Is just over 30g of carbs a day ok?

I’m quite active and I read if you exercise (weight lifting) then you can afford more carbs.

Wow cheers what a supportive section!

Once you were all new to think and probably would have appreciated the help

Hey I don't know the answer OP but I've been wondering this myself as it's very hard to get carbs much lower than this. I think the keto diets are even less (

TheGrumpySquirrel · 12/07/2018 17:41

Also when I was weight lifting I had 1 oat smoothie in the morning then no carbs rest of day - got to my smallest and fittest ever. Trial and error.

DangerMouse17 · 12/07/2018 17:43

Totally depends how quick you want to lose. If time is of the essence then less 20g max per day to definitely get you in ketosis. If you have a bit more time and need more carb for energy then max 50g is fine. You will still lose weight but will be a slower rate.

FrangipaniBlue · 12/07/2018 17:46

Forget about the carbs in terms of grams and look at your macro percentage split.

I lift weights and my personal trainer has me on a net of 1600 calories, so if I've done 1000 calories of exercise I eat 2600 calories that day.

These calories are then split 50% carbs, 35% protein and 15% fat.

I use my Apple Watch to track calories in and MFP to track calories out.

I got my body fat down from 32% to 25% in 10 weeks and lost 2" off my waist/hips/chest but I only actually lost 2lbs in weight due to the muscle gain Grin

AlwaysAToDoList · 12/07/2018 17:54

How can you have no carbs? Just curious because everything seems to have carbs in it.

prettybird · 12/07/2018 18:22

If you ask on the current Boot Camp thread (we're on Week 9), you might get more advice. That's where the main support is. Smile

But you did only ask at 1 this afternoon and people do have lives and don't necessarily check the topic, rather than the current thread Hmm

TheGrumpySquirrel · 12/07/2018 18:39

You can't really. As you say everything has some carbs in it but you can track it and minimise your intake.

AlwaysAToDoList · 12/07/2018 20:03

I did ask a question on there actually and I was very much ignored

OP posts:
Kleptronic · 12/07/2018 20:19

Yeah I'm on that thread, I get ignored too. Said I need to get serious as I'm getting married in four weeks, nada.

I think it's a busy thread and people skim it for their names, they're in conversation with one another.

Anyway, 30g of carbs per day should be totally fine. Less than 20 is, as said upthread, pretty much needed for ketosis, but that's not necessary for weight loss. Under 50 will work too, but slower.

I agree with the macro thing, there's macro calculators online for it, I use one called ankerl https://keto-calculator.ankerl.com/

qumquat · 12/07/2018 20:35

I agree it's hard to get noticed on the main thread; I've been upset by it myself at times but I think it's just the nature of big group chat threads. But I also think people just check the thread rather than posts on this board so non bootcamp threads on here are very quiet. I have no idea re 30g carbs I'm afraid though! Kleptronic congratulations on your upcoming wedding!

mooncuplanding · 12/07/2018 20:39

Low carbing is really unpopular so traffic is small, don’t take it personally!

I do under 20g as standard but maybe one day a week I go to 30g —-through alcohol—

What are you trying to achieve? Weight loss? Ketosis benefits?

AlwaysAToDoList · 12/07/2018 21:57

I’m trying to achieve weight loss. I have around 2 potentially 3 stone to lose and I’ve lost 4 but hit a brick wall for months.

Lonesurvivor · 12/07/2018 22:45

Alwaystodo, you had four replies including one from BIWI who runs BC, that's pretty good.
Your most complete source of info will be the spreadsheet linked to in every bootcamp thread. It's worth putting the effort into researching it yourself and deciding if you want to low carb or follow bootcamp.
Boot camp is different from lowcarb both both forums aren't hugely busy.

Kleptronic · 13/07/2018 08:44

Thanks qumquat Smile

mooncuplanding · 13/07/2018 18:29

Have you encorporated fasting? It can help get through a stall....although weight loss comes in 'whooshes' with keto. Nothing for weeks, then whooosh 4-8lbs in a day!

BIWI · 23/07/2018 23:02

Wow! Some unnecessary criticism here!

Apologies for not seeing your question - I don't always come to this section as most of my time is spent on the specific Bootcamp chat threads.

However, to answer you now - the amount of carbs you need to eat a day varies enormously, as we all have different levels of carbs that our body can tolerate. 30g per day is quite low, so you should see weight loss at that level - but please make sure that you're getting your carbs from veg and salad more than anywhere else, to make sure that you're getting good nutrition.

