Morning campers!

Sorry for the late start. But what with it being the Bank Holiday and everything, I didn't have to set my alarm.

Anyway, you can now sign into the weight tracker

And a quick reminder of the rules:

You aren't allowed to eat:

potatoes
pasta
rice/noodles
bread
sugar
flour

And for the first two weeks you can't eat fruit or drink alcohol

The idea behind Bootcamp is that whilst it should be strict (and therefore, hopefully, work!) that it should also be easy - therefore there is no weighing or counting of anything. Just ten rules that you need to follow.

And here are the rules of Bootcamp (the first two weeks)

1.Eat three, proper meals a day.

You must eat breakfast. It doesn’t have to be a lot, but you must have something. For the rest of the day, if you’re eating enough food and you are in ketosis then you shouldn’t be hungry. But if you are hungry, eat something. (Hard boiled eggs make a great snack)

2.Avoid processed food,

and focus on pure, natural protein as the basis for your meals – meat/fish/eggs. Things like sausages, ham, bacon, pre-prepared burgers etc should be avoided as much as possible. Avoid foods marketed as low carb, e.g. Atkins Daybreak bars.

3.Maximise your fat intake.

Fry in butter, add butter to vegetables, eat salad with a home-made vinaigrette dressing (not made with balsamic vinegar though), add mayonnaise where you can (just check the carb count on your mayo first). Eat fattier cuts of meat – e.g. pork belly, roast chicken with the skin on and/or eat the fat off your lamb chops. Absolutely no low fat/light foods of any kind!

4.Make sure you are eating vegetables and salads with your food

This is where your carbs should come from. But choose only those vegetables that are on the allowed list. You don’t have to weigh/count carbs – this is one of the great joys of this WOE (way of eating), but if you’re new to low carbing it can be helpful to weigh your portions of veg in the early days, just so that you know how many carbs are in the sort of portions that you like to eat

5.Minimal dairy

(Apart from butter, which is unlimited). If you are drinking tea/coffee with milk or cream, try to restrict yourself to max 2 cups per day. You may eat cheese, but only in small amounts.

6.You must drink a minimum of 2 litres of water per day.

"The more weight you have to lose, the more water you should drink. This is from www.low-carbdiet.co.uk/. Water is essential to weight loss for those who eat low-carb. The minimum consumed in a day should be:

Your Weight----Litres
140lbs-----2.5
160lbs-----3.0
180lbs-----3.0
200lbs-----3.5
220lbs-----3.5
240lbs-----4.0
260lbs-----4.5
280lbs-----4.5
300lbs-----5.0
320lbs-----5.5
340lbs-----5.5
360lbs-----6.0
380lbs-----6.5
400lbs-----6.5

High levels of ketones in the blood stream can lead to a reduction in ketone production, therefore being well hydrated could aid in keeping the levels low and ketone production ongoing. Consuming enough water can have many other positive side effects: aids your kidneys with the processing of protein, reduces the retention of water, helps with preventing constipation, and reduces the levels of ketones released by your breath, which in-turn will reduce breath odour.

However, drinking a lot of water can mean that you also need to keep an eye on your electrolyte balance. You need to make sure that you are consuming sufficient sodium and potassium. On a low carb diet we can eat more salt, so make sure that you are cooking with salt and adding salt to food, if you like it. Good, low carb, sources of potassium are spinach (raw), avocado, mushrooms, courgettes and asparagus, as well as salmon and yoghurt.

7. No alcohol

Alcohol is the easiest source of fuel for the body to burn, so it will always use this first before it starts to burn any fat - which is why you need to restrict it, especially in the first two weeks of Bootcamp, when we are encouraging the body to stop using carbs for its source of fuel and turn to fat-burning instead. If you really can't do this - at least try and restrict it to the weekend. Vodka with soda is the best thing to drink. Or Champagne, red wine or dry white wine.

8. No fruit.

Really. Seriously. Honestly. None at all. Zilch. Nada. After Bootcamp you will be able to introduce certain fruits, but at this stage fruit is simply too carby. We are also trying to break the addiction to sweet things, so cutting fruit out is part of this process. If you are getting all your carbs from vegetables and salad, you will be getting all the nutrients and fibre that you need.

