Week 3 - Low Carb Bootcamp - which way will you go?

Morning all

Here's the spreadsheet

So a few mixed results so far. Hopefully there will be some more good ones on the spreadsheet!

I suspect that what a lot of you are coming to realise is that this isn't a way of eating that can allow you to cheat or even to take your eye off the ball.

In this initial phase, while we're aiming to become fat-adapted, it's really important that you keep your carbs as low as you can (within sensible limits - this is not a a zero carb diet - you should be eating enough veg and salad to get good nutrition, which will mean you're eating carbs)

I know that sometimes it's impossible. I'm in a situation where tonight I'm being cooked for, by people who have no idea I'm low carbing, and who haven't asked if there's anything I can/can't eat - so I'll just have to accept it. But whilst it's within your control, you really do need to stay strong.

Now.

This is the start of the infamous week 3 (and next week, week 4) - and it's very, very, VERY common for weight loss to stop - or sometimes even for people to gain slightly, even if they're following the rules.

So. You can decide to stay on Bootcamp if you want to, to help deal with this, or you could move onto Bootcamp Light, which means you can start to add some fruit, some nuts and seeds and some alcohol back into your diet.

The operative word is 'some'! All in moderation - and not at every meal, every day - because this will mean that you won't see the weight loss you want to.

There are three options:

  • stay on Bootcamp
  • move to Bootcamp Light
  • choose a hybrid - Bootcamp during the week, Bootcamp Light at the weekend

Whatever you choose, I hope that you have a good, positive and successful week. Flowers

I'm with you, MrsK, I never tell people I'm dieting. If you say it out loud people respond to it - despite themselves - by an involuntary mental check for: you're fat / you're a bit pudgy / not that bad / faddy / eating disorder / dysmorphic etc, and I don't want people judging how I feel about myself.

By announcing it, you've just invited even the nicest of people to have an opinion about your weight, and I'd rather not. But I'm not terribly robust to external opinion, so perhaps people with thicker skins would find the scrutiny helpful, I don't know.

BIWI · 02/02/2019 20:50

Not much veg in that menu, @CognitiveDissonance!

What tiny boobs I have are the first things to disappear. It's the only positive about putting on weight, I might go up to a c cup! woooo

Kids have requested swimming and lunch at McDonalds tomorrow. I'm guessing there is fuck all I can eat there!?

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/02/2019 20:55

MrsK they come back though! I was distraught on my first BC when my boobs flattened and emptied, but as the weight went they filled back up again. Normally I'd offer some explanation for that which seems reasonable, but really, baffling. Just baffling.

MrsKoala · 02/02/2019 20:59

I have found people have actually no idea what I look like Athelstane. So telling them i'm on a diet just adds to whatever weird perception they have of me. People not looking at me always describe me as having big boobs - even when I really don't. A lot of people say every time they see me 'blimey you've lost a LOT of weight' when I haven't lost any, because in their minds i'm a 'big girl' - I'm not, i'm tall and broad, but they see the height and width and just make up the rest.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/02/2019 21:17

Brains are good at that. MrsK. There's a theory that you only see a very limited area of what's in front of you, and your brain just extrapolates to fill out the rest. Makes it up.

And I've always had quite hamster cheeks so people always tell me I've lost weight when I haven't seen them for a while. I haven't, it's just my hamster cheeks makes them remember me as fatter than I am, because their brain filled in the rest.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 02/02/2019 21:18

Which I guess tells me that no-one ever looks at my arse . Or my feet.

tootstastic · 02/02/2019 21:24

I'm with you on awkwardness of some people knowing I'm dieting. I don't mind people I know really well knowing, but I hate the feeling of being judged. A lot of that is tied to long-held insecurity about my weight.

The good thing is that people who didn't know I was dieting have really started to comment about my weight loss now, which must mean it's obvious. So, although it embarrasses me when they comment, I know it means I'm genuinely making progress.

A busy week for me, but stayed on track. I'm intrigued about the zozo suit...off to google now!

Siameasy · 02/02/2019 21:24

lol at pet eating Athelstane. My pet is a pathetically small Siamese but at least she would be low carb.
Yeah it’s that eat a horse feeling, gotta be hormones as it was like that with BFing
Added loads of fat to the evening meal to help matters!!

Basically, that chair you can just see out of the corner of your eye isn't really there, your brain is just patching a picture out of memory, experience and expectation.

Welcome to the matrix

Siameasy · 02/02/2019 21:31

Made a beautiful side salad today-rocket with walnuts and shaved Parmesan ❤️
Also been mixing a mini Boursin cube in my fried courgetti/greens
It’s funny how people think our diet is unhealthy-I’m eating more veg than ever

Siameasy · 02/02/2019 21:35

Re diet comments I say that I had/have blood sugar issues and was verging on pre-diabetic hence low carb.

