Jan '23 Low Carb Bootcamp - the (in)famous week 3 ...

BIWI · 23/01/2023 08:33

Morning all

Normally I'd link to the spreadsheet, but I'm having an issue with it this morning, as I can't scroll down the list of names and keep getting an error message saying my window isn't big enough to display it. Both on Safari and Chrome, which is odd - so I'm putting a call out for @FinallyHere to see if she can resolve it!

Anyway ...

PLEASE READ THIS POST CAREFULLY!

Welcome to week 3. This is the week where you have a choice. If you wish, you can move on to Bootcamp Light, which means that you can now introduce fruit, nuts/seeds, chocolate and alcohol.

SOME.
IN MODERATION.
NOT AT EACH AND EVERY MEAL!

So with fruit, this is mainly berries - when the spreadsheet is sorted, check out the fruit counter on there, which will show you which fruits are best to introduce. Similarly nuts.

With chocolate, make this the highest cocoa content that you can - certainly 70% should be a minimum - and restrict yourself to a couple of square, not a whole bar.

And as to alcohol - it's dry wines and clear spirits, with low calorie mixers or, even better, soda/sparkling water.

Remember we're still on Bootcamp - so be very careful how much of any of these you introduce.

However, week 3 (and 4 and sometimes even 5) is infamous as this is the point where you may see your weight loss slow, stop or even reverse

It's very, very, very common for this to happen, so if it happens to you, don't panic! It's not a stall. It's all about your body settling into this WOE, and what you'll see once we get through the low carb doldrums is your weight loss will continue, albeit at a slower rate of around 1-3lbs a week. (How much you lose will depend on how much you have left to lose).

Bearing this in mind, you may want to stay on strict Bootcamp. There's nothing wrong with this at all - just make sure you are following Bootcamp rules, and that things haven't started to slip. In particular, make sure that you're sticking to rule 4 - i.e. that the majority of your carbs are coming from veg/salad. And don't forget the water!

Some Bootcampers like to do a hybrid, which means strict Bootcamp during the week, relaxing into Bootcamp Light at the weekend. The choice is entirely yours.

Thank you so much everyone. Fresh slate today. Have had a big glass of water and off to muck out the ponies.
Need to just get back on it. I was doing so well. But still, one day is just a day.
Thank you all,I appreciate your help and wise words.

comfortablylesslumpy · 26/01/2023 06:40

@JustAPony one day won't make a difference.
Today is a new (LC) day.
Onwards and thinwards 😀 You can do it x

ditavonteesed · 26/01/2023 07:25

Hey, I'm so sorry after a couple of days at work not looking at the thread I realise I have absolutely no chance of catching up properly. @pinknsparkly congratulations that's fab news.
@JustAPony sorry you had such a bad day, eating wise just get right back on it and chug all the water to wash it away. One of the best things I learnt early on this woe is that I haven't ruined everything by going off piste I can just start again the next day. Think that's what made the biggest difference to my weight loss long term.

nottoooldtochange · 26/01/2023 07:32

I've just seen a post recommending this so thought I'd come along. Place marking really for the next boot camp.

AllTheBlackCoffee · 26/01/2023 07:40

@comfortablylesslumpy I’m doing C25k at the minute. I used to run a lot but last year I injured my knee quite badly and I’ve struggled to get back into it. Every time I tried something would happen - covid, other illness, extreme weather… And because I’ve gone from doing some pretty long distances to zero, I really struggle mentally with not being able to do as much as I used so. So that’s a long winded way of saying, yes, me, am on week 2 and finding it good Grin

@JustAPony absolutely echo what others have said - get back on the horse (pony Grin ). I’ve let one bad day derail me far too many times and all I get from that kind of thinking is fatter!! You can do it Flowers

Yesterday had the potential to be a complete disaster. My FIL is in hospital which is causing a lot of worry, work has been crazy and I just feel generally shitty and rundown. I really couldn’t face cooking much and had no inspiration (hence my question upthread - thanks to those who responded). Feeling like this would usually end with me completely
fucking it up but instead I went for a walk to the local shop to clear my head, bought some pretty LC sausages and we had them with swede mash, mange tout and a metric fucktonne of melted butter. I did have two glasses of wine but I think in the grand scheme of things that’s not too bad overall.

Today will be better. Starting off with a run in a bit when I can haul myself out of bed and am getting my nails done later too as I still have my pre-Christmas ones on and have about half a cm of regrowth!!

Sorry for the epic woe is me post. I hope everyone is doing ok.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/01/2023 08:10

Hi all, any objections to me joining boot camp at this point? I have a bunch of weddings to go to, first is in 5 months, so hoping that will get me on the right path.

prettybird · 26/01/2023 08:51

@nottoooldtochange - you can join in now (or even next week if you want to "prepare" if you want to) Smile. Just read the Rules on the Soreadsheet of Fabulousnss and get stuck in Grin. First 2 weeks are strict and then you can go on to Boot Camp Light if you want to.

@OrderOfTheKookaburra Welcome Flowers See above Wink

FinallyHere · 26/01/2023 09:25

@nottoooldtochange
@OrderOfTheKookaburra

Echo-ing @prettybird's welcome to bootcamp and encouragement to you to start whenever suits you

I'll add your user names to the spreadsheet (link in the first post on every thread) when I get back later today.

plus a handhold for @JustAPony.

What counts is not whether you fall off the waggon but how fast you get yourself back on it. Don't be like me and take literally years to clamber back on board. I feel so much better when low carb-big I can't imagine why it took me so long to get back.

I tend to go quiet (ashamed) when I fall off so applaud you for staying on the thread, drawing a line and getting back to it.