9. No nuts/seeds.

In Bootcamp Light these are a great snack, but they can very quickly add a whole load of carbs to your day, so they are best avoided during Bootcamp

10. No sugar or artificial sweeteners.

Sugar is an obvious ‘no no’, but artificial sweeteners are also an issue. One of the aims of this way of eating is to eat pure and natural foods, so including sweeteners is not recommended. Some people find that artificial sweeteners can impede their weight loss, and there is some suggestion that your body can respond to sweeteners as if they were sugar, by releasing more insulin - and therefore laying down fat.

Given that the aim of Bootcamp is to help us lose our sweet tooth and addiction to sweet things, then it is a good idea to avoid sweeteners altogether in this first two weeks.

You might find it useful to print these rules out and stick them on the fridge, or somewhere handy.

And, although I'm not sure what's happening about the spreadsheet this time, have a look at the Spreadsheet of Fabulousness at the tabs on the bottom, there is loads of useful information

Morning everyone Grin

I've just had what sounds like a very extravagant breakfast, smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with a mug of coffee with double cream. I love this WOE Grin

L: Left over beef olive and broccoli
D: Either pork belly slices with stir fry vegetables or mushroom stroganoff with cauli rice
S: (if I feel I need something) babybels or veg sticks

trashy last BC when you made your fake hot chocolate did you actually like it? I tried it and it was the most disgusting thing I'd ever tried!! What a waste of cream.

teawithlemon is the cheesy leek recipe on the recipe thread? It sounds like the type of thing I'd like...ETS its not leek its celery, definitely not the type of thing I'd like!! Grin

lowcarbforthewin orange blossom water if very nice in yogurt, I've also used rose water before

Iwill and never I don't think it is normal to be sick, I hope you are feeling better soon. It is normal for your bowel habits to change I think. Some people experience constipation but eating more fat and drinking more water (yes more water) can help with that. Some people also end up going less often. TMI coming up, I used to go once per day now I go once every 2nd day, I think your body uses more of the food you eat on this WOE so there is less waste IYSWIM.

hello crabby the orgasmic duck is so flavoursome, it is not possible to replicate by marinating for a few hours in garlic and pepper, peony I think we'd need to marinate it for a couple of days to get the flavour into the meat. I've got one pack left in the freezer, I don't know if I want to eat it or keep it forever.

How are the fishes crabby? I will post a picture of my babies soon, they are growing quickly Smile

Folk great news on the measurements its nice when you see them go down isn't it?

Have a good day LCing everyone Grin

Had a good day yesterday - until ds came downstairs with his last slab of Peppermint Crisp (a fabulous chocolate from South Africa with long shards of peppermint covered by chocolate) and offered me two squares which I was powerless to refuse Shock. Oops Blush

I did go and have a lot of water afterwards Grin

Today I've started with Lidl yogurt and a splash of cream plus a pinch of cinnamon. Lunch will probably be pastrami and coleslaw and then supper (at 9 'cos of ds' rugby training) will be turnip, cabbage, celeriac and a little carrot soup (made with a rich game/duck stock) Smile

petalsandstars · 07/05/2014 08:42

Does anyone have any tips for managing the tiredness brought on by broken sleep and an energetic toddler? My usual go to is chocolate Sad

Managed my coffee yesterday without sugar or sweetener but did use ff milk

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 09:36

Petals - coffee is always good for me. Try really creamy jersey milk and work your way up to cream, bulletproof coffee is also a lot nicer than it sounds (google for instructions) and helped me through a horrible morning yesterday.

Hope you start to feel perkier soon! Smile

Locarblil · 07/05/2014 09:40

Feeling great this morning, after a miserable yesterday. 3lbs down (I know it may fluctuate but feels good anyway Smile)

B - eggs in a cup
L - Am working later so will be a M&S greek salad or they do a little pot of mozzarella & sundried tomatoes which is delish and definitely under 4g carbs per 100g which is my ballpark for what I can eat.

D - leftover roast chicken, poss in a cheese sauce with some bacon, green beans & brocolli.

Petals - everything I've read suggests you will get much less tired v soon as your blood sugar stops spiking & falling dramatically, so just keep slogging on till that happens?

petalsandstars · 07/05/2014 09:40

Thanks ImSo, hopefully the energy benefits will kick in soon too. Butter with eggs was lovely this morning.

