Week 6 - Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp

BIWI · 21/11/2021 22:43

Evening all!

Starting next week's thread now as I"m off to bed shortly.

Here's the SoF

Last week's thread - after the trolling - ended up a little quiet, so I hope people weren't scared off. It's always good advice to ignore the trolls! But also, if you have been lurking, please come out from the shadows and tell us how you're getting on!

This week is the last where we're doing a hybrid (you are, aren't you?), so Bootcamp during the week and Bootcamp Light, if you want, at the weekend.

I realise that as we get nearer to Christmas, and there is more and more stuff in the media about Christmas cooking, that it is more challenging. But hold fast, and you will only benefit!

Good luck to us all Flowers

Thanks for the chicken recipe BIWI, I’ll try that this week.

Up 1 lb, bit annoyed with myself, lost focus at the weekend (potatoes) very busy with family, was sure we would all have covid as kids closest friends have it. We all tested negative yesterday so fingers crossed. Asthmatic family so don’t want to get it! Into week 3 of my light period.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed by thought of Christmas so near and one of the kids has a birthday in December. I like Christmas but hate the present buying malarky. I am going to take myself out for a clear my head walk and then start writing lists and meal plan for this week.

H1Drangea · 22/11/2021 10:19

@Glenthebattleostrich I second what @KeyLimePies says about the mirena coil , had 2 ( one after the other , not at the same time ) and didn’t have a period ever again
My child bearing years are gone now , as an aside the mirena also saves a fortune on sanitary products , so a double winner

HillsBesideTheSea · 22/11/2021 10:36

@Learningtofeminist thank you. I will do that.

I am not seeing much weight loss but am seeing inches. which is nice.

Glenthebattleostrich · 22/11/2021 10:45

@H1Drangea and @KeyLimePies thanks for the recommendation but I cant use hormone based stuff but thanks for the recommendation. I discovered the joy of period pants about 18 months ago and haven't looked back!

KeyLimePies · 22/11/2021 11:13

My neighbour has just come to the door with a dozen Krispy Kreme doughnuts - I sent him away for the first time!

He gets boxes of them from a family member who works for KK and shares them out - I usually love KK day in the neighbourhood Grin, part of the reason I need bootcamp!

BIWI · 22/11/2021 12:19

@ZiggZagg Sorry to hear you've been having a bad time. Anything we can help with?

@FungalLurkins Thank you for de-lurking! But you have to tell us, what is wrong with organic eggs?! That's always what I buy.

@Aderyn21 I know it's hard, but you have to just put to one side what your DH is doing. Sadly, men lose more weight, more quickly, than we do - no idea why but it's hugely irritating!

@mrshoho why are you concerned about the meat issue? Is it an environmental/sustainable thing, or are you worried about health issues? If the former, yes I get you. If the latter - no need to worry, meat is perfect low carb food, and the link between red meat and cancer isn't there, despite what the media would tell you! For some reason, processed meats are always lumped in with red meat in those reports.
(There are some people who follow a carnivore diet, where they only eat meat!).

We're trying to cut down on our meat consumption; ideally we'd eat more fish, but DS1 (back home with us for the moment) doesn't like it, so we're eating much less than we'd prefer. I'm actively planning in two vegetarian meals a week. Next week I'll post a vegetarian recipe.

@Glenthebattleostrich Yes - you've rumbled me! I'm a stooge for the Red Pepper and Celeriac Marketing Board Grin. Sorry you're not feeling great. Hopefully the painkillers have kicked in and are doing their job.

@Jollyholibobs good progress! And you have loads of time before Christmas. Don't panic!!!

@MotherBuckets also great progress! Wave at Leeds for me when you get there. My home town Smile

@Frenchpoodle 9lbs in 4 weeks is great - well done!

Sorry to hear you're not feeling great either @BestIsWest. Hopefully you'll be feeling better soon. Are you at work, or can you sneak away for a cheeky afternoon nap?

@Dellabob123 there are some great recipes in the Idiot Proof Diet book - I might try another one of those this week. I seem to remember that the beef korma one is lovely.

@HillsBesideTheSea yes, the thread can move quickly - especially when there's trolling going on! But glad you stuck with us.

I am not seeing much weight loss but am seeing inches. which is nice

That's not just nice, that's perfect! Losing inches is what we're after - remember that the scales are often much less accurate.

@pinknsparkly it's horrible how quickly it goes back on, isn't it? Hopefully it's just a re-fill of your glycogen stores, and should disappear soon. Keep up with the water and fat, and if you can, do some/more exercise.

@KeyLimePies you know what they say - 'slow and steady wins the race'! And well done for resisting the KK.

