Low-carb bootcamp

Week 3 - May Low Carb Bootcamp - you've survived the first fortnight!

Hello everyone. Smile I'm starting this week's thread as BIWI's away and Sayra's internet connection is a bit unreliable.

Here is the The Spreadsheet of Fabulousness.

Here is the weight tracker.

So firstly, a massive WELL DONE! for surviving the first fortnight. You now have the option of moving to Bootcamp Light, which means that you can introduce low carb fruits (berries, basically - raspberries, strawberries, red and blackcurrants) and nuts to your diet. Be careful though, as this can add a lot of carbs. Nuts, especially, can be very moreish. Some people stay longer on Bootcamp proper, some do Bootcamp Light at weekends and drink wine. I'm sure BIWI will be along when she gets the chance, to give you all some pointers.

Good luck with the weigh in, everyone, and please remember that weight loss is not a linear thing. Don't be discouraged if you haven't seen as much of a loss as you'd like - just KOKO and The Whoosh Fairy will visit you, whisking away a sudden whoosh of weight. Wink

Now done 6 weeks of bc. Sis and BILwere amazed when i told them about this WOE. Bro was very supportive as he did Atkins a while back. Enjoyed a family barbecue with loads of belly draft, pork ribs, chicken wings and steak. Hoping the g and ts haven't done too much damage.

Can't weigh myself regularly but today I comfortably got into a pair of jeans. 6 weeks ago I couldn't fasten them and my belly was bulging over the top.

Want to stay on BC as long as possible as I feel like I can do this but might have to have a day off for crabbys crumble. Do you have any other recipes you could link?

Couple of questions. When you put coconut oil or butter into hot drinks do you melt it first? And another stupid one I'm afraid, what is KOKO?

Keep on keeping on = KOKO Smile

Celeriac chips are awesome too!

I'm looking for a light batter so many can do fish and chips, if I use a bit of cornflour and Parmesan, I hear that's a good coating... Any suggestions?

If I crack that, I might make some scotch eggs with ds - he loves them

LexLoofah · 26/05/2015 02:17

cobbonn no need to melt oil/butter first

hissy am also intending to make scotch eggs at some point, someone suggested crushed pork scratchings to coat which sounds good

Just had a few strawberries and blackberries, not quite 100g as that is actually a lot now we are used to not eating fruit at all. Blackberries were so sweet I did not enjoy them, DH and I just can't get over how sweet even things like water taste now.

romey hope you feel better tomorrow

Thanks Lex, i have a busy couple of days with work then I am going back to the drawing board a bit with what I am eating. Starting the day with BPchai to see if that helps, otherwise it will be down the laxative route.
Weight STS as yesterday so I am a bit hopeful cracking the IBS/FODMAP issue might help.

I really appreciate everyone's comments yesterday - I was honestly thinking this is not working anymore for me, I maybe should eat some toast, despite all I know and have experienced so far. That is definitely tired thinking.

Have a good day everyoneFlowers

Hangonaminute rooibos (red bush) tea is nice with a teaspoon of coconut oil in it. I don't blend it, just give it a stir before each sip. The coconut oil conditions your lips as you drink it.

Romey are coconut milk and oat milk options for you?

MrsHP my DS4 arrived five weeks early due to undiagnosed complete placenta praevia combined with placental abruption. He's nine weeks now and doing fine with feeding and weight gain. We're battling reflux at the moment and it looks like he has cow's milk protein allergy which is causing problems for my diet.

Kleptronic you often hear that too much protein can be bad for low carbing but I haven't been able to find any information on how much is too much. 30% protein has a big effect on satiety so my personal feeling is to aim for 20% but anywhere from 15-30% is reasonable.

Preminstral I reckon Escape the Diet trap by John Briffa is the one to read but be aware that Bootcamp is slightly different to his recommendations although they are broadly similar. For weight loss the Bootcamp rules are better.

Romey have you read anything on the SCD? Specific carbohydrate diet. My sister has inflammatory bowel disease and (although she can't stick to anything long term) it's helped her.

I was going to suggest coconut romey. Koko is nice, the uht version is lower carb than the fresh.
Flowers for stunt, are you doing ok? Placentas can be compete barstewards (morbidly adherent accreta here) hope mini stunt is dong well, are you baby wearing at all? Only way we could settle my little cmpa/refluxer was in a sling. I know how exhausting it is. More of these Flowers xxx

Sorry I've not been around, bit hectic with trying to get thesis completely finished. I was nearly in tears yesterday when I realised that my table of contents wasn't compete. Got it sorted and now the one supervisor I wanted to check my statistics says he can't do it!

