Summer Low Carb mini-Bootcamp preparation thread

Preparation for Bootcamp

Our mini-Bootcamp starts on Monday 2nd August and runs for six weeks. If you are new to eating low carb then I suggest you start with two weeks of strict Bootcamp followed by four weeks of Bootcamp Light. If you are already eating low carb then you either start with two weeks of strict Bootcamp or stick with Bootcamp Light for the whole six weeks.

To get ready for next week I suggest you get rid of any sugary treats you have around the house. Eat them / get your friends and family to eat them / donate them to the food bank, whatever it takes but try and get them out of the house so you won’t be tempted. If you have to keep some sugary foods in the house for family members or housemates then put them out of sight if possible so there’s less temptation. Or if you’re the main food shopper for the house then buy your least favourite foods, for example I will not ever eat a custard cream biscuit no matter how much I’m craving carbs whereas I might not be safe around chocolate digestives!

The other way you can prepare is by meal planning for next week. Plan out your meals and don’t forget to plan for snacks if you’re new to low carbing. There will be more advice in the following posts on this thread and there’s lots of information on the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness.

MsAwesomeDragon could you post the name of the H&B electrolyte things when you've got them please? Thank you!

MsAwesomeDragon · 01/08/2021 12:59

HIGH5 ZERO Electrolyte Hydration Tablets Added Vitamin C - (Berry, 20 Tab Tube) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003AIF4Q4/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_PP3CY3VY7YM6XBKYS2Z6?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21
I think it was these ones BIWI recommended last time I did bootcamp, back in October. They come in a variety of flavours, and I found that drinking a couple of pints of water with a tablet in helped reduce the low carb headache. Plus I quite liked having something to flavour the water sometimes.

StuntNun · 01/08/2021 13:49

I can't tolerate artificial sweeteners so I use an unflavoured electrolyte powder instead.

@StuntNun

Nobloat21 put some oil in the wok first! Then add a protein source and veggies. Put the soy sauce in towards the end.

TheBuriedGiant kidney beans and chickpeas are carby so only suitable for vegetarians in small quantities to get protein. But it would be better to look for the lowest carb options for legumes and I'm not sure which these are.

@StuntNun thanks!

Does everyone follow the strict boot camp for longer than 2 weeks or is the 2 weeks just to get you into it and then you can switch to the light?
If someone eats something restricted during the first two weeks should they then effectively start the 2 weeks again the following day? (I started mindlessly eating a Welsh cake today and only realised half way through Confused )
Hope you follow what I mean

StuntNun · 01/08/2021 19:15

@Kerplunkk some people choose to stay on Bootcamp for longer and some do Bootcamp on week days and Bootcamp Light at the weekend. You don't need to start again if you go "off piste" just get straight back to Bootcamp.

Thank you stuntnun I’ve kept to bootcamp foods for the rest of the day so will carry on as normal tomorrow.

Good luck to everyone starting tomorrow

Is this the chat that will be running through the boot camp, or will there be another one pop up? So far I've only seen this one and the sign up one.

Can I ask for some critique/comment on my meal plan for tomorrow (not too harsh though as it's already all prepared so I can't change it Grin)....

Breakfast: coffee with double cream (is this sufficient? I don't usually eat breakfast)
Lunch: salad made of little gem lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, feta and mayo (just remembered I bought avocado to add to it but forgot to use it...)
Dinner: chicken fajita filling (chicken, peppers, onion, oil, various herbs and spices) topped with cheese and served with either green beans or courgette.
Snacks to take to work: laughing cow blue cheese triangle, hard boiled egg, cheese string.
Drinks: 3 litres of water plus a hi5 electrolyte tablet

Other than the onion, all the ingredients are on the suggested food items list from the first page of this chat so I hope I've not done too badly wrong! The chicken ajita filling is a batch cook from the freezer and I have a few batch cooks to work my way through this week in my quest to empty the freezer. And I've stopped breastfeeding since signing up to this boot camp, so I'll be doing the standard boot camp rather than the light version. Good luck everyone!

venusandmars · 01/08/2021 22:55

@pinknsparkly that looks like a good plan.

Bootcamp usually states that you should eat breakfast, but if you have your cheese or egg as a mid-morning snack, that seems good.

You probably need the avocado to add healthy fats... don't forget it!

I've no idea what a cheese string is, but it sounds very processed. Reduce processed food as much as you can. Why not have a chunk of cheddar instead?

And with your chicken fajitas, why not have courgette AND green beans? I don't think you can ever have too much veg...

venusandmars · 01/08/2021 22:58

Also @pinknsparkly and @ other new posters, there will be a new thread every week.

So I expect that at the end of this thread @StuntNun will post a link to the WEEK ONE thread.

Then at the end of each week there will be a link to the week 2 / 3 / 4.... threads. You can just follow on from the previous one.

The new Summer Low Carb mini-Bootcamp week 1 thread is here.

pinknsparkly · 02/08/2021 07:01

@venusandmars thanks so much! I'll make sure to have the avocado at some point. I only remembered about it after filling my lunchbox to to brim with everything else Grin. I have quite a lot of feta and mayo in the salad though, so hopefully have plenty of fat for the first day at least.

As much as it sounds like it from the name, I don't think cheesestrings are much more processed than normal cheese. Google says that "String cheese is any of several different types of cheese where the manufacturing process aligns the proteins in the cheese, which makes it stringy. When mozzarella is heated to 60 °C and then stretched, the milk proteins line up. It is possible to peel strings or strips from the larger cheese." The ingredients are: Medium Fat Hard Cheese, Acidity Regulators (Citric Acid, Lactic Acid), Paprika, Vitamin D. But I'll eat my way through this pack and see what other options there are in my next food shop. I'm such a child and just enjoy peeling them when I eat them!

And thanks for the link to the new thread.

I don't know how to add my starting weight to the spreadsheet. Can somebody please help?

Nobloat21 · 05/08/2021 07:26

@StuntNun can you please add me to the spreadsheet? I was 190lbs on Monday. It's not letting me edit the sheet.

StuntNun · 05/08/2021 08:46

Done!

Nobloat21 · 05/08/2021 09:09

Thank you so much. I'm not being lazy, it's probably my phone.

StuntNun · 05/08/2021 09:33

A lot of people have the same issue.

itsallabouttheponies · 05/08/2021 09:35

Thank you for this information, it's so helpful

Nobloat21 · 07/08/2021 09:40

@StuntNun

Can you please send me a link to the updated spreadsheet? I don't know of my phone just keeps pulling up the old one, but I can't see my weight on there? Might have to get the laptop up.

StuntNun · 07/08/2021 11:21

It's still the same link as in the first post. I use the Google Sheets app to access it, could you give that a try?