The most scandalous posts were deleted @Learningtofeminist! But it was a very strange troll who was doing really well herself (himself?!) who then berated everyone else for not doing as well as they were! And then got - for no apparent reason - very snarky and quite aggressive. So they had to go. (Not that I have the powers to ban anyone from Bootcamp! But MNHQ clearly thought it was time for them to disappear - either they have been banned altogether, or they have name changed, as there haven't been any more posts from them)

Fingers crossed you will remain Covid-free @TrueGrit54. And if all you did to go astray was with potatoes, I wouldn't worry too much. It's not like you buried your head in chocolate biscuits!

I am at work @BIWI but from home and involved in an online conference. My role is just observational today so don’t have to do anything but trying to stay awake as I have to feedback tomorrow. I think I probably need to book some blood tests as I’ve got a history of vit D issues.
That reminds me, I’ve promised to dig out the Idiot proof book to send to a friend who is toying with LCHF but isn’t quite getting it right. I’ve directed her here but haven’t spotted her unless she’s lurking.

BIWI · 22/11/2021 12:38

The other book to direct her to @BestIsWest is Why We Eat (Too Much) by Dr Andrew Jenkinson Very current, and gives all the science behind eating for better health - but in a very readable way.

Science pointing towards low carbing, but also about cutting down inflammation via consuming a better balance of Omega 3 & 6.

Wildheartsease · 22/11/2021 12:41

Looking forward to trying the chicken... when I have a kitchen again.
Progress is clear but the mess just gets bigger. (Hope plaster-dust is low carb.) A few more weeks of muddle to get through.

Wildheartsease · 22/11/2021 12:42

No weighing this week (due to depressed scales) but feeling lighter and noting more space in my clothes.

I sleep better on this woe too.

Rayna37 · 22/11/2021 12:49

Two lbs down (admittedly ones I've lost and regained more than once this bootcamp) so 5.6lbs in total, after a good weekend. Off today in Liverpool for the day! Eye test done and my first glasses ordered Confused weirdly for distance- got a few years until my reading sight starts to go hopefully. Some fab charity and vintage shops done and lunch at Maray on Bold Street which included this extraordinary DISCO CAULIFLOWER! Off to walk it off around the rest of the shops now. Didn't even have wine as my lunch was also breakfast (apart from an emergency Babybel) so it felt wrong Grin

Week 6 - Christmas Low Carb Bootcamp
Jollyholibobs · 22/11/2021 12:57

For those looking for vegetarian ideas here’s a link to one of our family favourites

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/spiced-paneer

@KeyLimePies hope you told the KK neighbour never to darken your door againGrin

@BIWI I’m not panicking about Christmas I’m ignoring it!

KeyLimePies · 22/11/2021 13:21

@Jollyholibobs - it got me thinking though, this is the start of all the sweet treats coming up to holiday season isn't it? I have an away-day on Friday which promises pastries, sandwiches and cakes (to encourage us to attend). There is a leaving do at work with drinks and party food coming up, plus our staff Xmas lunch on the same day, and drinks and yet more party food in the evening (I don't drink so can swerve that temptation at least)

We have a feeder at work (it used to be me but someone else has taken up the baton) so there are already tins of chocolates and biscuits by the kettle (which is by the photocopier, aka my 2nd office)

and all I can think about right now, in true Homer Simpson style, are soft, sweet, sugary donuts...

I'm off for another glass of water!

venusandmars · 22/11/2021 13:41

@FungalLurkins I was trying to explain to my friend's 6 year old why I had bought an organic free-range chicken (she'd asked). I said that some chickens lived a happy life, out in the fresh air with lots of room to run around, and some chickens lived a sad life, always indoors and no space to play with other chickens. "Ah" she said (enlightened by my wisdom) " so you leave the happy chickens to enjoy themselves and only eat the sad ones". Confused Grin

@Jollyholibobs I make a similar recipe but I use halloumi instead of paneer.

@KeyLimePies those work situations sound challenging. I actually find theis woe helps me because it is so clear - Just no - rather than trying to work out calories or points, or trying to stick to 'just one or two'. I often keep a small portion of nuts nearby, or a mini cheese and almond muffin, or some other bc friendly snack. That avoids me getting mouth-envy when I am surrounded by others who are stuffing theirs.

I'm stuck in the middle of one of those days where I have a massive to-do-list and the feeling of overwhelm is leading to procrastination, which of course is not helping very much at all. Will follow the suggestion of another poster and go for a walk to clear my head, and then get on with things.

dh went shopping and returned with chicken kiev for tea Shock. I'll just have to cut all the crumbs off my portion and ignore the fact that the meat most likely didn't come from a happy chicken

Aderyn21 · 22/11/2021 15:27

venus I love the logic of 6 year olds!

