Low carb breakfasts when you don’t love eggs

Cecily42 · 24/01/2021 11:01

Hello, I am looking for ideas for low carb breakfasts when I don’t love eggs. I can eat some egg but not every day. I also don’t feel like Greek yoghurt fill me up and not keen on processed meat like bacon and sausages. Oh and it has to be quick and portion not too big so no leftover curry /dinner. I like porridge but only with honey and trying to avoid sugar.
Is there anything left for me?

Chaffles! I'm a big fan of chaffles, I batch make them & freeze. They don't taste eggy or cheesy but the combination of egg, cheese & a bit of almond flour is low carb & filling and they are delicious with pâté, nut butter or just butter.

HmmmmmmInteresting · 07/03/2021 20:26

There's not much left so I don't think low carb is for you

blackbettybramblejam · 08/04/2021 09:49

I like chicken satay sticks (sains) and saint agur spread. Low carb.

mermaidsariel · 26/04/2021 07:26

@tinkywinkyshandbag

I make pancakes which are ground almonds and an egg made into a batter, you can add vanilla extract if you like, maybe a splash of coconut milk in the batter if you want. They are lovely and don't taste low carb.
Please could you post the recipe?
Wildheartsease · 26/09/2021 11:54

It might be too late for your April breakfast :) but was it this recipe:

50g ground almonds
40ml almond (or other) milk
1 medium egg
Half teasp baking powder
pinch salt
1 teasp oil or butter
Whisk up together and make into 8 small pancakes (like drop scones)

1 teasp oil or butter for frying

(Add cinnamon or essence of vanilla or almond for sweet version)

ShagMeRiggins · 07/10/2021 22:02

For me it’s almost always leftovers from the evening meal!

Wildheartsease · 09/10/2021 14:11

Leftovers - a great idea @ShagMeRiggins -but those are rare things here.

I live with whippit-thin-active people who eat like keto-cart-horses... and get up earlier than I do for breakfast anyway.

ShagMeRiggins · 11/10/2021 17:34

Excellent point, @Wildheartsease. For many of us it’s like the bastards who eat vegetarian food specifically provided for vegetarians as well as all the omnivore stuff.

Good food is good food. I suppose LCHFers should take pride in that. Wink

To be honest I rarely eat breakfast anyway, so not sure why I’m doling out advice. Grin

think Australian - grilled chops with toms & mushrooms
or a fresh tropical fruit salad (with dash of yogurt) melon, grapes bananas, pineapple oranges apples (cut up & place in large bowl with lid & with fruit juice to stop fruit going brown)
go scandi with cheese & cold meats

mumwon · 11/10/2021 17:55

or mixed nuts & dried fruit

nancybotwinbloom · 11/10/2021 17:59

I have been buying lo dough wraps. They are like wraps but don't really taste of anything.

You could have mushrooms, avocado, bit of Philadelphia spread inside. I quite fancy that tomorrow.

FWBNC · 11/10/2021 18:01

@mumwon

Did you completely & totally miss the fact that it needs to be LOW carb??

Janaih · 11/10/2021 18:03

Coffee with cream. Square of dark chocolate

mumwon · 11/10/2021 22:27

@FWBNC Low carb is usually bread not protein - hence meat & veg are ok as is fresh fruit & yogurt & nut & raisins

mumwon · 11/10/2021 22:30

@FWBNC & yes I know bananas & grapes have a higher level of carb but if you have a mixed fruit salad there will only be a small amount of banana or grapes

Hullbilly · 11/10/2021 22:36

I make waffles with eggs and some milk, oil and coconut or nut flour, just a dessert spoon.

FWBNC · 12/10/2021 08:43
@FWBNC Low carb is usually bread not protein - hence meat & veg are ok as is fresh fruit & yogurt & nut & raisins
No, they're not, some nuts are (almonds) ok, but certainly not all (cashew 19g per 100g) and raisins definitely not - average is 75g carbs per 100g

Nor, as you suggested, pineapple (10g per 100g) & apple.(12g per 209g)

If you're going to suggest yogurt, you need to be specific about which sort! Total Greek yogurt (3/100) many others around 13/100)

You really should not be talking as though you know what you're talking about when you clearly don't.

It's not just a faddy diet where someone might just not lose weight. For some people it could really affect their health.

I am a diet controlled diabetic, if as a newbie I'd listened to advice like yours, I would be on medication instead.

AppleBlueberryPie · 12/10/2021 09:04

I now have porridge with yogurt and fruit on top

Porridge is the highest carb breakfast possible and fruit is pure sugar. Low carb doesn't mean just skipping bread. Though arguably fruit is an acceptable exception to a low carb diet because of the fibre and vitamin content.

During gestational diabetest I went nearly zero carb and these were my breakfasts:

 • Bacon, sliced avocado and portion of wilted spinach
 • Bolognese sauce with avocado
 • Fried sausages with mayo
 • Greek yoghurt, strawberries and a small piece of chopped 80% chocolate
 • Water with lemon juice
 • No milk in tea or coffee (was pregnant so no coffee anyway)

Yeah MN is obviously not the place for true diet advice. In almost every thread about low carb, people come on here recommending porridge for breakfast (??). People literally just need to read labels...on everything you see the carbs per 100g and sugar per 100g.

I also realised that cashews are high in carbs by label reading, pineapples and bananas obviously so (the sweet taste is a giveaway). Dried fruit is literally packed with sugar, you might as well eat gummy bears.

Wildheartsease · 12/10/2021 23:10

Some lovely ideas for breakfasts here... but quite a few that are far far far from boot camp compliant.

Sow your wild oats and sweet fruits... but no eating them after next week! Don't worry - there are healthy alternatives and you won't miss them for long.

KeepItGoingFitness · 29/12/2021 11:51

Can I check if this is ok for breakfast: 4-5 tablespoons of full fat Greek yoghurt and two blackberries and two raspberries ? Can I have any more when I am feeling more hungry?

KeepItGoingFitness · 29/12/2021 19:30

For my evening meal, I have had green bean tomato stew with lamb and full fat greek yoghurt and cheese. Skipped lunch. I'm now very bloated which is strange? I'm mostly doing this diet to beat the bloat.

LoveaStatementNap · 03/01/2022 09:56

You’re better off thinking outside the box. Just because it’s breakfast doesn’t mean it has to be breakfast foods. I IF so ‘breakfast’ for me is around 1pm but even hen it wasn’t, on keto I would eat outside the box. You mention not being a huge fan of eggs but are you okay with them if used to make something else? For example frittata. Endless combinations, can be made in advance and eaten hot or cold. Steak and bacon works well also. Slow cooker something like liver and sausage and bacon or kidneys and have that over a number of days.

dipdye · 31/01/2022 02:22

Hmm, I know this is supposed to be low carb etc, but you could have porridge made with full fat milk. Will fill you up for hours

BIWI · 03/02/2022 23:06

But that isn't low carb @dipdye. So what was the point of posting that on a low carb thread?!

Lucienandjean · 11/02/2022 20:12

My husband, who doesn't like yogurt, usually has a few berries with a big dollop of double cream. Helps him get enough fat in too!
