Introducing intermittent fasting

This thread is for Bootcampers that are interested in introducing intermittent fasting. There are a myriad of health benefits from fasting and it is particularly useful for anyone who is likely to be insulin resistant (diabetes, prediabetes, PCOS). It can also be useful for reducing overall calorie intake if you are hoping to lose weight more quickly, you are in an extended stall, or are close to your goal weight and weight loss has slowed.

If you're like me and you've never skipped a meal in your life then fasting may sound daunting but it really isn't difficult. It only takes a matter of days to get used to the feeling of hunger rising and then passing again. If you already miss meals or find yourself not feeling hungry at breakfast time then it will be even easier to introduce intermittent fasting, you're just formalising something that is already happening.

You should wait until you are at least two weeks into Bootcamp to start fasting and some people may need to wait for longer. Once you are fully adapted to burning fat your hunger levels rise more slowly and you have access to your fat reserves to get you through a longer fasting period without much hunger.

The method that combines best with low carb is intermittent fasting 16:8 where you have a minimum of three 16-hour fasts per week. This is usually by missing breakfast so if you have finish dinner at 7 p.m. then you don't eat again until at least 11 a.m. the next day. You can also miss dinner and fast from lunch to breakfast instead but most people find that less convenient; it depends on your lifestyle.

The easiest way to introduce fasting is to give it a try. Make a note of what time you finish eating and see when you get hungry the next day. If you're naturally getting hungry after 12 hours then aim for 12.5 or 13 hours for your first fast and build up to 16 hours gradually. It's fine to have a cup of tea or coffee (with milk not cream) during your fast period. At your usual breakfast time you will probably feel hungry. Have a hot drink and/or a big glass of water and usually the hunger will subside and then rise again later in the day. You don't need to fast every day to get the health benefits so if you're particularly hungry one day then just have breakfast and aim to fast the next day instead.

Didn't quite make it this morning. Later eating last night and hungry today. Still did about 14 hours though I think

Veryflummoxed · 24/07/2017 22:10

And I think I made the sixteen hours today.

ilovecherries · 24/07/2017 22:46

16 hours for me again. I'm trying just to make it my default now, while allowing myself to eat on any day I just don't feel like it.

Veryflummoxed · 25/07/2017 06:04

Yes I'd say thats the same for me.

FinallyHere · 25/07/2017 07:49

After years of conditioning that eating breakfast early was somehow virtuous, I'm finding skipping breakfast reasonably easy. More so, for example, than skipping supper. I would need to be busy with something else to skip eating in the evening, in the morning I'm running around and drinking lots of water anyway so hardly notice whether I am eating. Certainly don't miss eating breakfast. Sigh.

ASDismynormality · 25/07/2017 10:34

ilove. I'm trying to do the same, default no breakfast. Yesterday morning however I was really hungry when I woke up so had some eggs. Today I know I can hold on until at least 12.00.

Veryflummoxed · 30/07/2017 09:07

Still here, still doing 16/8 most days. Don't really think about it. Will change next week as away so not missing the cooked breakfast but hoping to still keep to two meals a day. Breakfast and dinner.

NOMOREoatcakesandcheese · 28/09/2017 18:37

Just seen this link I'm into my 2nd week of doing intermittent fasting or 16:8. I've been going about 4 days per week of it and am not finding it difficult and am getting used to it and want to make it a normal feature of my woe

Veryflummoxed · 03/10/2017 10:48

Hi nomore, this thread has fizzled out rather. I think mainly because once started we all found it fairly easy to stick too. Stunt has said she'll start an IF thread after next boot camp.

StuntNun · 03/10/2017 10:52

We can keep posting here although it's probably dropped off everybody's 'Threads I'm On'. I haven't been fasting lately. I want to but I have so much other stress going on and I can't manage it at the moment. I am not a faster by nature!

Sorry about the stress Stunt. Hope things ease up soon.

StuntNun · 04/10/2017 09:45

Thanks Very Smile I'm just very busy at the moment juggling work and four kids with special and/or dietary needs. It's the emotional labour that I find hardest to manage as it leads to a lot of anxiety and guilt over the things I haven't got around to yet.

Thanks Stuntnan and Ilove Sorry I didn’t check on here for anymore posts as I’d realised it was inactive after I’d posted.
Sorry you’re having a hard time Stunt. Life can be a bitch.
. I don’t want to discuss IF on the latest bc thread as it’ll maybe confuse ppl. I’m fine and doing 4/5 days 16:8 a week. I’m really surprised at myself cause I found 5:2 really hard to do or stick to.
KOKO. Good luck

Strokethefurrywall · 11/10/2017 17:48

I've just found this thread after dipping in and out over on the 5:2 thread for a few months.

About 3 weeks ago I increased my intermittent fasting to 18:6 which I do on a daily basis. At the same time I inadvertently went low carb as I don't eat processed foods generally so was just eating lots of veg, fats and some protein and so have been in ketosis most days.

Is anyone doing IF for health benefits other than weight loss?

Veryflummoxed · 11/10/2017 17:55

I did twenty hours today (between 5pm yesterday and 1 Pm today.). Was a bit peckish last night but ignored it and it went away. This morning I expected to be really hungry but didn’t get chance to eat till one and it was fine.

I’m doing both the fasting and Lchf for health as well as weight reasons. Ie. More energy, less aches and pains, better sleep.

Strokethefurrywall · 11/10/2017 18:11

Veryflummoxed have you introduced any bulletbroof coffee into your regime?

I have one most mornings for the added energy boost and find it really helps with mental clarity, not every day but I feel I need it at the moment as I'm recovering from this cold/flu thing.

Really enjoy how I feel when I'm fasting though, and I think I've gotten so used to not eating processed food that I automatically choose fresh vegetable/salad options.

I don't really talk about it much with people though, as I don't want to sound like one of those crossfit/paleo/fasting wankers who go around talking about "eating clean" Grin

Veryflummoxed · 12/10/2017 08:52

Hi Stroke. I did try BP coffee once, over a year ago when I was quite new to bootcamp. While I quite enjoyed it it wasn’t something I took to drinking. Mind you at the time I wasn’t really drinking coffee at all. Now I do drink it more often but black or with cream. I do find that coffee mid morning will help me over a hunger slump and it doesn’t make a difference if it’s black or with cream (obviously with cream would break the fast)

* Really enjoy how I feel when I'm fasting though, and I think I've gotten so used to not eating processed food that I automatically choose fresh vegetable/salad options.* yes yes to this.

I avoid like mad talking to anyone (except dh who does the cooking and is also LCHF) about my way of eating. I find that if I start to I usually end up having to defend it even when the evidence of my healthy choices is before their eyes. That’s why I love the BC threads, we can talk away and discuss and even argue but ultimately everyone’s on the same page.

Velocity · 12/10/2017 19:47

Hi there - I posting in the 16:8 thread and also doing my first boot camp. I was feeling very hungry the fury couple of days but it seems to have normalised now. My question is that in boot camp we are not supposed to feel hungry but on 16:8 I have found that I just ignore the hunger pangs because they are not that important- i.e what I’m actually hungry for is something sweet!! How are you balancing this?
