Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Can somebody add my weight to the tracker please? for some reason it's not showing up for me, and I'm not even supposed to be on mn cos I'm going to a bloody bbq which I can't be fucked with, and also my contribution is potato bastard salad which I won't even be eating, and I'm having to use the last of my mayo to do so, and I'm in a foul arse mood and having to tidy up and clean and put away sodding laundry all at the same bloody time because I have slacked all weekend due to repulsive hormones and sore tits. Gaaaah.

I'm currently 237lb (yes, I know, but in my defense it is down and staying that way from last bc) and I'm, like practically a giantess Grin

Aaaah ok, will check in later with more positive shit to shout. Oh, and breakfast this morning was avocado with turkey slices and mayo Confused And am swigging away on me water as per usual.

Lunch plan = bbq. (where I will be 'carbinating')

Dinner = steak and dark green vegetables.

okay, off to finish bastard chores Angry

StuntNun · 05/05/2014 11:50

ImSo ketostix are a bit of a waste of time, if you're drinking enough water they won't show much.

Never finely grated swede is good for thickening stews so it might be worth a try in gravy. I find it splits if you just use the juices so is add a tiny amount of cornflour to stabilise it without thickening it that much.

Lambzig my DH is low carbing with me and has lost a lot of weight. I cook a carb for my kids most meals which makes for a lot of washing up. Confused

trashcanjunkie · 05/05/2014 11:52

oh, I did it! hurrah, I'm in!

Locarblil · 05/05/2014 11:53

Lambzig - I've Low carbed before & cook normally as much as possible, so casserole, roasts, bolognaise without the carbs for me, and Potatoes/rice/pasta for DH & kids.

I don't find I'm tempted when cooking at home, at all really & certainly after the first couple weeks. (chocolate now, that's another matter) But it might help to plan your favourite low carb meals. The recipes for cauliflower mash, cauliflower rice, caourgette pasta are also really yummy & help stop any feelings of deprivation

Lambzig · 05/05/2014 11:54

Thanks, I think I will give DH the option of eating with the little ones or with me. I cook separately for them as my DD is incredibly fussy.

feesh · 05/05/2014 11:57

Hey boot campers,

My twins just woke up, so this won't be as long a post as I intended. But I just wanted to say, after spending this morning prepping tonight's dinner (smoked paprika goulash) THAT I NEVER, EVER, EVER WANT TO CHOP 3 FUCKING ONIONS' WORTH OF SHALLOTS EVER AGAIN. That is all. Thank you.

GuyMartinsSideburns · 05/05/2014 12:07

Ooh yay off we go! Ive got a couple of stone baby-weight to lose (my son is now 8 weeks old) and its been getting me down but onwards and upwards! Dh is currently in town with our older 2 buying dog supplies and being fab hes picked me up some bigger running kit as at the moment Im not comfortable in my usual stuff.

Not sure when I'll start running though, some days I think I could make a start on the couch - 5k thing but then other days I find Im still getting achy ribs (like round the side/back) so walking is probably fine for now. I just don't like my tummy very much at the mo. Anyway

B - scrambled eggs with cream and butter, coffee
Not sure about lunch yet, probably some cold pork with mayo and salad.

linesandlines · 05/05/2014 12:10

I'm just going to set out my excuses stall for this bootcamp early. I've been lc'ing since mid March. Lost 8lbs in the 2 week bootcamp and have stalled or fluctuated since which has made it a bit hard to keep faith but managing to shake the sugar demon for the first time ever is enough to keep me going.
However, this weekend & next week I'm on 2 very social business trips. One's abroad, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to stick to lc. There will inevitably be booze. I'll do my utmost to stay within the rules but staying the same may be the best I can hope for. The trips are hugely exciting professionally & personally but crap timing for bootcamp.

So excited to keep up with everyone else's progress & losses though!

StringBeanJean · 05/05/2014 12:37

Right, have weighed in and we're off! Just had a lovely lunch of crust less quiche, smashed avocado and salad.

Planning to make my gorgeous creamy chicken and leek pie filling, without the pie bit, naturally, yum, looking forward to it!