ShagMeRiggins · 22/11/2021 15:34

@FungalLurkins

Hello! Sorry, I slipped back into my lurky ways but have been here throughout. I have been enjoying this bootcamp a lot. I needed the reset. I haven't and won't post about the specifics of what I eat as while it is all basically within the rules, I don't focus just on LCHF but give as much thought to making things planet friendly and gut friendly. Which means I tend to eat things that a lot of people would find boring/pointless/just a little bit outside of the rules. Currently going through a mini crisis of conscience as I went back to eating (v good quality local organic) eggs for this bootcamp and have just listened to something on R4 telling me that actually good eggs are worse for the environment than bad eggs. Bah!

It's basically a totally pointless endeavour trying to do the right thing. I don't recommend it.

I apologise because I don’t believe humour was your intention, but I snorted with laughter (yes, an actual, amused snort) at your post.

Not AT you. WITH you. It’s a minefield.

ShagMeRiggins · 22/11/2021 15:46

An inexplicable 2lb loss this week. Yay, me.

Will catch up later—must take a break from (self-employed) work and nap for an hour, not feeling well—but slightly disappointed to see that no one else is mentioning WATER WATER WATER!!

More photos, please (she posted, like a creep). They’re inspiring.

Moanranger · 22/11/2021 15:54

Hi all, thanks everyone for Your helpful contributions.
Posting a modest weight loss of 0.8 lbs but that means I have lost just over half a stone in 3 weeks. I am certain that is a fat loss.
Basically ate one meal yesterday. Today I have been eating various LC leftovers, dinner will be a cheeseburger on salad. I bought scallops at the supermarket for tomorrow -I love them seared.
I bought cards & stamps today, but generally ignoring Xmas. Lights going up around here Shock . With house in a state waiting for carpets, no idea re Christmas. There is a door on backorder ATM

prettybird · 22/11/2021 15:55

Just to keep you happy @ShagMeRiggins Wink I'm currently sipping a big mug of rooibos with no milk . Grin

One of the things I've going post Covid is that even though I've been drinking my allocation of water, (TMI alert Blush) my pee still seems quite dark/concentrated Confused So I'm working extra hard at drinking plenty. Grin

I also tried my JM exercise DVD for the first time today since testing positive on the 4th: took it easy and only did it at c80% effort, but I did it Halo

BestIsWest · 22/11/2021 17:52

I’m trying the swede noodles tonight - going to a bacon, tomato, chili and pecorino sauce. Will report back.

ZiggZagg · 22/11/2021 18:31

Thank you @BIWI but no, it's just my crazy life and extremely poor coping strategies!

Extremely demanding and busy in work, literally no time to pee and only going to get worse in the run up to Christmas!

Hubby in hospital and whining like a lady in labour (did have kidney stones, but it's not a baby is it?) so had to forgo sleep and relaxation to take and pick up from hospital and comfort him.

Children are crazy as ever.

Work have messed my tax up so I'm down about £900 in my Christmas shopping month.

My only joy has been food and I've been in a kind of fuck it mood!

Anyway, back to it today-

Breakfast was creamy coffee
Lunch Nothing
Dinner is egg mayo, cheese and chicken salad- easiest thing to prepare!

Have drank lots of (cough) fluids today but nowhere near as much water as I should and I'm working on that!

mrshoho · 22/11/2021 18:59

Thanks BIWI yes it's the environmental impact of eating meat everyday that guilts me. Managed one meatfree day last week but we are all a meat loving family so it's a work in progress! Thank you @Jollyholibobs for the paneer recipe which sounds v v good.

missfliss · 22/11/2021 20:00

Well done all!! Feeling a lot lighter this week

venusandmars · 22/11/2021 21:05

I made shoogled sprouts tonight, for the first time. Excellent!

FungalLurkins · 22/11/2021 21:25

@BIWI The egg thing is about the free range (/organic) chickens eating more and living longer and laying fewer eggs per day so their overall planet impact is much greater. So as much as it's better from an animal rights/health/taste perspective definitely - it's all a bit less black and white if thinking about the environment.

The thing that makes me really really sad though is that I've recently started to feel too guilty about most fish as I have learned too much about fishing (and particularly the impact on wales/dolphins). Please, do yourself a favour, and if you don't already know a lot about this and enjoy fish - DO NOT GOOGLE/ LOOK INTO THIS. The worst thing for me is that (all but the very most high grade wild caught) salmon is up there with the worst (due to farmed being fed on other fish so super inefficient). Salmon is my very favourite food and now I can't order it in restaurants Sad

Sorry! This is why I don't post more - total fun sponge.

On the plus side though - so far I am yet to find out about any heinous moral crime I am inadvertently funding by buying/eating sprouts. Thank fuck.