And @mooncuplanding, low carb is actually increasing in popularity, so no idea why you would say it's unpopular.

BIWI · 23/07/2018 23:05

@AlwaysAToDoList
@qumquat
@Kleptronic

The Bootcamp threads move very quickly - especially early on - and so questions are often missed.

One thing I always urge people to do is to read the whole thread, rather than just jump on the thread to post their own thing - but that's routinely ignored, as it is generally on Mumsnet. I think it's incredibly rude, but I think I"m fighting a losing battle on that front.

If you ever need an answer and you're not getting it, then ask again! Or you could always send me a PM. I always answer those!

1JOO · 27/07/2018 21:46

Yes I agree the Bootcamp threads are quite intimidating. It’s generally the same few congratulating each other, back slapping, seeking compliments etc and I’ve read before that some posters feel ignored.

Nonetheless there is heaps of collective knowledge if you’ve a mind to read the threads.

BIWI · 28/07/2018 07:33

I never understand that particular criticism - whatever the board or topic. People are there posting and responding to other posters. If you post a lot it stands to reason that you get to 'know' other posters. Just join in!

And of course, on Bootcamp, people are congratulating each other. It's called support and encouragement. Losing weight isn't easy, whatever diet you're on, and having other people there to cheer you on is why all the weight loss threads here are so motivating for so many people.

I can't help it if you feel ignored. No-one sets out to ignore anyone! Just post your question again if that's happened to you.

BIWI · 28/07/2018 07:35

However, an advanced search @1JOO shows that this is your first post. Why on earth would you join just to make this post? Or did you have to change your name to post a criticism? Hmm

1JOO · 28/07/2018 10:48

Jumping to conclusions BIWI ? I am not a passive aggressive or a sneaky person. I don’t name change to make any comments.

I name change a couple of times a year to preserve privacy. My latest name change was made about a week ago.

This is the first thread I’ve posted on since my name change. Although given your suspicious and cynical mind and sceptical emoji I don’t expect you to believe that.

prettybird · 28/07/2018 13:38

Having helped run one of the Boot Camps for a few weeks when BIWI wasn't initially available and there was a clamour for a Boot Camp to start earlier I can vouch for the fact that it is really difficult to keep up with all the posts and questions because the threads are so fast moving, especially in the early weeks. So it is very easy to miss a post - especially as we all have lives outside of MN and Boot Camp. ShockWink

I can also understand why BIWI often requests that people RTFT before posting a question as frequently the question may well have been asked - and answered - many times before.

People get to "know" each other through interaction and that's where the support and encouragement comes from. If you don't interact, then it is difficult to give ongoing support. Confused

Lonesurvivor · 28/07/2018 19:28

I've just completed my first Bootcamp and actually wouldn't have even started without a bit of a hand hold from regular bootcampers on a thread I started asking about low carb and my reservations about that woe.
I've had good support on the threads, yes they move fast and sometimes the threads move so fast questions/observations can get missed but it's clearly never deliberate.

I'm only on this forum a few months and I've already gritted my teeth a few times when people wade in without taking time to do any research themselves but expect others to make the effort to post all the info they want. If people won't give up their own time to help themselves, like the op here, why do they almost expect it off others? I really admire the patience of regular posters like Biwi and prettybird above who give advice over and over with absolutely no personal gain other than helping others.

1JOO. Why would it bother you if people compliment each other or share their success, that's the point of the threads share your journey and support each other. The longer people are on the threads the more they'll be familiar with each other and will have built up connections through chit chat and exchanges. It takes effort and commitment .

To any rational minded person who's interested in BC and put off by this thread please don't be. It's a supportive, helpful forum the only expectation on any of us is that we follow the rules and be accountable for our eating. If you're a mature adult it's a fairly simplistic expectation!

1JOO · 29/07/2018 08:11

Lonesurvivor, Prettybird & BIWI I did not say people congratulating each other bothered me. I said the same few. Meaning some people posting their progress or comments don’t get responded too, but the same few always do. No matter how fast the thread moves.

On previous bc threads I’ve read posters have asked for their posts to be removed due to shame or embarrassment of not being answered or feeling ‘they don’t fit in’. It can be cliquey on there.

I posted in agreement with the op but you’re all laying into me. Why?

I did reiterate that the threads have a heap of knowledge if you have a mind to read the threads.