ImSoOverIt · 07/05/2014 09:44

Morning all

I've do e what many if you recommend and had leftovers for brekkie, I was really hungry this morning and the thought of egg in a cup just wasn't cutting it, so I had leftover very cheesy fritata from last night with some fried mushrooms and it really hit the spot!

B - fritata and coffee with cream (not bpc today as I have a massive pot of short dated cream that I bought marked down that I need to use up)

L - will be out with a friend so will probably be an omelette or a salad

D - have some Quorn pieces and Quorn mince in the freezer so will have to think of something to do with one of those. Any suggestions? I was thinking maybe stir fry, or I did make a korma once with Quorn that dp actually quite liked, but it may have had ground almonds in so perhaps better for bcl...

On the subject of cream, does it freeze well? There is often lots marked down at sainsburys so was wondering if I could whack a couple of pots in the freezer....

lowcarbforthewin · 07/05/2014 09:50

I freeze portions of cream in ice cube trays. Freezes nicely!

Petals a cup of stock is nourishing. I think little snacks of cheese or a boiled egg is good. Planning is everything, it must be hard doing this with a young child.

I have been doing a lot of ogling of myself naked. Wink I have had horrendous cellulite on my legs for years (bearing in mind I was many stones heavier than this and used to have mega sugar binges). As I've lost weight this really hasn't improved and that's been really hard to deal with. My ultimate goal is to have skin removal surgery on my lower body because I think that will improve how they look generally (and at my final goal I will have lost 7-8 stones). Anyway, blah blah blah, the point is I think in the last few weeks they have IMPROVED. Much less cellulite. They're starting to look like normal legs. My cankles are pretty much gone, I have shapely ankles! I am over the moon. I'm not going to be able to get anything done at this rate, I'm being so vain staring at them for hours each day. Am rubbing copious amounts of coconut oil into them too

Looking forward to many more improvements in them over the next 10 weeks. And am eyeing up nice dresses in the shops which I can buy in a few months. Grin

gillyginger · 07/05/2014 10:02

Morning Smile
Hope you all having a lovely day
Just had a two egg omelette cooked in coconut oil and black coffee for breakfast, along with litre of water.
Just of to work, luckily I work in deli style restaurant so I have a choice of salads for lunch.
Will post rest of food later and want to have a good read of the question thread.

zoodle · 07/05/2014 10:12

Hi all! Not posted before but i'm coming out of hiding.

I went Primal about two years ago (like BCL i think-never went into ketosis) and loved it. But then i had a baby and it all went wrong. Been carby snacking and getting low blood sugar attacks.

I'm using this to get back on the wagon! All the support is great. Loving all the meal and snack ideas too.

Smoked mackerel for lunch yesterday- is that ok?

Feeling pretty crappy this morning. Need more water i think.

pregnantpause · 07/05/2014 10:42

Morning all. I am coming down with a coldHmm and my first response to sickness is usually toast. Not anymore.
I'm planning my meals for the next few weeks and looking through my cookbooks is very enthusing- most have at least 30% lc recipes- and they are generally recipes I've not tried due to the fat content! Bring on the terrine!

Today plan

Breakfast- leftover lc chilli and salad

Lunch- asparagus with poached eggs and hollandaise

Dinner- cauliflower cheese and a bacon wrapped chicken breast

I'm having at least two coffee creams and might have a snack of some radish dipped in garlic mayo this evening ( when dh has his evening pack of monster munch)

I am wondering after yesterday, how many eggs is too many eggs?

notamonkeysuncle · 07/05/2014 10:44

Morning BC'ers
B- just coffee today, everyone over slept!
L- mushrooms in garlic cream with bacon
D- is a bit of question mark at the moment, probably something with leeks and broccoli

NigellasGuest · 07/05/2014 10:58

hello all - scrambled eggs for breakfast and creamy coffee.

I'm planning to try creamed coconut in my Total later as recommended earlier so will try and find it in the shop - or was it cream of coconut?

lowcarbforthewin · 07/05/2014 11:01

Coconut cream, not creamed coconut.

I don't think you can eat too many eggs. I eat 2 or 3 a day.