FelixFelix · 05/05/2014 12:37

Hello all! Haven't weighed in this morning as I've been up all night with DD and DP let me sleep until 11.30 Shock so I'll weigh in tomorrow morning at 8ish. I suspect I'm just over 14 stones, would like to lose a stone by the end of June as I'm going for my first night away post-baby for my friends birthday party and it's the dreaded fancy dress Hmm

Had Greek yoghurt with a dash of cream and cinnamon this morning and it was sooooo delicious, so thank you to the person who suggested it to me on the other thread Grin

StringBeanJean · 05/05/2014 12:38

The no-pie pie bit for supper, obvs Grin

lowcarbforthewin · 05/05/2014 12:45

I'm just going to lie over here in the corner and drool and lick my lips occasionally. Lunch was so tasty. Sprats are lovely. I finished off my meal with a cup of bone broth and it was delicious. My friend made me this batch and I've been reading up on all the many benefits and I feel inspired to make it more regularly. It's a really nice drink, very comforting and the nutritional content is through the roof.

Will be asking my butcher for some bones next time I see him!

fukkigucci · 05/05/2014 12:58

I'm in!
I'm on my phone so would someone possibly mind adding DH and I to the spreadsheet? (We are boot camping together!)
My starting weight is 118.8
And DH - bobthetrucker - 202

Thanks!

FelixFelix · 05/05/2014 13:03

Does anyone have any tips on how to make myself drink more water? I am absolutely terrible for it and hardly drink anything at all except the occasional coffee. It gets to late afternoon and then I realise I should have drank a few litres by now!

ArtiBartfast · 05/05/2014 13:07

ok started
Breakfast of eggs and asparagus that might have upset DW* as she made the boys cheese toasties for lunch (visual torture). So a salad with tuna and olives - have to gauge my amounts better.
*Yes I'm admitting to being a man 'happily' cajoled into this by DW. Blush

ImSoOverIt · 05/05/2014 13:12

Felix - nothing revolutionary, but I carry round a 1 L sports bottle (old mineral water bottle) of water around with me, and I try to have finished at least 1 bottle full at the end of every meal. To me that somehow feels more manageable than to have drunk 6 pints/6 500ml bottles/12 glasses of water.

How about drinking herbal tea? That is essentially water, I always make it in one of those oversized mugs. Or hot water on its own or with lemon is quite nice, and some argue better for your digestion than cold water.

antimatter · 05/05/2014 13:13

FelixFelix - at work is easy - a glass of water evey 1 or 2 hours after setting a reminder on my calendar

you could put reminders on your phone perhaps

do you carry a sports bottle with you in your bag?

all depends on your lifestyle

I must admit I love taste of water so have no problem, but I would need to think hard how I can do it to get to the required 3.5 liters for my weight!!!

I think i will try to drink 2 liters before midday every day - I start work at 5:30 AM, office based
I set of to drive back from work at 2.30 and don't get back before 4 and I know that much water needs some time to go through my kidneys Grin

IWillIfHeWill · 05/05/2014 13:20

oh this is awful. I feel as sick as a dog. today so far, eggs and tomatoes, chicken salad with too much mayonnaise. i'll have to go and buy some fish, I can't eat any more bird today. urgh, urgh, urgh. is the point of this diet to make you vomit yourself thin?

IWillIfHeWill · 05/05/2014 13:21

and no fruit. no fruit. [weeps].

ImSoOverIt · 05/05/2014 13:24

I will, it will pass I promise, then you will feel great. Drink lots of water, rest if you need to.

antimatter · 05/05/2014 13:33

Looks like spreadsheet doesn't add new people like me Sad

However that is not as important at the moment as all I can say is that it is 207 pounds and I am going to stick with it Grin.

I have Festival to go to end of July and that will be just after this bootcamp finishes. I want to be able to wear size 18 clothes by then!

IWillIfHeWill · 05/05/2014 13:37

Thank you, ImSo. I'm on the water.

NeverHadANickname · 05/05/2014 13:39

Thanks StuntNun, I'll give it a go.

If people don't really like water what I sometimes do is put in some cucumber sticks, is that allowed? I normally slice a cucumber so it'll fit into the top of a drinks bottle then freeze it then just use it as and when you need it for a cold refreshing drink.
