Morning and hello!!
SO ready for this. I’ve joined on the advice of an actual real life NHS doctor... REALLY!

I have PCOS which for the uninitiated, is a total and complete bastard of a thing. Basically if you have irregular periods, high levels of androgens on a blood test and a scan reveals cysts all over your ovaries, they positively diagnose PCOS. I hit the jackpot with all 3 (yay me
).
PCOS in reality though is much more than that. Excessive hair growth (I can grow a beard faster than my husband), acne, mood swings/ depression, periods that can come every 2 weeks or occasionally go MIA for months... it’s a delight!
The main symptom and the absolute worst thing it does to your body though is the insulin resistance. Women with PCOS tend to be overweight and that’s because we produce more insulin than healthy women, meaning that high carb diets are our kryptonite. No one thinks to mention that though pre-diagnosis, and evening the NHS website points you to their ‘healthy eating’ diet advice page directly from the PCOS treatment page... a diet which recommends 1 third of your diet is starch... literally the worst thing you could eat as a woman with PCOS.
Until last week, I was on and off the high carb diet train for 10 years, even attending an NHS weight loss clinic after my PCOS diagnosis 5 years ago which focused on caloric reduction. In 10 weeks, I lost a MASSIVE 5lbs and was hailed a great success
. I’m 20st, I can poop 5lbs
Anyway, I had enough and although I knew about low carb diets and that other countries literally prescribe them for PCOS, I wanted a doctor to tell me the Internet wasn’t lying.
I went to see a locum GP last week and she confirmed low carb was the way to go, and couldn’t believe no one had recommended it before... then she asked me the immortal question ‘are you on mumsnet?’ and pointed me in the direction of you lot
so, you’re now officially endorsed by the NHS!
I read everything and a ton of past threads, and started on Monday this week... it’s now Wednesday and I’m 3lbs down

Food is great, I’m having:
B: coffee that’s 1/3rd double cream
L: slow cooker pulled laksa pork shoulder (cooked in the slow cooker with spices and LARD
) with stir fry veggies fried in coconut oil (I take this to work in a box and heat it up)
D: first night was lamb koftes, salad, cheese, olives, high fat yog and mint dressing and olive oil on the salad. Last night was slow cooker brisket with cauli, broccoli and sprouts fried in lard
I’m drinking A LOT of water, missing squash a bit.
It’s a completely bonkers diet, but after my GP discussions and 20 years of steadily getting fatter on diets, I’m throwing caution to the wind and going for it