BIWI · 26/01/2023 09:37

You're very welcome @nottoooldtochange - jump in right now! Don't wait for the next one - and also @OrderOfTheKookaburra Flowers

Welcome to @nottoooldtochange and @OrderOfTheKookaburra! Flowers We’re only two and a bit weeks in so no problem jumping in now!

@JustAPony Many of us have been there (on more than one occasion). Draw a line under it, drink lots of water today, and find something nice to do for yourself today that doesn’t involve food/drink but does soothe your spirit and calm your mind. Flowers

@AllTheBlackCoffee Sorry things are rough right now. I always find that time outside really does help! I still miss running (can’t anymore as I developed awful chronic plantar fasciitis and it flares up if ever I try), but we’re lucky to have lovely, hilly walks in our doorstep. I’m envious of the nails you’ll be getting! - I can’t justify having them done this month —spent my fripperies fund on some Emma Bridgewater in the sale— but maybe in Feb! I have a lamp and gel varnishes so I could do my own but I like them to be perfect and since I don’t practise enough my left hand always ends up looking like it was done by a toddler/clown! Grin

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 09:51

Ohh I’m annoyed now - had to C+P as the server was having one of its many moments... Forgot to re-bold the names!

Above to @nottoooldtochange, @OrderOfTheKookaburra, @JustAPony and @AllTheBlackCoffee!

BrendaLee · 26/01/2023 09:57

I'm going to follow the brave ones who have fallen but climbed back up again - disastrous evening yesterday.
I've been feeling ill and totally caved and had a chinese takeaway. Made very poor choices, and then even ate the free crackers!
However, this thread has been fantastic! Instead of giving up (as I usually do), I'm back on Greek yoghurt and water today (and feeling very proud of myself for KOKO)

Thank you to everyone on this thread. You've made me be a bit more forgiving to myself (have given myself a BIG talking to....)

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 10:01

@Pleaseandthankyou Reading back a bit I see you had an awful day yesterday. I hope today is better and you find something beautiful to cheer your soul.

@Andi2020 Happy Birthday!! 💐🎁🍰🥂🎉 Hope you have a really lovely day!

I can’t remember who mentioned skipping coffee with cream in the morning as it sets off a ‘luxurious day’ mindset - I’ve switched and now save creamy coffee (well, instant decaf) for the evening on days where I feel like I need something comforting to round off the day - I don’t have it every day but it’s nice to have the option without it being extra on top of a day’s intake. And although instant decaf isn’t a patch on good coffee, somehow the cream helps it to taste much nicer.

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 10:05

(Those are LOW CARB birthday treats up there, by the way — wouldn’t want any twitching of the big stick*)

*that sounds very wrong. Blush

Right. I need to have a word about cheating

It's only day 4 of our third week - the week when we can, if we wish, relax things A LITTLE!

I know that every now and then, Life comes along, and things get shitty. And it's very, very, very common for us to reach for food or alcohol as a comfort.

But it's really important that we change our mindset about this. Choosing high carb/high sugar foods, or drinking lots of alcohol, might seem comforting in the moment but it won't be comforting the next time you get on the scales.

I understand, and appreciate, that there are always going to be occasions when you simply can't avoid the carbs (alcohol should be easier to resist - especially these days, when so many people don't drink alcohol, and there are lots more low/no-alcohol drinks available), but when that happens, do it mindfully and make the best choices you can.

But falling face first into chocolate or biscuits or a plate of pasta or a pile of toast really isn't going to help!

This is not a forgiving WOE. You can't compensate at one meal for what you ate/drank at another. And, as you may soon discover, once you give into the siren call of the carbs, it gets much harder to get back on the wagon.

So please - next time you find yourself in an emotional maelstrom, ask yourself if eating/drinking off piste is really going to make you feel better.

I know it's hard. Been there, still wearing got the t-shirt. But ultimately, short term 'feel better' is long term 'I hate myself' - which isn't where we want to be at all.

Can I join as well please? I’ve been following the plan since Saturday due to a work trip last week which was a total booze fest with lots of meals out.

I weighed myself on Monday and am 154lbs which puts me in the obese category at only 5ft tall.

Have a serious sweet tooth but have been surprised at the lack of sugar cravings on the plan so far.

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 10:24

Welcome @Iheartmysmart! Flowers

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 10:31

@BrendaLee Draw a line under it. Drink lots of water/fruit teas/warm soothing drinks today. Think of something that brings you joy and find some time to do that today. It was a one-off and you’re not going to repeat it, so don’t dwell on it. I hope you feel better soon! Flowers

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/01/2023 10:31

Thank you! I'm in Australia so will weigh in the morning (Friday) and join in.

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 26/01/2023 10:35

Would anyone like to take a guess how many carbs mulberry infused vodka would have? I was going to make a fresh batch and it should be ready when I'm off my strict 2 weeks so I can have some mulberry vodka and sugar free lemonade as a weekend treat, but want to make sure I stay within the rules.

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 10:38

As long as it’s in moderation vodka is ‘better’ in carb terms than wine/beer. So a little as a weekend treat is fine.

prettybird · 26/01/2023 11:16

@OrderOfTheKookaburra - it depends on whether you put in sugar as well as the cranberries Wink

My plum gin, which I make to use up the glut of Victoria plums, uses a lot of caster sugar in the kilner jar along side the gin and plums.

TangledWebOfDeception · 26/01/2023 11:16

Oh true! I assumed it was a straight infusion.

OldandTired66 · 26/01/2023 11:16

Woke at 7.30, thought just another little snooze before I get up. Next minute, 9:30! And not hungry. Sliver of cheese with my coffee for breakfast. Fridge drawer soup for lunch and pork steak, roasted peppers and brocolli for dinner. Is it possible to search the recipe threads for a particular recipe? I'm using the ipad mumsnet app and doesn't look possible?
