh my they are fab. I used Mature cheddar and Parmesan, with a few little bits of salami in some . Took mins to make. Also didn’t use a processor just used my hands to crumble the almonds and the butter together.

they taste like cheese scones.

PowerTulle · 10/10/2023 09:43

Place marking with 1.5lb loss during week 4. Happy with that as had been pretty much static for a couple of weeks.

Those muffins look amazing!

Gnomegnomegnome · 10/10/2023 09:49

They look lovely @Janieforever ! I don’t have a muffin tray or cases so might see if I can pick some up!

@BIWI that’s really interesting! I wonder having been someone that was always underweight and returned easily after pregnancy etc to the same weight but then gained 3 stone whether it’s possible to change the set point with medication and other factors (for me it’s been a side effect of medication and cutting out food that was making me ill and that my body rejected). So is my set point my previous (under) weight or my current (healthy) weight. Not that I’m bothered, just interesting!