FolknNorah · 07/05/2014 11:04

petal you sound like me I have an active nightmare toddler who doesn't sleep and I'm also still bf him at bedtime. I'm soooo tired all the time. This is what causes me to be a carby twat Sad
But I'm determined, as I do feel better in myself when I'm on this WOe.

magso · 07/05/2014 11:04

Well I went shopping to stock the fridge with suitable veg. Not sure if tomatoes are allowed? Made a fish pie (no mash one for me) Corgette topping did not quite work but it was acceptable.
I take a supplement that is a type of sugar (d-ribose) but as it doesn't cause an insulin surge I think I can continue, at least on a modified form of low carbing.

Doshusallie · 07/05/2014 11:06

Awfully Posh pork scratchings are £7.68 for a box of 12 on Amazon, nothing in them but pork rind and Anglesey salt.

NigellasGuest · 07/05/2014 11:08

thanks lowcarbforthe win I will analyse the carb content before buying to make sure! magso as far as I recall from doing this WOE in the past, tomatoes are too carby at least for Bootcamp Wink

GermanGirlinLondon · 07/05/2014 11:10

I am already failing. Confused

GuyMartinsSideburns · 07/05/2014 11:37

Breakfast - just a coffee this morning as had to leave the house at 8 to take baby ds to his first lot of jabs at 9am. The walk into town was nice and I also walked home - its all uphill so I thought thatd do me some good Grin Was hard work pushing my bruiser in his buggy but I feel better for it.

Lunch - (more late breakfast/early lunch) Ive just had some of the leftover cottage pie from last night with butter.

Dinner - not sure yet, have got some bf sausages in the fridge or poss steak, Im just weird with cooking meat (any tips?? I reckon if I can cook a steak well then thatd be super handy) If I cook the sausages Id love cauli cheese with it but Im not sure if I'll have a chance to make that today, obv after the jabs ds wants his mummy.

glenthebattleostrich · 07/05/2014 11:38

Had a good start to the day then started making DD's birthday cake and ate loads of the mixture before it went in the oven.

But that is behind me now. I will get back on track now.

B - Tea with almond milk, Ham and Philli roll ups
L - fried hallomi cheese with salad
D - bolognese served on a portabelo mushroom with cheese.

No more snacks, no more eating cake mix from the bowl Blush

LittleMissDisorganized · 07/05/2014 12:02

pregnantpause that's a really interesting thought that there are all those unused recipes - I bought a couple of (IMO) good low carb cookbooks because I needed some inspiration, stupidly didn't think that the inspiration was already on the shelves... thank you!

lowcarbforthewin you have some great ideas! and so much success already, wow!! I too have thought that I may see a plastic surgeon if I do get the 5 stone+ off in the end. You are very entertaining to read (I think the same of trashcan, and it's one of the great things about this thread for me, to feel in community and inspired)

IWill double vision is a bit concerning. Was it after the bathroom, ahem, episodes, or has it continued?? I don't think that's usual for carb flu.... a bit blurry perhaps but not double.

ImSo my ultimate mince recipe is on the recipe thread, taco bake - should work with quorn and my DH will eat it with no carbs added.

monkeyface it's not a huge surprise you've got carb flu, is it?! I hope it's quick though.

Sayra the hot chocolate was revolting IMO also - but some G+B cocoa in yogurt is quite nice - in a kind of very dark, but different, way.

But tbh best to stick to StuntNun's suggestions and crack on through it, because if you yo-yo in and out it feels more awful for longer, from watching others do that.

What a fast moving thread!!! Keep going all, you are doing really well, this time next week those sicky Envy faces will be much happier Grin

Oh, food here today will be:

B: yogurt/cream/cinnamon/vanilla
L:rocket with halloumi and some leftover bbq pork (this one is low carb - Sainsbury's - many aren't, and are very sticky and sweet)
D: steak in creamy peppercorn sauce, purple sprouting broccoli, mashed swede.

And my own note - I am back at clinic with my much operated legs this afternoon (hard to go without them as DH would say at that point ) and hopefully no more surgery is going to be planned. I need a rest and I need to work. Which means I will probably have to tough out my big toenail being pulled out in clinic. Lovely. Better than another GA though. 'See' you all later!

PseudoBadger · 07/05/2014 12:08

What's wrong GermanGirl?