Lex, thank you so much for dealing with the spreadsheet, you Star

Thank youSmile

Coconut milk will be worth a try - I need to give it a go again; last time I was having it for flaxseed mix I was also using almond milk (for some reason failing to realise that this was a nut and causing hives all over my armsHmm so I stopped both. Once I have cleared this flare up, I will give it a go

Oat milk is out, I am afraid, as I am allergic to grains (cross-reactivity with wheat allergy)

Stunt, that is hard going - DS was late not prem, and he never settled - he turned out to be lactose intolerant. I can't remember when I cut dairy from my diet as I had eczema but it was well into his first year. It took me that long to realise the connectionSad. It sounds like you are doing everything you can early on which will be better in the long run. I second the sling suggestion - though honestly, DS used to wail when he was tired, rather than go to sleep, regardless of what you did! Definitely more Flowers for you, it is hard work, and you have had your own health issues on top. You are doing fab

Gcal, I will look up the SCD - I need to get on top of this because the more I think about it, the more it explains on-going stomach issues, and I keep hitting the same (bunged up) wall.

But I will not talk about poo all day, I need to go to workGrin

Morning! I wonder if I might join your BC, please, although I realise I am 2 weeks late. I have LCed before (and been on BCs under different names) but have lost my way a little and am struggling to stick to the straight and narrow. I eat LC most of the time anyway but then I sneak a few other bits in (children's leftovers, odd slice of bread etc) and then get cross as it doesn't work! Very silly of me, I know. I lost 2st 3 years ago by being v v strict with myself on LC and have kept a stone off but am flabbing out again.

I have just drunk a cup of tea so I won't weigh this morning but will do so tomorrow if that's OK. Look forward to chatting to you all.

PS I hate coconut in all its forms. Hope BC is still going to work for me...

stunt congratulations again! My DS was six weeks early last year, don't know if you remember, he also had reflux and it was a complete PITA. He is now 13 months, about to be discharged from under the paediatric team hopefully at today's follow up appt and is completely fine, apart from being a complete menace!!!! I found it hard, hard, hard for a long time with him though - I wasn't ready for him, found it hard that he was in hospital for a while, didn't see him for over 18 hours after he was born, had massive problems with his feeding. Make sure you take time for yourself too, you are always giving yourself and time to others on this thread and I bet to others in real life too. And enjoy those newborn snuggles!!!!

Stunt are you bf? My dc used to puke up during and after feeds, so disheartening to see all that good stuff wasted! I eventually saw a bf counsellor who really helped with my latch. I had assumed that I knew it all would be fine because he was my second but actually after extended bf I'd forgotten how to bf as actual baby. Once my latch was sorted, less air got in, his feeding position was more comfy for him and he puked far less. He still didn't sleep at night tho! ??

Thanks for the BPC alternative suggestions...I normally have black tea (although since doing BC I have hardly drunk any) so will try adding coconut oil to that today.

Hope everyone has a good day Smile

Another day, another viewing, more Latin! And today is going to be a good day.
B - 2 fried eggs, 2 lc chipolatas and a bpc
L - pork belly rib in butter and salad dressed in oily dressing including lambs lettuce avocado and grated courgette
D - leftover courgetti bolognese
Yesterday drank lots of water - even more than on spreadsheet but had been in the garden so felt thirsty.
Decided to take it one day at a time - rather than focus on events coming up. If they are close then can't do much about and if they are far off don't do my usual of putting it off and then having no time to do anything about it. Resisted the urge to weigh myself during the day and didn't this morning. My focus is me and not the scales - when I have got me right the scales will be welcome to comment.
Good luck to everyone today and let's all enjoy our lc choices and laugh in the face of the other rubbish!!!

As I started 2 days late, I'll be posting my weight tomorrow - I don't have high hopes though as I'm not doing too well at sticking religiously to the low carbing. Am avoiding starches at least, and having proper low carb meals but haven't managed to knock the chocolate on the head which is completely shit of me

Still loving courgetti as a pasta alternative; I'd like to try and make some kind of courgette crisp though, has anyone tried this? Does it work or are they just too wet?

thumb I reckon it would work, I have eaten them, but no idea how to make them. I would possible dry between kitchen roll a little then spritz with oil and just try baking in oven... On a low temp for a long time maybe?!? If you find out let us know!!!

(Romey, re milk you could just have none. I don't and in fact no one in this house now drinks milk as my daughters have left so I even stopped the milk man entirely).

I don';t like tea or coffee. Sometimes I have 100% organic cocoa and water and you could put oil in that (that is not by the way hot chocolate). I still think water is the best drink though. In today's Times is an article about just giving sick people in NHS hospitals a lot more water can make a huge difference if they otherwise are feeling very very tired. The tiredness can just be dehydration, they say. It always seems to come back to how we all lived for 500,000 years being what suits us best in terms of food.