I’m one of those people who looks quite thin in clothes because I’m an apple so, provided I disguise my belly (now fortunately largely gone!) I’ve got thin legs and arms and look thin. So if I say diet people react badly.

CognitiveDissonance · 02/02/2019 21:44

@BIWI a one off as we haven't done shopping yet!

Condamine · 02/02/2019 21:55

I have found if I order cream in coffee when I'm out with "low fat friends", you know the ones I mean (SW/WW) or order high fat meal options they say no wonder you are overweight eating that! You will never lose weight, butter is full of calories...
I never know how to reply and I am just hoping in a few months they will be eating their words!

Notlostjustexploring · 02/02/2019 22:17

Mrs Koala do McDonald's not do salady stuff now? Or there is the old standby of ordering a burger and removing the bun? Or sit on YouTube watching how the burgers are made? Just remember how smug you can feel reporting back that you resisted all temptation. Wishing you luck, though. I do like a burger king myself.

Athelstane thanks for pointing out the bra issue. Makes sense!! I give off a buxom bar wench look at the best of times, definitely don't want to increase my boobs, so was doing a bit of WTF!

It's almost like no good can come from telling people you're dieting.
There was a massive paragraph here detailing all the ways it could be bad, but was also a massive list of insecurities and hang ups, which I then realised might be unhelpful to actually share, when the focus should be on how positive doing this is!

Haworthia · 02/02/2019 23:12

Going for Sunday lunch at my mum and dad’s tomorrow. They know I’m low carbing and were baulking at the things I couldn’t eat.

So you can’t have potatoes?
Or Yorkshire puddings?
Or dessert?
What CAN you have?
Shall we cancel until you’re eating normally again?
You can at least have wine, right?

Then my dad piped up: “are carrots and parsnips OK?”

So it looks like I’ll be having a few carrots and parsnips tomorrow. And wine, of course Grin

chocolateavocado99 · 03/02/2019 01:29

I also don't normally see a difference in my sleeping when I give up alcohol. I thought that was unusual.

Dh made pork belly last night on the bbq. Still don't love it. May try BIWI's tips and give it one more try.

WheelyCote · 03/02/2019 07:01

Sunday dinner today, can't wait.
Celeriac mash with horseradish instead of potatoes, beef and lashings of lovely veg...sprouts,cabbadge, leeks, broccoli, cauliflower

KiteMarked · 03/02/2019 07:31

I fell asleep putting the toddler to bed last night and the leftover chicken dinner didn't get put away. Whyyyyyy must this always be my job??

Mimosa1 · 03/02/2019 08:03

Aaaargh @KiteMarked I too am married to someone who doesn't appreciate good leftovers.

Such an interesting discussion about not wanting to say one's on a diet. Not wanting to invite external scrutiny is exactly it. I think there's a bit of sexism mixed up in there too, or rather internalised misogyny because when I did BC last year at the same time as DH, I felt it was much easier to say that we were both low carbing together - really not sure why but it felt less personal somehow. I'm sure no one actually really cares except my mother. The thing is this woe works for me, so I'm going to carry on. Not feeling that pet eating hunger (lol @AthelstaneTheUnready ) is really, really fantastic and a big change to how I feel ordinarily.

nowlook · 03/02/2019 08:11

Morning all! As expected, no weight loss here this week so far. I'm really glad that we've been warned comprehensively about the week 3/4 stall, otherwise it could be a little demotivating.

Went to the pub last night and was a complete lightweight. Large glass of wine went straight to my head and was in bed for 8pm. Then up at 4am (drinker's dawn Wink) feeling dehydrated. Haven't missed that feeling one bit...but it used to take me a couple of bottles to get to it!

Going to up the water today to see if I can magic a pound away for tomorrow Grin

Siameasy · 03/02/2019 08:13

I think people make it about them so if you say you’re on a diet they then feel bad that they aren’t on one

It’s sad how deep the “low fat” idea goes. People can’t get their head round the fat and also “you need carbs for energy”. Yeah a bit of fruit and veg maybe but bread and sugar at every meal? No.

StuntNun · 03/02/2019 08:27

MrsKoala if your McDonald's has screens the you can customise your burger yourself - otherwise they can do it at the till for you. I usually have two double cheeseburgers without the bun, a shaker side salad and coffee or a bottle of water. The salad dressings are low fat so I sometimes sneak in a little tub of my own salad dressing. You can customise all of the burgers to some extent so I sometimes add extra bacon or mayo (although their mayo is a bit rubbish). Make sure you ask for a knife and fork when you collect your order.

StuntNun · 03/02/2019 08:30

I think this was a Big Tasty without the bun.
